The Dublin TL;DR

Everything runs on chat — pub culture means you make friends fast, and the craic is genuinely a lifestyle. Small cities, huge social scenes, and the whole island is a weekend trip away.

Dublin is a small, walkable capital with a giant literary and pub culture, world-ranked universities and a young, international feel driven by its tech scene. It is expensive and the housing is tight, but the craic and the coastline more than compensate.

Partners & Perks

Verified housing partners and student perks in Dublin: no blind deposits, no ghost landlords. Grab one before someone in your group does.

We’re still lining up verified partners in Dublin. In the meantime, ask the Dublin group for the housing leads students are using right now.

Dublin punches far above its size: a compact, walkable city with Trinity's cobbles at its heart, a pub on every corner and a literary history to match anywhere. It is young and international, home to the European bases of Google, Meta and half of Silicon Valley, so the student crowd is genuinely mixed. The trade-off is cost and a fierce housing squeeze, so plan your budget and your room hunt early.

  • Trinity College Dublin (TCD), the oldest and most famous, right in the city centre
  • University College Dublin (UCD), the largest, on the leafy Belfield campus south of the centre
  • Dublin City University (DCU) and TU Dublin at Grangegorman for a broad spread of options

The pub is the social hub, from traditional-music sessions to student-packed spots around Camden Street and Rathmines rather than touristy Temple Bar. Trinity and UCD run huge societies, from the debating unions to drama and countless niche clubs, and they are the fastest way to make friends. Freshers' Week sets the year up, and there is always a gig or a trad session on.

  • Drink where students do, on Camden Street, in Rathmines and at the Stag's Head, not Temple Bar prices
  • Join societies during Freshers' Week; Trinity's Hist and UCD's L&H are legendary
  • Catch live trad at The Cobblestone in Smithfield or O'Donoghue's

Dublin is one of Europe's pricier student cities, driven by a severe housing shortage, so budget around EUR 1,300 to EUR 1,900 a month, most of it rent. A room in a shared house or digs runs roughly EUR 700 to EUR 1,100, and a Student Leap Card is essential for cheap travel. Cook at home and drink in, as pints are dear.

  • A room costs EUR 700 to 1,100 a month; digs, a room in a family home, can be cheaper
  • Get a Student Leap Card for roughly half-price fares with daily and weekly caps
  • Shop at Lidl, Aldi and Dunnes; Moore Street and the Asian markets for cheap fresh food

Dublin's rental market is the hardest part of the whole exchange, so start the moment you can. Purpose-built student accommodation such as Yugo and Aparto is pricey but reliable, while digs and shared houses go through Daft.ie and Facebook. Never pay a deposit before viewing, in person or by live video, as accommodation scams are rife here.

  • Daft.ie and Rentals.ie for rooms; the college accommodation offices list vetted digs
  • Purpose-built halls like Yugo and Aparto if you want certainty over price
  • Ask the Dublin group on Studcasa early; verified rooms beat cold-messaging strangers
Read the full Dublin housing guide

Dublin runs buses, the Luas tram (red and green lines) and the coastal DART train, all tied together by the Leap Card and the TFI 90-minute fare that lets you transfer across them. A Student Leap Card cuts fares sharply and caps daily and weekly spend. The centre is small enough to walk, and Dublinbikes cover short hops.

  • Tap on and off with a Student Leap Card; the TFI 90-minute fare covers transfers
  • The DART hugs the coast to Howth, Dun Laoghaire and Bray, a scenic and useful line
  • Dublinbikes for quick city-centre trips; the bus network is the workhorse

The academic year runs two semesters, roughly September to December and January to May, with a strong reputation across Trinity, UCD and DCU. Teaching mixes lectures with tutorials and continuous assessment, and you address staff informally. Freshers' Week and orientation at the start of each term are when you sort modules and join societies.

EU, EEA and Swiss students need no visa and can simply enrol and register locally if staying long term. Non-EU students should check whether their nationality needs an entry visa before travelling, as it varies; many do not for short stays but some always do. Whatever your passport, confirm the rules with your host university and Irish immigration early.

