Rome is the Eternal City, layer upon layer of history, huge universities and a nightlife spread across ancient piazzas. It is chaotic, beautiful and endlessly rewarding, if pricier and more hectic than smaller Italian cities.

Partners & Perks

Verified housing partners and student perks in Rome: no blind deposits, no ghost landlords. Grab one before someone in your group does.

We’re still lining up verified partners in Rome. In the meantime, ask the Rome group for the housing leads students are using right now.

Studying in Rome means living inside an open-air museum, with the Colosseum, the Vatican and 3,000 years of history as your backdrop. It hosts Sapienza, Europe's largest university, plus Roma Tre, LUISS and John Cabot, so the student population is vast and international. Life is busier and dearer than elsewhere in Italy, but the sheer richness of the city is unmatched.

  • Naples is an hour and Florence about 90 minutes by high-speed train.
  • Sapienza alone has over 100,000 students, so the international scene is huge.

Nightlife spreads across San Lorenzo (the gritty student quarter by Sapienza), buzzing Trastevere, hip Pigneto and the bars of Monti and Testaccio. Roman evenings start late with an aperitivo in a piazza and drift on for hours. It is a sprawling, varied scene with something for every budget and taste.

  • Drink cheaply with students in San Lorenzo near Sapienza, then move on to Pigneto.
  • Do aperitivo and bar-hop through Trastevere's lanes at night.
  • Ask the Rome group on Studcasa which neighbourhoods suit your nights out.

Rome is one of Italy's pricier cities, though below Milan, budget towards the upper Italian band, driven mainly by rent. Eating and drinking can still be cheap if you follow students to the right areas. Living further out along a metro or tram line is the big saving.

  • Eat pizza al taglio and suppli on the go for a couple of euros between lectures.
  • Share a flat in San Lorenzo, Pigneto or the outer zones to keep rent manageable.
  • Get a Metrebus student pass to travel unlimited across the city cheaply.

The rental market is competitive and pricey, so start early and view before paying. Students favour San Lorenzo (by Sapienza), Pigneto, Ostiense and San Giovanni, plus cheaper suburbs on the metro. Facebook groups, Idealista and agencies are the main routes, and scams are common.

  • Search on Idealista and Facebook groups, and post in the Studcasa Rome group for rooms and warnings.
  • San Lorenzo suits Sapienza students; Pigneto and Ostiense are hip and a bit cheaper.
  • Never pay a deposit before viewing; student housing scams are widespread in Rome.
Read the full Rome housing guide

Rome's ATAC network has three metro lines, trams and a dense bus system, though the metro is limited by the ruins beneath the city. A Metrebus student pass covers it all, and much of the centre is best on foot. Traffic is heavy, so avoid crossing town by road at rush hour.

  • Buy a Metrebus student season ticket for unlimited metro, tram and bus travel.
  • Walk the historic centre, the metro barely reaches it, but the sights are close together.
  • Use trams and buses for areas the metro misses, and allow extra time in traffic.

Rome's universities are enormous: Sapienza is the largest in Europe and strong across almost every field, Roma Tre and Tor Vergata are major public options, and LUISS is the top private business school. English-taught programmes and international students abound, along with American institutions like John Cabot.

  • Sapienza's main campus (Citta Universitaria) sits by San Lorenzo; other faculties are scattered.
  • ESN and Erasmus buddy schemes are large and active, join early to find your feet.

If you are an EU or EEA citizen you need nothing beyond registering your residence if you stay past 90 days. Non-EU students almost always need a national type D study visa arranged through the Italian consulate before arrival, plus proof of enrolment, funds and health insurance. Exactly what you need depends on your nationality, so check with your consulate early.

Once in Italy, non-EU students must apply for a permesso di soggiorno, the residence permit, within eight days of arrival, using a post office kit and a police questura appointment. It is slow and paperwork-heavy, so bring photocopies of everything and expect queues. Your university's international office will usually walk you through it.

  • EU/EEA, no visa; register if staying 90+ days
  • Non-EU, type D study visa from your consulate
  • After arrival, permesso di soggiorno within 8 days

Roman food is bold and simple: cacio e pepe, carbonara, amatriciana and gricia, plus suppli, pizza al taglio, artichokes (carciofi alla romana e alla giudia) and maritozzi cream buns. Trastevere and Testaccio are the classic eating quarters. Meals are social and unrushed, and coffee is a standing ritual.

  • Order the Roman pasta quartet, cacio e pepe, carbonara, amatriciana and gricia.
  • Snack on suppli and pizza al taglio, and try carciofi alla giudia in the old Jewish Ghetto.
  • Eat in Testaccio and Trastevere trattorie where Romans, not tourists, queue.

