Monterrey is Mexico's industrial powerhouse, a wealthy, fast-paced northern city ringed by dramatic mountains, home to the prestigious Tec de Monterrey and a serious outdoor-adventure scene.

Partners & Perks

Verified housing partners and student perks in Monterrey: no blind deposits, no ghost landlords. Grab one before someone in your group does.

Framed by the Sierra Madre and the iconic Cerro de la Silla, Monterrey is Mexico's richest, most business-minded city and home to the Tecnologico de Monterrey, one of Latin America's top universities. It is modern, efficient and safe in its central and southern zones, with world-class hiking, climbing and canyoning on the doorstep. Expect a more North-American pace than the rest of Mexico.

  • Home to Tec de Monterrey, one of Latin America's most prestigious universities
  • Ringed by the Sierra Madre, with superb hiking, climbing and canyoning nearby
  • Mexico's wealthiest, most industrial city, with a fast, modern feel

Nightlife splits between the historic Barrio Antiguo, all bars, clubs and live music near the Macroplaza, and the upscale San Pedro Garza Garcia, the wealthiest district in Latin America, with its rooftop bars and restaurants. The Tec area keeps things student-priced, and carne asada backyard barbecues are the true regio social ritual. Weekends often mean the mountains.

  • Head to Barrio Antiguo for bars, clubs and live music
  • San Pedro Garza Garcia has the upscale rooftop bars and restaurants
  • Get invited to a carne asada, the northern backyard-barbecue tradition

As Mexico's wealthiest city, Monterrey costs a bit more, so around 600 to 950 euros (roughly 11,500 to 18,000 pesos) a month, with San Pedro the priciest patch by far. Everyday food and the metro stay cheap, but rents near the Tec and in San Pedro climb. Living in San Nicolas or Escobedo and using the metro keeps costs down.

  • A monthly public-transport top-up is cheap, and the Metro flat fare is low
  • San Pedro rents are steep, while San Nicolas and Escobedo are far cheaper
  • Cabrito and steak dinners are a treat, but taquerias keep everyday eating cheap

Housing depends on your campus: the Tec de Monterrey draws students to the Tecnologico area and San Pedro, while UANL students cluster in San Nicolas. Shared flats and student residences near the Tec are convenient but pricey, and the metro line makes cheaper northern suburbs viable. Inmuebles24 and Facebook groups lead the hunt.

  • Live near the Tec or on Metro Line 2 if you study at Tec de Monterrey
  • San Nicolas suits UANL students and is much cheaper than San Pedro
  • Ask the Studcasa Monterrey group about safe, well-connected colonias

Metrorrey's three metro lines, plus the Transmetro and Ecovia bus-rapid-transit corridors, cover the core, paid with the rechargeable Feria card. Monterrey is car-centric, spread out and hot, so many students rely on Uber and DiDi, which are cheap. For the mountains you will want to arrange a lift or a car share.

  • Use Metrorrey (Lines 1 to 3) and the Ecovia BRT with a Feria card
  • Uber and DiDi are cheap and cover the car-centric sprawl
  • Arrange a car share for weekend trips into the Sierra Madre

The Tecnologico de Monterrey's flagship campus is the star, strong in engineering, business and tech, with extensive English-taught courses and one of Mexico's biggest exchange programmes. The public UANL is the largest university in the north, and UDEM and the Universidad Regiomontana add further options. English support is better here than in most Mexican cities.

  • Tec de Monterrey's main campus offers extensive English-taught courses
  • UANL is the huge public alternative with a broad course catalogue

What you need depends on your nationality and how long you're staying, so treat this as a starting point and confirm with the Mexican consulate for your country. Many nationalities, including most Europeans, can enter visa-free as tourists for up to 180 days, which covers a single semester. For a full academic year or formal enrolment, you'll usually apply for a temporary resident student visa at a consulate before you travel.

Start early, since consulate appointments and document legalisation take time.

  • Short exchange under 180 days, often visa-free entry for many nationalities
  • Full year or formal enrolment, temporary resident student visa from a consulate
  • Bring your university acceptance letter and proof of funds to the appointment
  • Requirements vary by nationality; always confirm with your Mexican consulate

The north eats meat: cabrito (spit-roasted kid goat) is Monterrey's signature, and the carne asada barbecue is a way of life, alongside machacado con huevo for breakfast and flour rather than corn tortillas. Finish with glorias, the caramel-and-pecan sweets from nearby Linares. Norteno music and cowboy culture complete the picture.

  • Try cabrito al pastor at a classic regio restaurant like El Rey del Cabrito
  • Get invited to, or host, a carne asada with flour tortillas
  • Buy glorias, the local caramel-pecan sweets, from Linares

San Pedro Garza Garcia is the affluent, safe district of malls, restaurants and nightlife, while Barrio Antiguo is the historic core for bars and culture near the Macroplaza. The Tecnologico area is the student zone around the campus, and San Nicolas and Escobedo are cheaper northern suburbs home to UANL and good metro links.

