The Budapest TL;DR

Budapest is arguably Europe's best-value party capital — ruin bars, thermal baths, and a huge Erasmus scene where your rent and beer money go twice as far as in the west. The universities are solid and the international crowd is massive.

Budapest is one of Europe's great student bargains, a grand, faintly faded imperial capital split by the Danube, where thermal baths, ruin bars and cheap rent make an exchange feel like a permanent adventure.

Partners & Perks

Verified housing partners and student perks in Budapest: no blind deposits, no ghost landlords. Grab one before someone in your group does.

Budapest offers imperial grandeur at Central European prices, which is exactly why it has become an Erasmus favourite. You get world-class universities, thermal baths to soak in after lectures, the legendary ruin-bar nightlife of the Jewish Quarter, and a walkable city split dramatically by the Danube. It is affordable, beautiful and central enough that half of Europe is a cheap train or flight away.

  • ELTE, the technical university BME and Corvinus put several top institutions in one compact city.
  • Rents and daily costs are among the lowest of any major European capital.

Nightlife centres on the ruin bars of District VII, Szimpla Kert being the original, a warren of mismatched furniture and courtyards, plus the mega-club Instant-Fogas and endless cheap bars. The Erasmus scene is huge and tight-knit through ESN, spa parties at Széchenyi are a rite of passage, and a pint costs a fraction of Western Europe. You will not be short of a night out.

  • Start at Szimpla Kert, the original ruin bar, then wander District VII's hidden courtyards.
  • Follow ESN Budapest for pub crawls, boat parties and weekend trips across the region.
  • Do a Széchenyi 'sparty' once, and soak properly at Gellért or Rudas another day.

Budapest is genuinely cheap by EU standards: 600 to 850 euros a month covers a good life. A room runs roughly 120,000 to 220,000 forint, a hearty lunch a few euros, and the BKK monthly transport pass for students is about 3,450 forint, a steal. Eat at étkezde canteens and drink at ruin bars and your money goes a very long way.

  • A room costs about 120,000-220,000 forint; check albérlet.hu and Facebook flat groups.
  • The BKK student monthly pass is roughly 3,450 forint with a valid student status.
  • Lunch at an 'étkezde' canteen for a two-course 'menü' at around 1,500-2,500 forint.

Most exchange students rent a room in a shared flat (an 'albérlet'); the university dorms (kollégium) are cheap but scarce and basic. Search albérlet.hu and the big Erasmus and flatmate Facebook groups, and be ready to move fast because good rooms in the central districts go within hours. Watch for agency fees and always view before paying a deposit.

  • Use albérlet.hu and 'Flatmates and Rooms Budapest' Facebook groups; expect to decide quickly.
  • Districts VII, VIII, IX and XI keep you central and near the campuses.
  • The Budapest Studcasa group is a good place to catch rooms from departing students.

Budapest's BKK network is excellent and cheap: four metro lines (including the M1, the oldest on the continent), a dense tram system where the 4 and 6 run day and night and the number 2 hugs the Danube for the best free sightseeing ride in Europe, plus buses, trolleybuses and the HÉV suburban rail. MOL Bubi bike share fills the gaps.

  • Ride tram 2 along the Pest riverbank for a postcard view at tram-ticket prices.
  • The 4 and 6 tram runs 24 hours around the Grand Boulevard, your nightlife lifeline.
  • Always validate, buy the student monthly pass, and keep your student ID on you.

Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE) is the largest and a top Erasmus host, the Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME) leads in engineering, and Corvinus dominates business and economics, with Semmelweis renowned for medicine. Many programmes run in English, teaching is solid and traditional, and international offices are well used to exchange students. Campuses are scattered but central and metro-linked.

  • ELTE and Corvinus offer wide English-taught catalogues; BME suits engineers and scientists.
  • Register with the Erasmus office in week one to unlock your transport discount and student ID.

It depends on your nationality. EU, EEA, and Swiss students need no visa and simply register their stay for a registration certificate if staying beyond 90 days. Non-EU students staying over 90 days need a residence permit for study purposes, usually started at a Hungarian consulate before arrival and finalised with the immigration office (NDGAP) in Hungary.

Begin early, as processing can be slow and document-heavy: proof of enrolment, funds, accommodation, and health insurance are standard. Once in Budapest, register your address and sort your residence card promptly. Keep multiple copies of every document, as Hungarian administration is bureaucratic and appointments can be limited.

