Prague is one of Europe's most beautiful capitals and, despite the crowds, remains great value for students. Charles University, the oldest in Central Europe, plus half a dozen other institutions fill the city with young people, and the international community is huge. Add superb public transport, cheap beer and a central location for weekend travel, and it is an easy place to love.

  • Charles University, founded in 1348, is the oldest in Central Europe
  • One of the biggest Erasmus destinations in Europe, so the international scene is instant
  • Dresden, Vienna and Berlin are all reachable for a weekend

The scene sprawls from Zizkov, said to have the most pubs per square metre in Europe, to the riverside Naplavka in summer and the clubs of Holesovice and the legendary five-floor Karlovy Lazne. ESN chapters at each university run pub crawls, trips and buddy programmes, and the sheer number of exchange students means you are never short of plans.

  • Pub-crawl Zizkov, then move to riverside drinks at Naplavka in warmer months
  • Follow ESN Prague (VSE, CUNI, CVUT) for trips and welcome events
  • Catch cheap live music and clubs around Holesovice and Cross Club

As the priciest Czech city, Prague still undercuts Western Europe: plan on roughly 700 to 1,000 euros a month, with rent the main driver. Beer famously costs less than water, often 1.50 euros a half-litre, and menza lunches stay cheap. Living outside the very centre and cooking at home keeps you comfortably in budget.

  • A student Litacka transport pass is about 1,280 Kc (around 52 euros) for three months
  • A pint of Pilsner or Kozel runs 40 to 60 Kc (1.60 to 2.40 euros) outside tourist zones
  • Cook using the Vietnamese-run vecerka shops and the Sapa market for cheap groceries

Charles University and CVUT run big dorm complexes, from Strahov (the largest, near the CVUT campus) to Kajetanka and Hostivar, which are cheap but basic. Private shared flats are pricier and go fast, with Vinohrady, Zizkov and Holesovice the sweet spots. Start searching weeks ahead and beware deposit scams.

  • Apply for a Strahov or Hostivar dorm through your university's accommodation office
  • Search flats on Sreality, Bezrealitky and the Flatshare Prague Facebook group
  • Ask the Studcasa Prague group to vet a listing before you pay any deposit

Prague's transport is excellent: three metro lines (A green, B yellow, C red), a dense tram network with night trams numbered 91 to 99, and buses to the edges. Everything runs on one ticket, loaded onto a Litacka card or bought in the PID Litacka app. The centre is also very walkable.

  • Buy a 90-minute, monthly or student-rate long-term pass in the PID Litacka app
  • Night trams (91 to 99) and night buses run all night from Lazarska
  • The funicular to Petrin and the metro are all covered by the same ticket

Charles University spans law, medicine, arts and sciences across the city, while CVUT (engineering) and VSE (economics) run the largest English-taught exchange catalogues. FAMU is a world-renowned film school, and Anglo-American University teaches fully in English. The international offices are well drilled for Erasmus.

  • VSE (University of Economics) and CVUT offer the broadest English-taught courses
  • FAMU is a top pick if you are into film and photography

It depends entirely on your passport. EU, EEA and Swiss citizens need no visa at all; if you are staying a while you simply register your address with the Foreign Police within 30 days of arriving, and your university or landlord usually walks you through it. No permit, no drama.

Everyone else on an exchange longer than 90 days needs a long-term study visa, applied for at a Czech embassy before you travel. Expect to show your acceptance letter, proof of accommodation, proof of funds (around 3,000 euros in the bank), travel health insurance, and to give biometrics. Processing can run up to 60 days, so start the paperwork the moment you are accepted.

  • EU/EEA/Swiss, no visa; register with the Foreign Police within 30 days
  • Non-EU, over 90 days, long-term study visa from a Czech embassy
  • Bring, acceptance letter, accommodation proof, funds, health insurance
  • Timeline, apply early; processing can take up to 60 days

Czech classics rule, from svickova and gulas to roast pork with bread dumplings, but Prague's best-value secret is its Vietnamese food, thanks to a large community and the Sapa market. Skip the touristy trdelnik and instead try chlebicky (open sandwiches) and proper pub food. Farmers markets pop up along the river.

  • Hit the Saturday Naplavka farmers market by the river
  • Eat cheap, excellent pho and bun at the Sapa market in Libus
  • Try svickova and a Pilsner in a proper hospoda, away from Old Town Square

Vinohrady is the leafy, cafe-filled favourite for students and expats, while Zizkov next door is scruffier, cheaper and pub-heavy. Holesovice mixes galleries and warehouse clubs, Karlin is the polished up-and-comer, and Dejvice holds the CVUT campus. The historic Mala Strana and Old Town are gorgeous but touristy and pricey.

  • Vinohrady: cafes, parks and a sociable but liveable, central feel
  • Zizkov: the cheapest fun, with wall-to-wall pubs
  • Holesovice and Karlin: arts, clubs and the trendiest new spots

Prague is a hub for cheap weekends. Kutna Hora and its bone church are an hour by train, the fairy-tale town of Cesky Krumlov about three, and Karlstejn castle 40 minutes. Cross-border, Dresden is a stunning two-hour trip and Vienna or Berlin around four, all on cheap RegioJet and FlixBus routes.

