Warsaw is Poland's fast-moving capital, a rebuilt-from-rubble city of glass towers, riverside beaches and a serious cultural and nightlife scene that stays gentle on a student budget.

Partners & Perks

Verified housing partners and student perks in Warsaw: no blind deposits, no ghost landlords. Grab one before someone in your group does.

We’re still lining up verified partners in Warsaw. In the meantime, ask the Warsaw group for the housing leads students are using right now.

Poland's capital is a city of striking contrasts: a meticulously reconstructed old town beside gleaming skyscrapers, the imposing Palace of Culture beside hip riverside bars. It's home to the University of Warsaw and the Warsaw University of Technology, both highly regarded, and offers big-city opportunities, a strong job and internship market, and a cultural life to match, all for a fraction of Western European prices. It's the pragmatic, high-energy choice for a Polish exchange.

  • The University of Warsaw is Poland's largest and highest-ranked university.
  • Warsaw was rebuilt almost from scratch after 1945, giving it a unique blend of old and ultramodern.

Warsaw's nightlife has grown up fast, centred on the gritty-cool Praga district across the river, the bars of Nowy Swiat and Pawilony, and food-hall hangouts like Hala Koszyki and Elektrownia Powisle. In summer the Vistula's wild eastern bank becomes a strip of open-air beach bars. With two big universities and a large Erasmus community, the social calendar is packed year-round.

  • The Pawilony off Nowy Swiat and the Praga district are the go-to areas for bars and clubs.
  • In summer, the Vistula riverbank beach bars are the place to be after dark.
  • Ask the Warsaw group on Studcasa which food halls and Praga venues are worth your first weekend.

Warsaw is the most expensive city in Poland but still a bargain by Western standards. Budget around 3,000 to 4,300 zloty a month all-in (roughly 700 to 1,000 euros), with rent the main cost and everything else, from transit to eating out, notably cheap. Milk bars and food halls keep daily spending down even in the capital.

  • A milk-bar meal like Bar Prasowy costs around 15 to 25 zloty; food halls are pricier but still good value.
  • Rooms in shared flats run roughly 1,600 to 2,600 zloty a month, cheaper in Praga and the outer districts.

Central Srodmiescie is convenient but pricier, while Praga across the river is the hip, more affordable choice with fast metro links. Mokotow and Ochota are leafy, residential and popular with students, and Powisle is trendy and close to the University of Warsaw. Halls (akademiki) are cheap and a sound first-term option. Use OLX and Facebook groups, and start early.

  • Praga and Mokotow for value; Powisle or Srodmiescie to be central and close to campus.
  • Search OLX.pl and Facebook groups like Mieszkania i pokoje Warszawa, plus the Warsaw group on Studcasa.
  • University akademiki near the campuses are cheap and social; apply early through your faculty.

Warsaw has the best public transport in Poland: two metro lines, extensive trams and buses, and city rail, all run by ZTM, with big discounts for students under 26. The metro and trams cover the city efficiently, and the Veturilo bike-share is handy in the warmer months. Use the jakdojade app for routes and mobile tickets, and validate every ticket.

  • Buy a discounted student ZTM travelcard for cheap unlimited metro, tram and bus travel.
  • The M1 and M2 metro lines are the backbone; use jakdojade for live times and tickets.
  • Veturilo city bikes are a cheap, easy way around the flat centre from spring to autumn.

The University of Warsaw is Poland's leading university, strong in law, economics, the social sciences and the humanities, while the Warsaw University of Technology is among the best engineering schools in the region. The SGH Warsaw School of Economics is the top choice for business. Many programmes are taught in English, and the capital's employers make internships genuinely accessible.

  • The University of Warsaw and SGH both offer strong English-taught programmes for exchange students.
  • Warsaw's job market makes term-time internships realistic; the university careers offices can help.

It depends on your nationality. EU, EEA, and Swiss students need no visa and just register their stay if it runs beyond three months. Non-EU students staying over 90 days generally need a national (type D) student visa from a Polish consulate before arrival, and then register for a temporary residence card if staying a full year.

Start early: consular processing can be slow and you'll need proof of enrolment, funds, accommodation, and health insurance. Once in Poland, you may need to register your address (meldunek) locally. Keep copies of everything, as Polish offices are paperwork-heavy and appointments can be scarce in the big cities.

  • EU/EEA/Swiss, no visa; register if staying over 3 months
  • Non-EU over 90 days, type D student visa before arrival
  • You may need to register your address (meldunek) locally
  • Bring proof of funds, insurance, and enrolment

Warsaw's food runs from cheap-and-cheerful milk bars serving pierogi and zurek to the buzzing modern food halls of Hala Koszyki and Elektrownia Powisle. The city also has a notably good Vietnamese food scene, a legacy of its large community. Culture is serious and rewarding, from Chopin concerts in Lazienki Park to the moving POLIN and Warsaw Uprising museums.

  • Eat pierogi and zurek at a classic milk bar like Bar Prasowy for a few zloty.
  • Explore Hala Mirowska and the Hala Koszyki food hall, and seek out the city's excellent Vietnamese spots.

Srodmiescie is the central business-and-nightlife core around the Palace of Culture. Praga across the Vistula is the artsy, up-and-coming district full of converted factories and bars. Powisle by the river is trendy and student-friendly near the university, while Mokotow and Ochota are green, calm residential areas favoured by locals and students alike.

  • Powisle and Srodmiescie to be central; Praga for creative energy and cheaper rent.
  • Wander Praga's Koneser Centre and street-art courtyards for the city's coolest reinvented district.

