Guadalajara is Mexico's proud second city, the birthplace of mariachi and tequila, with a huge student population, a walkable historic core and a cost of living well below the capital.

Partners & Perks

Verified housing partners and student perks in Guadalajara: no blind deposits, no ghost landlords. Grab one before someone in your group does.

Jalisco's capital is the heartland of Mexican tradition, as mariachi, tequila and charreria all come from here, yet it is also a fast-growing tech hub with a young, creative energy. The Universidad de Guadalajara anchors a massive student scene, the Colonia Americana was named one of the world's coolest neighbourhoods, and it is cheaper and less overwhelming than Mexico City.

  • The birthplace of mariachi and tequila, with Jalisco's traditions all around you
  • Colonia Americana was named the world's coolest neighbourhood by Time Out in 2022
  • A major tech hub, sometimes called Mexico's Silicon Valley, with a big student population

Nightlife centres on Avenida Chapultepec and the surrounding Colonia Americana, where bars, taquerias and live music spill onto the street, especially at the Wednesday Chapu market nights. The Universidad de Guadalajara's campuses keep the city young, and cantinas offer cheap beer with free botanas (snacks). It is sociable, affordable and easy to plug into.

  • Bar-hop Avenida Chapultepec and Colonia Americana for the liveliest nights
  • Drink at a traditional cantina where beer comes with free botanas
  • Catch mariachi at the Plaza de los Mariachis or a Tlaquepaque courtyard

Guadalajara is comfortably affordable, so around 500 to 800 euros (roughly 9,500 to 15,000 pesos) a month covers a shared flat, food and transport, below Mexico City prices. Street tacos and market lunches cost a couple of euros, and the transport card is cheap. Colonia Americana and Providencia carry a premium, while outer colonias are far kinder on the wallet.

  • A torta ahogada or a few street tacos costs 30 to 60 pesos (1.50 to 3 euros)
  • A comida corrida (set lunch) at a market runs about 80 to 120 pesos
  • Rooms in trendy Colonia Americana cost more, while outer colonias are cheaper

Most exchange students share a flat or take a room in Colonia Americana, Providencia or near their campus. Facebook groups like Cuartos y Departamentos Guadalajara and the app Inmuebles24 are the main tools, and student residences cluster near the CUCEA and CUCEI campuses. Verify listings and avoid paying deposits before you view.

  • Search the Roomies and Cuartos Guadalajara Facebook groups and Inmuebles24
  • Colonia Americana and Providencia are central and social but pricier
  • Ask the Studcasa Guadalajara group to check an area's safety and commute first

SITEUR runs the Tren Ligero (three light-rail lines) and the Mi Macro bus-rapid-transit corridors, all paid with the rechargeable Mi Movilidad card. MiBici, the public bike share, is excellent for the central colonias, and Uber and DiDi are cheap and widely used. The historic centre and Americana are very walkable.

  • Get a Mi Movilidad card for the Tren Ligero and the Mi Macro BRT lines
  • Use MiBici bike share to get around Colonia Americana and the centre
  • Uber and DiDi are cheap and safer than street taxis late at night

The Universidad de Guadalajara (UdeG) is Mexico's second-largest public university, spread across thematic campuses: CUCEA for business and economics, CUCEI for engineering and sciences, and CUCSH for humanities. The private ITESO (Jesuit) and the Tec de Monterrey campus are strong too. UdeG runs a large exchange programme, mostly taught in Spanish.

  • UdeG's campuses are themed, from CUCEA (business) to CUCEI (engineering) and CUCSH (humanities)
  • Solid Spanish helps, though ITESO and Tec de Monterrey offer some English-taught courses

What you need depends on your nationality and how long you're staying, so treat this as a starting point and confirm with the Mexican consulate for your country. Many nationalities, including most Europeans, can enter visa-free as tourists for up to 180 days, which covers a single semester. For a full academic year or formal enrolment, you'll usually apply for a temporary resident student visa at a consulate before you travel.

Start early, since consulate appointments and document legalisation take time.

  • Short exchange under 180 days, often visa-free entry for many nationalities
  • Full year or formal enrolment, temporary resident student visa from a consulate
  • Bring your university acceptance letter and proof of funds to the appointment
  • Requirements vary by nationality; always confirm with your Mexican consulate

Guadalajara's signatures are the torta ahogada, a pork sandwich drowned in spicy tomato sauce, and birria, the rich goat or beef stew now famous worldwide. Wash them down with tejuino, a fermented-corn drink, and finish with jericalla, the local custard. The huge Mercado San Juan de Dios is the place to graze.

  • Try a torta ahogada from a street stand, with the sauce as spicy as you dare
  • Eat birria for weekend breakfast, the Tapatio way
  • Graze the food stalls at Mercado San Juan de Dios (also called Mercado Libertad)

Colonia Americana is the hip, walkable heart of cafes, bars and Porfirian mansions, while Providencia and Chapalita are leafier and upmarket. The Centro Historico holds the cathedral and markets, and Tlaquepaque and Tonala, technically separate towns, are artisan quarters famous for crafts. Zapopan to the north has the malls and newer developments.

  • Colonia Americana: coolest, most central and most walkable for students
  • Providencia or Chapalita: leafy, upmarket and quieter
  • Tlaquepaque: artsy, full of craft shops and lively courtyard restaurants

Weekends write themselves here. The town of Tequila and its agave fields are an hour away, reachable on the Tequila Express or Jose Cuervo Express train, Lake Chapala and Ajijic an hour south, and the beaches of Puerto Vallarta about three and a half hours by bus. The pueblos magicos of Tapalpa and Mazamitla add cool mountain escapes.