  • Kutna Hora (the bone ossuary): about 1 hour by train
  • Dresden in Germany: a scenic 2 hours up the Elbe by train
  • Cesky Krumlov or Bohemian Switzerland national park for a proper weekend

Avoid the Old Town Square restaurants and the exchange booths with 0% commission signs, which both fleece tourists. Always validate paper transport tickets, never get into an unmarked taxi (use Bolt or Uber), and carry your student card for menza and museum discounts. Tap water is safe and free.

  • Never change money at street exchange booths, and use an ATM or Revolut instead
  • Use Bolt rather than hailing taxis to avoid overcharging
  • Ask the Studcasa Prague group for current no-tourist-trap restaurant picks

Which classes do you recommend… or not?

I loved my foundation class in entrepreneurship, but I don't recommend corporate finance.

The campus has some areas that are a bit old and others that are modern. On the first floor of the SB building, there's a great place to work, and there are lots of spots around the university.

💡 Other Tips

Never forget to have your transport pass, because the inspectors don't joke around and easily issue fines.

Where was it located?

15min walking from the National Museum in Wenceslas Square, so very close to the city center. A lot of bars and supermarkets close to the apartment so very well located.

Would you recommend it?

If I had to live in Prague again, I would go to the same type of apartment. Okay, it was quite expensive but the location was very good, I had everything near the flat and the neighborhood was very quiet so overall, it was almost perfect in the apartment I was in.

🍻 Social Life

What are some top bars, clubs, or events you recommend?

For the best street in Prague for night life I would go with Melantrichova which gives you access to the Astronomical Clock in the city center. There's a lot of bars and pubs there including an Irish Pub with a very good atmosphere so I recommend it for sure ! Then for clubs, it depends on which type of music you like to listen to. If you like more commercial and international music I recommend the Duplex which is for me the best club in Prague for international students. Then if you like more techno music, then you'll have a huge variety of famous clubs and others more underground that you can try like the EPIC or the Fuchs2. Other than that, I recommend you to go to football games or hockey games in Prague because the atmosphere there are among the best I ever tried in my life !

🎓 Uni life at Prague University of Business and Economics

Which classes do you recommend… or not?

For the classes I recommend you the World Economy class which is very complete, the teacher is very interesting and you can expect a lot of interesting stuff about the world we're living in. Then of course the czech class could be interesting if you want to be better integrated in the city and the country (if you take the easiest level, it's not that difficult). If you take courses like International Business Operations you can expect a consequent amount of work. This class is demanding and you'll need to be focus if you want to pass it.

Do you have some tips?

Studying at VSE in Prague was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. The university has a strong academic reputation, and I was genuinely impressed by the level of the courses and the dedication of the professors. They were always approachable and ready to help if I needed anything. The students were incredibly friendly too, which made it easy to feel at home and build connections quickly. One tip I’d give is to get involved in student activities early on, it’s a great way to meet people and make the most of your time there. Also, don’t hesitate to explore Prague beyond the tourist spots. If I had to choose again, I’d pick VSE without a second thought.

✈️ Travel

Best trips to do?

One of the best parts of studying in Prague was how easy it was to travel to nearby cities. I took unforgettable trips to Budapest, Bratislava, and Vienna, all just a few hours away by train. Budapest was vibrant and full of life, with its thermal baths and ruin bars offering a unique charm. Bratislava felt cozy and underrated, perfect for a relaxed weekend getaway. But Vienna truly stole the show for me. The city’s elegance, its museums, palaces, and cafés made me feel like I’d stepped into a different era. I spent hours wandering through Schönbrunn and sipping melange in historic coffeehouses. If you’re in Prague, don’t miss Vienna, it’s the kind of place that lingers in your memory long after you’ve left.

🌆 Prague vibe

What do you absolutely need to know to live your best life in Prague?

Living in Prague was incredibly comfortable and surprisingly affordable. Coming from France, I found the cost of living low whether it was groceries, or eating out, everything felt much more budget-friendly. The public transport system was a dream : clean, reliable, and super efficient, with trams and metros running like clockwork. I always felt safe walking around the city, even late at night, which gave me a real sense of peace. The weather was mostly sunny, which I loved, although it could get quite cold in the winter, so layering up was essential. And the food ? Delicious ! From hearty Czech dishes like svíčková to trendy international spots, there was always something tasty to discover.

Would you recommend it?

It was cheap and there were lots of students and activity but I would not recommend it. If you want to live in a dorm (that I recommend, it's really nice to meet other erasmus students), choose Masarykova (Masaryk dormitory, right next to the CVUT). It's much cleaner, has better rooms and furnitures, closer to the Uni and Prague's center, etc. It's worth the price. If you MUST live in Strahov, choose the block 8. It's the most recent building and is slightly better than others.

🍻 Social Life

What are some top bars, clubs, or events you recommend?

Too many cool bars and places to see. If you want to go to a club, avoid Epic club and the 5 story-club. Duplex and Roxy are better. Definitely check for concerts in Prague, the prices are really low

🎓 Uni life at Czech Technical University (CVUT)

Which classes do you recommend… or not?

Do not try to learn Czech except if you absolutely want to, the language is in the top 5 hardest to learn worldwide. In Engineering, the Reverse Engineering course is very interesting but extremely time consuming and complex for its many projects. I'd still recommend it if you're into it but be careful.

Do you have some tips?

The campus is great, would go there again. There are 2 menza (uni restaurant) with great prices for good czech dishes.

I recommend going to the Karlstejn Castle and the hike to the canyon nearby, Visit the Pilsen brewery, Going to Krakow in Poland and visit the salt mine, and visit Auschwitz on the way back...