Any non-EU student staying more than 90 days must register with immigration and get an Irish Residence Permit card, booking an appointment through the ISD registration system and paying a fee. Bring proof of enrolment, funds and private health insurance. UK citizens travel and study freely under the Common Travel Area.

  • EU/EEA/Swiss, no visa; register if staying long term
  • Non-EU, check if you need an entry visa for your nationality
  • Staying 90+ days, register for an IRP card via ISD
  • UK citizens, no visa under the Common Travel Area

Dublin's food scene has come a long way, with a serious coffee-and-brunch culture and cuisines from all over layered onto the classics. The pub remains central, not just for pints but for the trad sessions and the chat. Literature is everywhere too, from Joyce's Dublin to the Book of Kells at Trinity.

  • Try a proper full Irish breakfast, and coddle or Irish stew in an old pub
  • Grab lunch at George's Street Arcade or the Temple Bar Food Market on Saturday
  • See the Book of Kells and the Long Room at Trinity, then walk it off along the Liffey

The south-city villages of Rathmines, Ranelagh and Portobello are the classic student belt, lively and walkable to town. Stoneybatter and Phibsborough on the north side are hip and a bit cheaper, Drumcondra suits DCU, and Ballsbridge and Donnybrook sit near UCD. Coastal Dun Laoghaire trades a commute for sea air.

  • Rathmines and Portobello, the student heartland, walkable to the centre
  • Stoneybatter and Phibsborough, cooler and cheaper on the north side
  • Drumcondra for DCU, Ballsbridge for UCD if you want to be near campus

Dublin's coast and mountains are on the doorstep, and the rest of Ireland is a bus or train away. The DART reaches the fishing village of Howth and the Bray-to-Greystones cliff walk in half an hour, while Glendalough's monastic valley sits in the Wicklow Mountains just south. Galway, Cork and Belfast are all easy weekend trips.

  • Howth by DART (30 min) for the cliff loop and seafood; Bray to Greystones for the cliff walk
  • Glendalough and the Wicklow Mountains, about an hour south by bus
  • Galway or Belfast in around 2.5 hours by train for a weekend away

Sort your Student Leap Card and start the housing hunt before anything else, as both save you real money and stress. Dublin weather is mild but wet and changeable, so a decent rain jacket beats an umbrella in the wind. Pace yourself in the pub; rounds add up fast at Dublin prices, and nobody expects you to keep up.

  • Get the Student Leap Card in week one for half-price, capped travel
  • Carry a waterproof, not an umbrella; the wind will destroy it
  • Budget hard for rent and buy an under-26 rail card for cheaper intercity trips

To be honest, Dublin is a nice city and calm, people are welcoming. But if had to pick something else, I’ll try to have Singapore .

In Dublin, it's so easy to avoid trying the bars and even the nightclubs. In September, when I first arrived, I remember going to a club every night, Monday through Saturday, for the first few weeks. There are a lot of French people in Dublin, so if you want to practice your English, it's not the ideal place. There are three French business schools, for example. As for nightclubs, I went to Deceys. It's an open-air club, and they have a DJ on Fridays. For cheap beer, go to Disndat, it's near Dublin Business School. And for really cheap beer, go to Silver Penny. If you want to learn English while meeting people from all over the world, go to Soho Club. As a French person, in Deceys you'll meet French people and there are French songs. The DBS student association organizes many events, so don't be afraid if you want to make friends.

Best trips to do?

If you're in Dublin, traveling isn't easy because trains and planes are expensive. You can easily get stuck on the islands. I traveled once, to Galway. I couldn't just fly to another country like that because it was too expensive. My friends in Asia, on the other hand, flew easily and visited many Asian countries.

What do you absolutely need to know to live your best life in Dublin?

Without a student transport card, (leap card) going out will cost you a lot. 2 euros in cash for each trip... otherwise, Dublin isn't all that attractive; there isn't that much to do. …

Take a rain coat lmao

Would you recommend it?