Trastevere is the picture-postcard nightlife quarter; San Lorenzo is the edgy student area by Sapienza; Monti is central and boutique; and Testaccio is the foodie, working-class heart. Pigneto is the hip, arty district, while Prati near the Vatican is smart and calmer. The centro storico is beautiful but expensive.

  • San Lorenzo: cheap, gritty and student-central by Sapienza.
  • Trastevere: pretty and lively, but pricier and touristy.
  • Pigneto and Ostiense: hip, cheaper and well connected by tram.

Rome's rail hub makes escapes easy. Naples is an hour and Florence 90 minutes by high-speed train, while Tivoli's villas, Ostia Antica's ruins and the Castelli Romani wine towns are short local trips. Orvieto, Assisi and the coast at Sperlonga round out the weekend options.

  • Take the high-speed train to Naples or Florence for a day or weekend away.
  • Visit Tivoli's Villa d'Este and Hadrian's Villa, or the ruins of Ostia Antica, by local train.
  • Escape to the Castelli Romani hill towns for wine and a slower pace.

Give yourself time, Rome is huge, hot in summer and slowed by bureaucracy, so patience pays. Sort housing early and watch for rental scams, keep an eye on your belongings on crowded buses like the 64, and carry water in summer using the free nasoni fountains. Wear comfortable shoes; you will walk a lot.

  • Refill from the nasoni street fountains rather than buying water in the summer heat.
  • Guard your phone and wallet on tourist buses and around Termini station.
  • Start the flat hunt early and never transfer deposits before viewing in person.

What kind of place was it?

Coliving / Shared House

How much was the rent per month?

1050

Where was it located?

piazza regina Margherita

Would you recommend it?

I stayed in an appartment with 7 students in total. The location of the appartment was amazing, but the rent was a bit high. The appartment had some issues, but my roommates were amazing and they made my exchange unforgettable.

🍻 Social Life

What are some top bars, clubs, or events you recommend?

The social life is amazing in Rome. There are a lot of places where you can go out. In Rome it doesn't matter what day of the week it is, because there is always a club open where you can go out.

🎓 Uni life at LUISS

Which classes do you recommend… or not?

I recommend the class Financial Markets & Institutions, because you have two midterms with multiple-choice questions and if you pass both you do not have to do the final exam. Mathematical Finance is a pretty though course even if you're pretty good in math.

Do you have some tips?

The campus of LUISS is stunning from the outside and there is an amazing park where you can hangout during breaks. The registration was easy and there was a lot of support from LUISS' side. If I could pick my university again I would definitely choose LUISS again.

✈️ Travel

Best trips to do?

In Rome there is an organization called ESN that organizes big trips to cities in Italy, but also to different countries. Besides those trips they organize activities as going to a wine festival which was unforgettable.

🌆 Rome vibe

What do you absolutely need to know to live your best life in Rome?

The rent in Rome is pretty high. The food is obviously amazing cause you're in Italy. Rome is a very safe city. Transportation costs is basically free, because I never bought bus or tram tickets and I never got checked.

💡 Other Tips

Enjoy your time abroad, because it will be over before you know it

yes it was nice to leave there i loved it thanks to my roommates but the housing on itself is really old, lot of problems with fournitures, water, the cold for examples, moreover our receptionists did not talk english at all. Otherwise this little problems, sharing a room with someone is actually is not as bad as i thought it was really fun, we had once a week cleaning ladies and the garden in the residence is big and welcoming. I don’t know if i had the opportunity if i would have taken the same place again but i had a great time there.

🍻 Social Life

What are some top bars, clubs, or events you recommend?

lot of parties organise by esn, a welcoming week and support between erasmus students

🎓 Uni life at luiss guido carli

Which classes do you recommend… or not?

i recommend to take graduate classes are they seem more specific than the undergraduate ones but read carefully the overview of the class

Do you have some tips?

i would pick the same uni again it’s a beautiful uni with lots of service and security the only point is that it’s complicated to travel between the two campus so try to focus your classes only in one of them

✈️ Travel

Best trips to do?

Visits all Italie, milan, florence, naples… but i do not recommend bari if its to stay actually there it should be a city where you sleep and then go visit another one. Otherwise all the other cities are so great to visits, the planes are cheap and there is a possibility to take the bus and trains and for non european, france, slovenia are countries that you can easily travel too while in rome.

🌆 Rome vibe

What do you absolutely need to know to live your best life in Rome?