  • Tequila town and the agave fields: about 1 hour, or take the tequila train
  • Lake Chapala and Ajijic: roughly 1 hour south
  • Puerto Vallarta's Pacific beaches: about 3.5 hours by ETN bus

Locals call themselves tapatios, so learn the word and you will earn a smile. Use Uber or DiDi rather than street taxis at night, carry cash for markets and street food, and pace yourself with the tequila (and try a mezcal or raicilla too). Afternoon rains hit hard in the summer wet season, so pack a small umbrella.

  • Use Uber or DiDi after dark instead of hailing street taxis
  • Carry pesos in cash for tianguis markets and taco stands
  • Ask the Studcasa Guadalajara group for the best-value neighbourhoods and day trips

First Chapultepec then Terranova

Would you recommend it?

Yes however be ready to be pushed out of your comfort zone if you come from Europe if you don’t like that CDMX is better

🍻 Social Life

What are some top bars, clubs, or events you recommend?

I was part of connexion that was good to meet people but there was definitely a certain type of people who would hang out together I wish my uni did more events so chose your uni wisely personally I travelled more than going to bars or clubs my favorite was la Lupita

🎓 Uni life at EBC

Which classes do you recommend… or not?

If you choose LANCE you do nothing maybe don’t take finance lol but the standards are not the same as Belgium so super easy

Do you have some tips?

Campus was nice facilities wise I would say meeting people was more tricky since everybody knew each other and I was the only one on exchange also got info quite late and sometimes had to remind them but overall they were there for me when I had trouble with homesickness

✈️ Travel

Best trips to do?

Go to CDMX, Baja California, Oaxaca

🌆 the city vibe

What do you absolutely need to know to live your best life in the city?

Transport is horrible safety is better than what people think it would be although take Uber at night obviously food not as inexpensive as you might think you have to go to Tianguis and eat street food There’s always events in Guadalajara just be prepared for it to be different people are quite nice not all but they are helpful

💡 Other Tips

Before booking a house do a video call or better look on the spot cause there’s too many scam Do your research and ask students from previous year You will feel homesick but you’ll create your circle of friends and live wonderful adventures together

How much was the rent per month?

Where was it located?

Chapalita Oriente

Would you recommend it?

I recommend a lot this type of housing to discover and meet people from around the world. Being a lot in the house is not a proplem for this type of experience. If you are here to work and have a quite house during all the semester.... I don't recommend a lot. Keep in mind that is randomly selected by many foreigners, so you can have a house with only frensh roommates or spanish roommates which can be mad depending if you want to meet people from another countries. In my case, I was with many french people which bring me a lot in term of a group atmosphere and simplified travel organisation for hollidays (roadtrip for exemple). Maybe, my exchange would be different if I had been with other people from different nationalities. My advice : make research on that, but there no wrong choice I think. In term of accomodations, facilities and place where I lived, Chapalita Oriente is really chill and safe for exchange people (foreigners) and I was pretty surprised about security feeling in the neighboorhood.

🍻 Social Life

What are some top bars, clubs, or events you recommend?

Bar Americas : check the instagram account, there is some techno events in Guadalajara (Nico Moreno), Hilo (previously Strana), Panic room, Sauna, Kanna...

🎓 Uni life at Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey

Which classes do you recommend… or not?

Be carreful I talked about courses at ITESM Guadalajara. Anticorruption in government, firms and society is a really interesting course wich really fit with an exchange experience in Mexico. Corruption is a phenomenon embedded in all the society and interesting to understand what is it and why it is so present. Courses not too demanding in terms of workload and schedule : Mexican culture and idendity Asynchronous business courses : Intercultural Leadership, Management and Communication Megatrends for the Future

Do you have some tips?

Registration easy and tutors are really helpfull. The campus is really cool with a lot of sport facilities : football field, soccer fields, volley-ball fields (beach and indoor), swimming-pool, gym etc

✈️ Travel

Best trips to do?

Not planned in 10 minutes but i really recommend to go to Puerto Escondido : beach, surf, chill atmosphere. You can rent a scooter to move wich bring incredible vibes to your tripe for sure. Club are insane with the same freedom feeling inside. Go to the OLA restaurant : not costly and really good for local specialities.

🌆 Guadalajara vibe

What do you absolutely need to know to live your best life in Guadalajara?

Transport : by uber it's easier in the most of small travels but buses function really good as well, I really advise you to dowload movit to see all buses line that move into Guadalajara. Cost of living : 3/4 of France cost of living theorytically but for example do your shopping is the same as in France whereas eat out evening fit with the theory. Safety : As I said at the beggining, I didn't feel any insecurity if you don't provoke anything weather : I was there for the rainy season and then the milder season, and the temperature was perfect after a month of slightly annoying showers, but honestly, nothing too bad. The temperature from September to December is simply incredible: just the right amount of coolness in the evenings, and if you want warm beach weather, you have plenty of options: Sayulita, Puerto Escondido, Puerto Vallarta, the beaches of the Yucatan (Carmen, Cancun...) and many more... Perhaps the only downside to Guadalajara: you can see everything very quickly, unlike Mexico City, and you sometimes feel a bit confined (it's a dense and populated city). Give yourself the opportunity to travel.