  • EU/EEA/Swiss, no visa; register if staying over 90 days
  • Non-EU over 90 days, study residence permit required
  • Start the process early via a Hungarian consulate
  • Bring proof of funds, insurance, and enrolment

Hungarian food is rich and paprika-heavy: goulash soup, chicken paprikás, and stuffed cabbage, plus street staples like lángos (fried dough with soured cream and cheese) and chimney cake. The Great Market Hall is the place to graze and shop, Unicum and fruit pálinka are the national spirits, and life pauses for the thermal baths, which are as social as they are restorative.

  • Eat lángos and browse the Great Market Hall (Nagyvásárcsarnok) upstairs food stalls.
  • Try a proper goulash soup and chicken paprikás at a traditional étterem.
  • Buy pálinka or a bottle of Unicum as the classic Hungarian tipple to bring home.

District VII, the Jewish Quarter, is the nightlife epicentre and where many students want to live, though it is loud; District V is the elegant, pricier centre. District VIII is gritty and gentrifying with cheaper rooms, District IX (Ferencváros) is up-and-coming near Corvinus, and District XI (Újbuda) across the river suits BME students. The Buda side is calmer, greener and hillier.

  • District VII: ruin bars on your doorstep, lively but noisy.
  • Districts IX and XI: near Corvinus and BME, quieter and better value.
  • Buda (Districts I and II): leafy, residential and calm, a short tram from the action.

Budapest's position makes weekends easy and cheap. Vienna and Bratislava are both around two and a half hours by train, artsy Szentendre a 40-minute HÉV ride, and Lake Balaton, Hungary's summer playground, under two hours. The wine town of Eger and, further out, Prague and Kraków round out a superb regional map, and budget flights from Liszt Ferenc airport reach everywhere.

  • Day-trip to Szentendre (40 minutes on the HÉV) for cobbled streets and galleries.
  • Vienna and Bratislava are about 2.5 hours by train for an easy weekend abroad.
  • In summer head to Lake Balaton (under two hours) for beaches and wine on the north shore.

Always validate transport tickets and carry your student pass, as inspectors swarm the metro exits and fines sting. Learn a couple of Hungarian words, the language is famously hard and locals appreciate the effort even though students speak English. Tap water is safe and free, ask for it, and get to the thermal baths early to beat the crowds.

  • Validate every ticket and keep your student ID handy, ticket inspections are relentless.
  • Learn 'köszönöm' (thank you) and 'egészségedre' (cheers); the effort goes far.
  • Visit the baths on a weekday morning to avoid the worst crowds.

This neighborhood is perfect, with all shops nearby and lots of inexpensive restaurants. There are multiple transportation options less than 5 minutes away. All the popular Erasmus clubs and bars are 10 minutes away (on foot or by public transportation). Plus, it's close to the city center with the basilica, the Danube, and museums. Which classes do you recommend… or not?

project & quality, it's not rewarding digital communication, didn't like it, very theoretical Organizational HR & management is really interesting and stimulating. international financial management, a bit difficult but interesting CSR ethics & management, interesting, simple but redundant online marketing, nice

Do you have some tips?

There are three campuses, nothing fancy, but the ones in the center are close to everything. Registration is very complicated and the administrative procedures are complex. What's more, the teaching staff are unresponsive and offer no help whatsoever. I had a lot of problems with the number of credits, and it was difficult to get any changes made. My advice is not to go to BGE. The only advantage is that the exams and midterms are fairly simple, but the classes are pretty empty and you don't learn much. The schedules are fairly light, so you can enjoy yourself outside of class.

Transport: Use the metro, trams, and buses—buy a monthly pass for convenience. Food & Drink: Try local dishes like gulyás and lángos. Cafés and ruin pubs are a must. Culture: Explore thermal baths, the Buda Castle, Parliament, and ruin bars. Free walking tours help you get the lay of the land. Language: Basic Hungarian phrases go a long way, but many speak English in tourist areas. Money: Hungary uses the forint (HUF), not the euro. Lifestyle: Walk along the Danube, enjoy parks, and embrace café culture—life’s slower and scenic. Social: Join local events, markets, or expat groups to meet people (elb erasmus instagram.

