London is a world in one city, with dozens of universities, every cuisine and scene imaginable and endless free museums, but it is also the UK's most expensive place, so budgeting is everything.

🤝

Partners & Perks

Verified housing partners and student perks in London: no blind deposits, no ghost landlords. Grab one before someone in your group does.

You get a global student hub where whatever your interest, there is a scene, society or club for it. Add world-class free museums and unmatched connections, and it is hard to be bored.

  • UCL, King's, Imperial, LSE and Queen Mary make it a global student hub.
  • The British Museum, Tate Modern and the V&A are world-class and free.
  • Every interest has a scene, society or venue somewhere in the city.

Nightlife spreads across the city, from Shoreditch and Camden to Peckham and Brixton, alongside union nights and the West End. In a city this big, it helps to have a way in.

  • Nightlife spreads across Shoreditch, Camden, Peckham and Brixton.
  • Union nights, warehouse parties and the West End all coexist.
  • The Studcasa London group helps you find your people in a city this big.

London is the UK's most expensive city and rent will dominate your budget, so plan carefully. The good news is that culture can be nearly free.

  • Budget realistically GBP 1,300-2,200 a month, with a room alone often GBP 900-1,200.
  • An 18+ Student Oyster photocard gives 30% off Travelcards and Bus passes.
  • Free museums, parks and cheap theatre day-seats keep culture affordable.

Zones 2 and 3 balance cost and commute, and almost everyone shares. Protect yourself by viewing first and checking the deposit is protected.

  • Zones 2-3 (New Cross, Mile End, Walthamstow, Peckham) balance cost and commute.
  • Expect to share; SpareRoom and the Studcasa London group are your best tools.
  • Never pay a deposit before viewing, and check the landlord protects it in a scheme.

The transport network is vast and integrated, with fare caps that reward heavy use. A student Oyster and a good app make it manageable.

  • The Tube, buses, Overground, Elizabeth line and DLR all take contactless with daily and weekly caps.
  • Get an 18+ Student Oyster for cheaper travel; Citymapper plans every route.
  • Santander Cycles are handy for short central hops.

London hosts a huge range of universities, many world-leading. The academic year typically runs across three terms.

  • UCL, King's College London, Imperial, LSE, Queen Mary and many more host exchange students.
  • Terms usually run late September to June.

Since Brexit, EU citizens no longer have free movement, so most non-Irish students need permission to study. For an exchange of up to six months you can often come under the Short-term study route or simply as a Standard Visitor, depending on your nationality and course length. For a full year you will need a Student visa sponsored by your host university.

What applies depends entirely on your passport, so confirm with the university and official UK government guidance early. The Student visa needs a CAS reference from your uni, proof of funds and usually the immigration health surcharge, so budget both time and money for it.

  • Exchange under 6 months, often Standard Visitor or Short-term study
  • Full year, Student visa with a CAS from your uni
  • Irish citizens, no visa needed under the Common Travel Area
  • Budget for the immigration health surcharge on longer visas

You can eat your way around the world here, often most cheaply in the outer boroughs. The cultural calendar never really stops.

  • Borough Market, Brick Lane (curries and 24-hour bagels) and Chinatown are food essentials.
  • Every world cuisine is here, frequently cheapest in the outer boroughs.
  • Notting Hill Carnival each August is Europe's biggest street party.

Each compass point of London has its own character and price. The real texture of the city lives in its neighbourhoods, not zone 1.

  • East (Shoreditch, Hackney) for nightlife and creativity.
  • South (Brixton, Peckham, Clapham) for a younger, cheaper mix.
  • North (Camden, Islington) for markets and music.

Historic cities and the coast are an hour away, and the Eurostar puts the Continent within reach. It is one of the easiest bases for weekend travel in Europe.

  • Brighton, Oxford and Cambridge are all about 1 hour by train.
  • Eurostar from St Pancras reaches Paris, Brussels and Amsterdam in about 2.5-4 hours.
  • Windsor, Bath and the coast make easy day trips.

London eats budgets faster than anywhere in the UK, so track spending from day one. Explore beyond the centre to find its real character.

  • Track your spending, as London drains budgets faster than anywhere in the UK.
  • Always tap the same card or device to avoid paying twice on TfL.
  • Explore beyond zone 1; the real character is in the neighbourhoods.

Good atmosphere, very central, but it is advisable to book early to have a choice of different room options.

🍻 Social Life

What are some top bars, clubs, or events you recommend?

London is still a northern city, so you should expect bars and clubs to close early in general. Fatsoma and Rtickets are great apps for buying tickets to events at clubs. Soho is a great place to go out at the weekend and have a drink in the neighbourhood.