Prices are relatively cheaper and as you are living with a family, the house is generally well equipped. It is very risky however as some students have gotten scammed and even asked to move out randomly on short notice. Personally, I would choose another place closer to the university (if you cannot get the student accommodations) but I would recommend starting to search for housing on this website as early as May. However, this option is for those who have a lower budget. Go for other websites if you have a higher budget.

🍻 Social Life

What are some top bars, clubs, or events you recommend?

As I lived far, I did not have a good social life.

🎓 Uni life at University College Dublin (UCD)

Which classes do you recommend… or not?

Discovering Ireland: Landscapes It is a module with no classes and you get to go on two field trips which allow you to discover and explore unique Irish historical landmarks that you would not otherwise visit. The assignment is a learning journal reflecting what you saw and learned during the trips. This module is mostly taken by exchange students.

Do you have some tips?

The campus is big and you get the campus life, equipped with big libraries and bunch of cafes.

✈️ Travel

Best trips to do?

Belfast, Cliffs of Moher, Edinburgh

🌆 Dublin vibe

What do you absolutely need to know to live your best life in Dublin?

Transport can be very annoying as bus delays often and cancels without prior notice. Sometimes there are cases where the bus doesn’t show up despite saying it will.

💡 Other Tips

Look at the housing prices beforehand and stay as close to the university as possible. The commute will take a mental toll on you.

Would you recommend it?

I was renting a room in a family house with two children (2 and 4 years old). The owners were really nice and kind, and the room was spacious, well equipped and bright. I had a private restroom and access to the bathroom and the kitchen. The location was perfect for me because my university was at 10min walk and it has a shopping center at 15min walk! The only few flaws were the price of the rental that was pretty expensive for a student (1000€/month) and the children who were often noisy. Apart from that, I liked my accommodation and I recommend it!

🍻 Social Life

What are some top bars, clubs, or events you recommend?

The nightlife in Dublin is amazing!! People are always friendly and nice. With my friends, our favorite club was the Lost Lane, the music is great (especially in the razzmatazz parties), and we also liked the Dtwo for its French themed parties. The district of Temple bar is perfect for hanging out with friends in a irish vibe. It’s important to note that the most of clubs and bars close early compared to France (2am)

🎓 Uni life at Dublin City University

Which classes do you recommend… or not?

Introduction to Marketing : requires a lot of personal work, one mandatory reading + question every weeks… Psychology in Organisations : Interesting and easy course, only a multiple choice questions + a written report (case study) to validate the semester Distribution & Channel Management : I recommend this course Operations Management : I don’t recommend this course, too much personal work, you will need to write 4 reports + film a video « reflective learning portfolio » to validate the semester… Development Economics : I recommend this course even if the personal work was pretty intense, it was interesting and well structured. Employee Relations Procedures : I recommend this course, pretty easy and interesting

Do you have some tips?

Yes the campus is very cool, it has a nice sport complex (gym club, olympic pool, spa, football field…), some restaurants and even a pharmacy and a mini market! The university is used to international student, so the registration is easy and there is a lot of international students in class with you. There is also a lot of clubs & socs (chess, trampoline, sports, dance, maths, cheerleading…), and often various events on the campus with a good vibe!

🌆 Dublin vibe

What do you absolutely need to know to live your best life in Dublin?

What you absolutely need to know is that the cost of living is quite similar to France, so you won’t experience a major shock when it comes to prices for groceries or going out. The city is very safe overall, with a friendly and welcoming atmosphere, though (as in any big city) it’s always a good idea to stay alert late at night. The weather in Dublin also tends to get an unfair reputation. It’s not as rainy or grey as people often imagine. In fact, during my stay, it was even better than in France! You’ll quickly get used to the changing skies and learn to always keep a light jacket or umbrella handy. When it comes to getting around, the Leap Card is an absolute must. It’s a rechargeable travel card that lets you hop on buses, trams (Luas), and trains within Dublin. Once validated, it allows unlimited travel for 90 minutes. Even better, students benefit from heavily discounted fares, paying roughly half the regular price, which makes public transport both easy and affordable.