Transport is not reliable, they might come or not who knows ? not them apparently ! the city is beautiful so many things to see, go at the fontana du trevi at night for the best pictures, lots of club and bars

💡 Other Tips

Live your erasmus as fully as possible, say yes, discover, travel, party, one of the best time of your life !

Would you recommend it?

The first few weeks were very stressful because the Italian university did not give us much information on how to fill out anything or sort out our timetables but once that was sorted it has been great!

🍻 Social Life

What are some top bars, clubs, or events you recommend?

Couple of good pubs, like the Nags Head, but very different style of clubbing, lots of Italian and Spanish music and very little English

🎓 Uni life at LUMSA

Which classes do you recommend… or not?

EU law is good, easy to follow with the powerpoints made, Contemporary and International Politics is interesting but you really have to pay attention as there are no slides it is just the lecturer talking

Do you have some tips?

✈️ Travel

Best trips to do?

My friends and I went to Napoli for the day and I also planned an impromptu trip to Bratislava! Very easy to travel from here

Trieste

Would you recommend it?

My place was very close to my university. I recommend to live in Trieste or Parioli. They are both very close about 20min so very cool. Living in a colliding was my first experience of independence and my roommates aren't really clean, plus the appartement has a lot of problems

🍻 Social Life

What are some top bars, clubs, or events you recommend?

CUT every Tuesday night (commercial song), Jolie club and Piper club. Satyrus is cool but house music all night long.

🎓 Uni life at LUISS

Which classes do you recommend… or not?

Depends, I choose them regarding the schedule to avoid overlaps. I take classes that I already had in my home university so at the end it is easier to work for the exam

Do you have some tips?

The campus is great, the registration was easy. The worst part is choosing the classes and at the same time avoid overlaps.

✈️ Travel

From Rome you can go everywhere. There is the train station named Termini and you can go to the north, south... I went to Salerno, Napoli and Firenze and the maximum train hours was 3.

Transports are messy, use moovit application to help you + buy your monthly transport card (35€) on mooneygo. They don't really like tourists and don't do effort to understand English. Don't go to restaurants where waiter are waiting at the front of the restaurant. Except these, Rome is really great.

Looking for an accommodation made me feel really anxious, but at the end I was able to find a shared apartment. So far the experience is going so great. I would recommend to look for an accommodation the earlier possible.

🍻 Social Life

What are some top bars, clubs, or events you recommend?

I didn't go to many events yet, but of you ever come to Rome, here's what I would recommend: Bella Donna (restaurant close to Trevi Fountain and piazza della Spagna) Ombre Rosse (bar/ restaurant with a really chill vibe with cheap menu and excellent wine ;)) Emporio Brasiliero (close to Termini station, it is the best Brazilian food i ever had) And lastly, (even though it's not always specifically in Rome) Fervo Fluxo have the best baile funk dj mix, I really had the best time

🎓 Uni life at Università degli Studi Roma Tre

Which classes do you recommend… or not?

I would recommend Linguistica Italiana contemporanea only if you love linguistic and if you already have some base in it, otherwise it might be complicated for you

Do you have some tips?

My campus (lingue letterature e culture straniere) was okay. You will have to be patient and ready to spend a good amount of time looking for your answers because the administration won't be so much helpful. But I feel like Roma Tre, especially (because it's my pov) for those who study languages is a cool university, with a good variety of classes. But don't expect to be bestie with italian people because they just don't care about you 😬

✈️ Travel

Best trips to do?

I didn't have any yet.

🌆 Rome vibe

What do you absolutely need to know to live your best life in Rome?

So for me, transports were actually decent. Before coming i heard people say busses are the worst they never come... but for me it's really not that bad (i guess I'm used to worst haha), you just have to be well informed. So I would recommend "probus Roma" because the timing is accurate. You also have to know that strikes are pretty common here (basically every friday). As a black person, in my experience (emphasis on my) i didn't feel any kind of racism (not more that i would usually). For me and for now, Rome has been pretty safe. I feel like Rome is cheaper than Paris in terms of groceries and life in general (you just have, with the time find the good places). Food, as you can imagine, is amazing. Weather in Rome is actually warmer than what I'm used to, so you can forget your big fat sweater, you won't need it here.

💡 Other Tips

Just enjoy, at your own scale and pace. If you're not a party animal, just don't go to so many events. Your experience doesn't have to look like everyone else. If you're just a chill person, go do chill things that will make YOU happy. I swear you will have a great experience because it will be yours, it will be the one you made for you and not for others.