🎓 Uni life at London School of Economics and Political Science

Which classes do you recommend… or not?

Read the course content carefully, but whatever happens, you will have a week at the beginning of the semester to change your courses. The finance courses are particularly interesting, although the others are too. Overall, all the courses are extremely well explained, which means you won't get lost.

Do you have some tips?

The campus is in the heart of London, it's like a small neighbourhood. It's fairly new. Attending classes still requires you to work on your own, individually. London is certainly not the most exotic destination for an exchange programme, but if your goal is to travel throughout your exchange and have an unforgettable experience on the other side of the world, while working little, then LSE is probably not the ideal choice. You do have free time, but you mustn't forget that you're in London, the weather isn't great and you still have to work quite hard.

✈️ Travel

Best trips to do?

From London, many people travel to Oxford or Cambridge, which are accessible by train in 1.5 hours from London. Paris is also very close, as are the Netherlands, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland.

A capital city that remains lively, but extremely expensive. The food is far from amazing. The weather is not as bad as people think, nor is the temperature.

If I could, I wouldn’t choose it again. It’s very expensive. And the management doesn’t really take care of your basic needs especially when they get their full payment. I would advise reading the reviews on trustpilot first

Business Ethics was very interesting but had a lot of readings. Introduction to Logic is an introductory course so I thought it would be easy. But it’s not!

Do you have some tips?

The campus is way bigger than what I’m used to. It’s spread across many different buildings. The first day we had to take our passports and plane boarding passes to register. I thought it was odd. So keep your boarding passes intact for the registration if you’re travelling from outside the UK.

At the University of East London campus in Docklands.

Would you recommend it?

I really enjoy living on the University of East London campus in Docklands. The location is great, it’s peaceful, safe, and right by the river, which makes the environment very pleasant. I also appreciate being close to my classes and surrounded by other students, which helps create a nice community feeling. The campus facilities are convenient, and it’s easy to reach central London whenever I want to explore the city. Overall, I feel comfortable and happy living here. If I had to choose again, I would definitely pick the same place. It’s been a positive and enjoyable experience, and I think it’s the best option for student life in London.

🍻 Social Life

What are some top bars, clubs, or events you recommend?

I don’t usually go out very often, as I enjoy spending quiet evenings on campus or exploring new places during the day. However, I’ve been to a few nice places around London, for example, the Sky Garden, which has amazing views of the city, and Boxpark in Shoreditch, which has a really fun and lively atmosphere. I also went to a student night at a club in Canary Wharf, which was a great experience to meet other students and enjoy some music. Even though I’m not someone who goes out all the time, I really like discovering new spots when I have the chance.

🎓 Uni life at University of East London

Which classes do you recommend… or not?

I would recommend the business classes, as they are really interesting and practical. The law classes are also great, they help you understand how legal concepts apply to real business situations. Overall, both subjects are engaging and useful for the future.

Do you have some tips?

The University of East London has a really nice campus, especially in Docklands — it’s modern, safe, and has beautiful views by the river. The atmosphere is calm but still social, which I really enjoy. The registration process was quite easy and well-organized, and the staff were helpful whenever I had questions. If I had to choose again, I would definitely pick UEL. It offers a good balance between studies, campus life, and the opportunity to explore London.

✈️ Travel

Best trips to do?

There are so many great trips you can take from London! I’d recommend visiting Oxford or Cambridge for a day, both cities are beautiful and full of history. Brighton is also a great option if you want to enjoy the seaside and a more relaxed atmosphere. If you have a bit more time, Bath and Windsor are amazing for their architecture and culture. And for nature, a trip to the Cotswolds or Richmond Park is definitely worth it!

🌆 London vibe

What do you absolutely need to know to live your best life in London?

To live your best life in London, you need to know how to manage your budget, the city can be expensive, so planning ahead really helps. It’s also important to learn how to use public transport, especially the Tube and buses, since they make it easy to get anywhere. I’d also say: take time to explore different areas of the city, each neighborhood has its own vibe! And don’t forget to balance study and relaxation: enjoy the parks, museums, and cafés when you can. Finally, be open to meeting new people, London is super diverse, and you can learn a lot from everyone you meet.

💡 Other Tips

My main tip would be to stay organized and manage your time well, university life in London can get busy very quickly! Don’t hesitate to ask for help from teachers or student services if you need support; people are always willing to help. Also, try to enjoy the experience, take advantage of all the opportunities the city offers, from cultural events to networking and student activities. And finally, remember to find a good balance between studying, social life, and rest, that’s the key to having a great time here.