  • San Pedro Garza Garcia: upscale, safe, with the best dining and nightlife
  • Barrio Antiguo: historic centre, bars and live music
  • Tec area or San Nicolas: student zones near the two big universities

The outdoors is Monterrey's weekend playground. The Cola de Caballo waterfall and the pueblo magico of Santiago are 40 minutes away, the Grutas de Garcia caves and the Canon de la Huasteca just as close, and Chipinque offers hiking within the city. Further out, Real de Catorce is a haunting four-hour trip and Saltillo an easy hour.

  • Cola de Caballo waterfall and Santiago pueblo magico: about 40 minutes
  • Hike Chipinque or the Canon de la Huasteca right on the city's edge
  • Real de Catorce ghost-town weekend: about 4 hours

Summers are brutally hot and dry, so plan outdoor adventures for spring or autumn and carry water. The central and southern districts are safe, but ask locals about areas to avoid. Use Uber or DiDi given the sprawl, and do not leave without trying canyoning at Matacanes if you are outdoorsy. English gets you further here than elsewhere in Mexico.

  • Save serious hiking for spring or autumn, as the summer heat is punishing
  • Use Uber or DiDi to cover the spread-out, car-centric city
  • Ask the Studcasa Monterrey group about canyoning trips and safe neighbourhoods

🏠 Housing

What kind of place was it?

Coliving / Shared House

How much was the rent per month?

450€

Where was it located?

San Pedro, 10 minutes from the university

Would you recommend it?

Yes, this house is really good and cheap, but the fees are not included. The place is very safe and near to the university.

🍻 Social Life

What are some top bars, clubs, or events you recommend?

Regarding the university, some parties are organised by ILINK. But the best place to hang out is in the center of San Pedro, there are a lot of clubs like Cosmo, Strana and The Six.

🎓 Uni life at Universidad de Monterrey

Which classes do you recommend… or not?

I would recommend taking classes in English because it's generally easier. However, most Mexican students only take classes in Spanish, so if your goal is to immerse yourself in the local culture and improve your Spanish, I would recommend choosing Spanish-taught courses. On the other hand, if you want to meet and spend more time with international students, English classes are the better option.

Do you have some tips?

The university has everything you might need on campus: a gym, tennis courts, a running track, and plenty of places to eat and grab a coffee, including Starbucks, Subway, and other food options.

✈️ Travel

Best trips to do?

During my exchange, I had the opportunity to travel all around Mexico. I visited places such as Santiago de Querétaro, Mexico City, the Yucatán Peninsula, Oaxaca, Puerto Escondido, La Paz, and many others. My favorite destinations were definitely La Paz (I highly recommend renting a car to explore the surrounding beaches), Oaxaca, Puerto Escondido, and Bacalar, which is absolutely amazing. Each destination offers a unique experience, from incredible landscapes and beaches to rich culture and amazing local food.

🌆 the city vibe

What do you absolutely need to know to live your best life in the city?

Monterrey can feel a little boring if you don't take the opportunity to travel, especially because the weather can be quite unpredictable. However, the city itself has some great places to explore, particularly Barrio Antiguo, which is one of the liveliest and most charming areas. If you are living in San Pedro or La Fama, I also recommend spending time in downtown San Pedro. Every Sunday, there is a local market that is definitely worth visiting. Keep in mind that getting to downtown Monterrey can become expensive over time, especially if you rely on Uber, as the distance is quite long and traffic is often heavy.

🏠 Housing

What kind of place was it?

Coliving / Shared House

How much was the rent per month?

Around 500€ per month with the charges

Where was it located?

15 min from the school in walk

Would you recommend it?

Yes! I highly recommend it. It was a fairly large house with 3 bedrooms. It was very well equipped and comfortable with plenty of space and a terrace. The la flores were very nice and help full. If I have to stay more time I wouldn’t hesitate to keep this house.

🍻 Social Life

What are some top bars, clubs, or events you recommend?

There are lots of options for parties. Every wednesdays there was a before in Mercado Revolucion (a space mainly for international students but every people is welcomed) and then an after at the Normal, a nightclub. It was very great but you have lots of other options to going out. The Strana and the Empire are my favorite after the Normal.

🎓 Uni life at Tec de Monterrey

Which classes do you recommend… or not?

I am in International Business and when I realized my courses sélection I took some courses of another career like « introduction to econometrics » and « organizational business processes ». I didn’t recommend these courses if you are not in engineer because it was very difficult with strong bases. The other courses were very good. I recommend taking « Strategy and talent ».

Do you have some tips?