💡 Other Tips

It's a really cool city for an Erasmus exchange, so no stress, just fun!

Would you recommend it?

Yes I highly recommend living here ! Such a good location. Probably the best out of everyone’s I seen. We were close to the Danube and all transportation and everything we needed was in walking distance. It’s right beside Aldi. The apartment itself had 4 rooms. The kitchen was tiny so if your going it would be good to know who you are already living with, however the bedrooms were nice, modern and more spacious. At the start I thought it would be hard to live in the small dining area but we all got used to it really quick and now I love how cosy it is. It’s a very well heated house. Which you will want in the winter here !! :)

🍻 Social Life

What are some top bars, clubs, or events you recommend?

Definitely good for nightlife and social life for making friends. There was about 40+ of us Irish here on Erasmus and I got to know every single one of them. There are lots of Irish pubs and ruin bars, like szimpla kert and Fudge Udvar - a really good local ruin bar. We always went here. Morrisons on a Monday is where you will meet all the erasmsus people it’s such a good night out. The drinks are 60c until 11 on Mondays and on Thursdays it’s unlimited free drink until 2am when you pay €7 at the door. It’s a no brainer. A lot of us joined the Budapest GAA (football) where I made a lot of friends and we even played a match in Vienna. Erasmus life organises tons of trips aswell where you will make soo many friends ! And just really put yourself out there. It’s so worth it.

🎓 Uni life at Essca school of management

Which classes do you recommend… or not?

I recommend picking the Hungarian culture class and the Hungarian language. These were both quite chill and I actually enjoyed learning a little bit of the language. It’s just the basics so really not too bad. Doing business in CEE is another good one to pick, there isn’t too much in it. I also chose humanistic management , consumer behaviour and the cross cultural class. None of them are hard but they are extremely long classes 3/4 hours so honestly are quite boring. A lot of people complained about the cross cultural class and we ended up getting a new teacher at the very end. So I’m not sure I’d recommend that one. It’s not a very organised college. But it’s way easier than UL and the exams aren’t bad at all. So honestly it’s great for Erasmus if you want the whole experience outside of college.

Do you have some tips?

The campus is absolutely tiny. It’s like a national school. It’s on the 5th floor of a corporate building and you just move around like 3 different rooms everyday. It did make it all very easy , we didn’t have to look for anything or ever get lost so I would recommend it for Erasmus. One thing to note is the your timetable isn’t set and class times and days change every week. But you can see a calendar of the school year online. It’s also a private French college. So you will be with all French people and it’s a highly recognised university in France. But if you want the big more serious university life the college right beside it - Cornivus would be for you and this has lots of activities and clubs you can join I believe. This was my original choice and a lot of my friends are there.

✈️ Travel

Best trips to do?

One of the best things about Budapest is its Central European location and this is actually one of the main reasons I picked it so I could travel and I did loads of!!!! I went to Octoberfest in Munich , Prague , Vienna , Slovakia , Paris , Switzerland, Strasbourg and trips around Hungary like lake balaton. Other trips my friends went on include Krakow , Romania and Slovenia All of which eveyone highly recommended !!!

🌆 Budapest vibe

What do you absolutely need to know to live your best life in Budapest?

The city life was fantastic ! When we first got to Budapest in September it was 30 degrees everyday ! So pack summer clothes even though it will feel like it’s over in Ireland. You need to be so careful about not getting fined in the beginning in Budapest until you get the hang on transport. Buy a monthly transport pass on the Budapest Go App and you can use it on absolutely everything bar the airport shuttle bus. If you get a student ticket. You will have to have proof that you are a student in Budapest on you at all times or else they will fine you so in the end I just purchased an adult ticket and I never had problems again. Don’t chance not buying a ticket as you will be checked on literally everything and it’s really serious if you don’t pay the fine. There is so much to do in Budapest you will never ever be bored, there are so many sights to see and things to do. You will genuinely have the best time ever and if you are thinking about going you need to do it. It was the best 4 months ever ! I experienced so many things I thought I never would. Rent and drink is much cheaper than home but after that everything is pretty much the same. It gets really cold around the end of November so that’s when you will really need to wrap up. Try the goulash in the for sale pub it’s really good and just get to know the culture !

💡 Other Tips

If you are thinking about it at all , just do it!