Warsaw's central position and transport links make weekends easy. Lodz, with its post-industrial cool, is about ninety minutes by train, the film-set-pretty town of Kazimierz Dolny two hours, and the Baltic coast city of Gdansk under three hours on a fast train. Krakow is around two and a half hours by rail, and Warsaw's airports open up cheap flights across Europe.

  • Gdansk on the Baltic coast is under three hours by fast Pendolino train for a weekend by the sea.
  • Krakow is about two and a half hours by train; book the Pendolino ahead for the best fares.
  • Kazimierz Dolny, two hours away, is a picturesque riverside town for a slow weekend.

Get your student travelcard sorted early and always hold a validated ticket, as inspectors are active and fines are steep. Don't overlook Praga and the riverside, which is where the city's coolest side lives. And make the most of Warsaw's transport links and airports to travel widely, since the capital is one of the cheapest bases in Europe from which to explore.

  • Sort a discounted 90-day ZTM travelcard once you have your student ID; it pays for itself fast.
  • Use the two Warsaw airports for cheap flights across Europe on free weekends.

🏠 Housing

What kind of place was it?

Coliving / Shared House

How much was the rent per month?

430€

Where was it located?

15 min by bus from University, 30 min by tram from city centre

Would you recommend it?

Yes, it was nice, the apartment had everything we needed and the price was lower than the average

🍻 Social Life

What are some top bars, clubs, or events you recommend?

Best disco for latino songs is cubano, chicas and gorillas is a really nice bar, cheapest beer at Bambolejo and in that street you can find other nice bars

🎓 Uni life at University of Warsaw, Faculty of Economic Sciences

Which classes do you recommend… or not?

I took only classes without exams, so text mining and big data analytics. these are classes from master level

Do you have some tips?

The registration was easy, but you’ll probably want to do it right away in the first hours after it opens. The campus is average, just a building. I’d like to try another university next time.

✈️ Travel

Best trips to do?

Warsaw is in an amazing location for traveling to the Baltics, the Balkans, Germany, Hungary, and the Czech Republic, even the northern countries

🌆 Warsaw vibe

What do you absolutely need to know to live your best life in Warsaw?

Public transportation in Warsaw is really good and cheap, you can get a 3-month pass for around €30, which will take you anywhere you need. Even at night, the buses are fairly reliable. Just be aware of drunk people, they’re harmless most of the time, but it’s wise to stay alert. Overall, Warsaw is pretty safe. The nightlife is great, and you’ll meet lots of Erasmus students. If you want to visit museums, check their free days, as most museums have at least one day with free entry. If you need a SIM card, check Uniperks, they have a promotion for 3 months free with Orange Flex.

Powisle, 10 mins from uni

Would you recommend it?

Great location but dated and far too small for 4 people

What are some top bars, clubs, or events you recommend?

Not as organised as home university, but very friendly students and always something happening

🎓 Uni life at Uniwersytet Warszawski

Which classes do you recommend… or not?

Teachers all spoke perfect English, some classes dull and overly reliant on presentations. Also disorganised in terms of online resources

Do you have some tips?

Registration fairly easy but lots of forms/beaurocracy, overall good experience

🏠 Housing

What kind of place was it?

Coliving / Shared House

How much was the rent per month?

Around 600€/month

Where was it located?

In Wola, 20min from university and from the center by bus

Would you recommend it?

I have a big room with a bed and a couch, it is a residential area so it is quiet but still close to the center and everything, many night buses around. But the shared areas in the flat are really small and unfortunately my flatmates never clean anything and are loud

🍻 Social Life

What are some top bars, clubs, or events you recommend?

Most of the clubs are in Mazowiecka street. Teatro Cubano on Monday is free and multipub on Wednesday (30zl for unlimited beer until 1am). Good and cheap bar is Chicas & Gorillas

🎓 Uni life at University of Warsaw

Which classes do you recommend… or not?

Football in Europe is interesting because it’s different from « basic » political science classes Political radicalism, populism, and extremism is very dense but very interesting to understand world politics

Do you have some tips?

I study on the main campus in the center town so it is cool, registration is easy you just need to do it directly when it opens if you want to have the classes you want (places are limited ofc). I don’t have much classes so I don’t really spend much time on the campus

✈️ Travel

Best trips to do?

If you buy the student card you have -50% on every train ticket and there is a lot of city to visit in Poland like Krakow, Wroclaw, Gdansk, Poznan… You can also find cheap flights for big European cities

🌆 Warsaw vibe

What do you absolutely need to know to live your best life in Warsaw?

Be careful to have a polish or international student card to have reduced transport tickets Daily life costs less than in most European countries (I’m French) Biedronka is great for groceries (you can find everything and it is not expensive) Always cross the crosswalk at the green light!!

💡 Other Tips

Great city very underrated The weather is not always so bad but winter arrives quickly and the night too haha Most people speak English but not everyone and they are not always nice with strangers but it’s ok as long as you respect everything

The transport here is amazing. But the night life sometimes is weird, especially in the night. If you re not in a group in the night, dont walk in shady places. Its a risk.(personal experience)

💡 Other Tips

Dont be obsessed with finding friends in the fiest weeks. Enjoy your presence, enjoy the city, get to know yourself better. I had this fear of missing out because in the first weeks didnt really have much friends, when i stopped worrying, they found me. For example i was charging my phone on the floor in Lodz train station and one okder guy asked me if he can charge, i told him in 5min, in those 5min another erasmus student came to me and we became friends. In Lublin the same in the station the train was late (i didnt know) and heard some girls talk in english and went to them and asked about the train. That was one of the best train ride i had. Get outside of the house everyday. I have this “rule” : 15min walk everyday, i dont walk 15min everyday because i adventure more to find more shortcuts, cafes, next to my home. Enjoy your own erasmus, not what you see in social media!