Yesss! The campus of Monterrey is amazing. There are lot of space, animals, greenery and that makes the expérience very comfortable and pleasant. There are also lots of animations and activités organised during the semester and that is pretty. You have also access to lots of space for doing sport for free. The registration is pretty easy, just make sure to meet the deadlines and be carefull with the course sélection. You have to be connected on time to have you desired courses. I stay for one year and I decided to change of campus to discover other things but I really recommend the one of Monterrey!

✈️ Travel

Best trips to do?

I think Monterrey has not the best localisation for travelling but there are lots of opportunities. Even in the city you can go for lots of hikings that are very good like « Cerro de la Silla ». It is wonderfull !! My favorite travelling was in Puerto Vallarta. Taking flights is very easy there are lots of flights availiable. I advice you to anticipate your travels and don’t miss the check-in…

🌆 Monterrey vibe

What do you absolutely need to know to live your best life in Monterrey?

For the transports, It's really not advisable to take public transportation. Use Uber or Didi instead, which are very inexpensive. For the cost of living, I find that groceries are quite expensive. Keep in mind that Monterrey is a very developed city, and therefore some prices are high compared to other Mexican cities. However, there are many activities with very reasonable prices (cinema, bowling, etc.). If you want to order food, I recommend Rappi and for the flights, trip.com. I think it's important to get moving and do activities, go out, etc. to make the most of the experience! And above all, don't hesitate to reach out to others! Mexicans are incredibly welcoming.

How much was the rent per month?

8500mxn (400USD) with ResidenciasTec (i dont recommend)

Where was it located?

It was very close to Tec (university) like 7min by walking! In a safe place, close to restaurants and shops/groceries

Would you recommend it?

Definitively NOT! It's cheap but doesn't worth it! You can not invite anyone, share your room with someone else... (I knew about that) and Mexicans are really dirties I would definitevly recommend to go in VILLAS TEC! or an Airbnb close to Tec.. Honestly, the only two reason why I don't recommend are : - You are a foreigner.. You are going to have a lot of success with mexican girls/guys... If you live in ResidenciasTec, I will never be able to invite your girls, flirts, dates.. in your place... So think about it, if you want to have some experiences with latinas/latinos (really easy here) - I thought by being in the university student residences I would speak a lot with others and make me some friends, but not really, not that much... The only reason why I would recommend is because it's cheap and close to Tec...

🍻 Social Life

What are some top bars, clubs, or events you recommend?

Wowww I will miss it so much ahah It's so amazing.. so many parties, nightclubs, bars, fiestas latinas in Barrio Antiguo... BUT don't make the same mistake than me: as soon as possible, from the beginning, make you some international friends, as you they are all looking for travelling and partying... (don't favour Mexicans because they NEVER hang out) There are a lot of amazing parties on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday... A really recommend you to go in Barrio Antiguo for latina's culture, latina's musics and danses... on each Wednesday there is an event named GoodLife (they have a whatsapp group) ALSO travel a lot!! and discover the areas of Monterrey: Saltillo, Santiago, Cuatro CIenegas..

Would you recommend it?

I would definitely recommend going for residences near TEC, there are some great ones for the same price I paid, that have more amenities! Also, living near TEC while being at UDEM was both something great and a bit stupid. There are more people to meet at TEC, and campus which I was lucky to have access to thanks to my TEC friends was better overall but I was never with UDEM people, and it was a 20 euro budget each week to go to UDEM by Uber

🍻 Social Life

What are some top bars, clubs, or events you recommend?

Barrio Antiguo is sick if you like more techno hous emusic, and if you are more into commercial: the Normal, Cosmo and the Empire are the ones people go to.

🎓 Uni life at UDEM

Which classes do you recommend… or not?

I recommend at UDEM taking the spanish and Vida y cultura in Mexico if you just want to chill, go on travels, do nothing. INteresting courses are Seminar on NOrth America to learn about the country.

Do you have some tips?

Campus was cool, but for comparing with TEC, there is less amenities like no swimming pool for ex.

Monterrey is central to lots of cities, so there are always some direct travels from monterrey. I loved Puerto escondido!

It's 3 houses together, each for 5 people, so we are 15. It can be loud if you roomate like to party on the terasse, but we have common space, each has its own bathroom. It's close from the uni (15 min walking) and from the supermarket (10 min).

🍻 Social Life

We have few clubs that are our go-to : Cosmo, The Normal, Panorama, etc. Everything is far so we have to take uber (10-15 min driving).

🎓 Uni life at UDEM

Which classes do you recommend… or not?

There are plenty of classes in spanish, but few in english. For most of the classes, it is easy enough if you work a little bit. We have a lot of homework (that don't especially take time), and 3 partial exams.

Do you have some tips?

The campus is large, reminds me of an american campus a bit. Registration was easy. The uni is fine

Thereis not much to see in the city, it is very recent and a lot for industry : business. There is only few street that are old (Barrio Antiguo). Perfect for hiking, the city is surrounded by the mountains.
