  • The University of Manchester, Manchester Metropolitan, Salford and the RNCM are the hosts.
  • Terms run late September to June.

Since Brexit, EU citizens no longer have free movement, so most non-Irish students need permission to study. For an exchange of up to six months you can often come under the Short-term study route or simply as a Standard Visitor, depending on your nationality and course length. For a full year you will need a Student visa sponsored by your host university.

What applies depends entirely on your passport, so confirm with the university and official UK government guidance early. The Student visa needs a CAS reference from your uni, proof of funds and usually the immigration health surcharge, so budget both time and money for it.

  • Exchange under 6 months, often Standard Visitor or Short-term study
  • Full year, Student visa with a CAS from your uni
  • Irish citizens, no visa needed under the Common Travel Area
  • Budget for the immigration health surcharge on longer visas

Manchester's food scene runs from the Curry Mile to buzzing food halls, and its museums are free. Music and football are woven into daily life.

  • Rusholme's Curry Mile and Chinatown are food institutions.
  • Mackie Mayor and Altrincham Market are buzzing food halls.
  • Free museums include the Science and Industry Museum and Manchester Art Gallery.

The city runs from the student terraces south to the creative centre and leafy suburbs. Each area has a distinct pace and price.

  • Fallowfield and Withington for student life.
  • The Northern Quarter and Ancoats for bars, brunch and creativity.
  • Chorlton and Didsbury for a calmer, greener base.

The Peak District is on the doorstep, and other northern cities are close by train. The Lakes and Snowdonia make bigger weekends easy.

  • The Peak District (Edale, Castleton) is about 45 minutes by train.
  • Liverpool and Leeds are both about 50-60 minutes.
  • The Lake District, Chester and Snowdonia are all easy weekends.

Housing in Fallowfield moves fast, so sort it early. Pack for rain and pick your football allegiance with care.

  • Sort a house early, as the Fallowfield market moves fast by autumn.
  • Bring a proper raincoat; Manchester's reputation for rain is earned.
  • Choose a football allegiance carefully, as the city is fiercely divided.

🏠 Housing

What kind of place was it?

Student Residence

How much was the rent per month?

1300

Where was it located?

In Salford, 35 min away from the university but not a lot of accommodation offers an only 3 months rent.

Would you recommend it?

The place has good potential if you’re staying with friends, but when you’re alone it’s not very fun and it’s pretty far from everything.

🍻 Social Life

What are some top bars, clubs, or events you recommend?

You have to try a party at the Warehouse Project (WHP), it is the biggest club in Manchester (also a depot). If you want to chill and grab a beer with, Wetherspoons pubs are the cheapest ones. But be careful, they are really open to drugs consomption.

🎓 Uni life at University of Manchester (AMBS)

Which classes do you recommend… or not?

Great if you do not want to study anything. Only 3 different courses and class presence is not mandatory.

Do you have some tips?

Kind hard to communicate with the school, everything is slow. As the class is affordable, I recommend you to get friends so you won't be alone in theatres.

✈️ Travel

Best trips to do?

Liverpool with a 40 min long train and London in 2 hours. Or, France in only one hour of flight !!

🌆 Manchester vibe

What do you absolutely need to know to live your best life in Manchester?

Buses are omnipresent in the city, that is kind cool. It is always raining so bring your coat.

🏠 Housing

What kind of place was it?

Classic Apartment

How much was the rent per month?

Around 600£

Where was it located?

Fallowfield

Would you recommend it?

I recommend the place if you’re only staying for a semester, since it’s the best option available considering that MMU doesn’t help students who are staying here for less then a year and all the private accommodations are really expensive. It’s a decent apartment, but it’s far from university (around 40 min if you walk) and the city center

🍻 Social Life

What are some top bars, clubs, or events you recommend?

Deansgate for clubs, northern quarter for drinks

🎓 Uni life at MMU

Which classes do you recommend… or not?

I recommend international business strategy

Do you have some tips?

Good campus

✈️ Travel

Best trips to do?

London, Edinburgh, York and lake district

🌆 Manchester vibe

What do you absolutely need to know to live your best life in Manchester?

It’s expensive, clubs close at 3, if you don’t live close to the center buy a bus pass as soon as you arrive
