Partners & Perks

Verified housing partners and student perks in Glasgow: no blind deposits, no ghost landlords. Grab one before someone in your group does.

You get a massive, sociable student scene in a city famous for its warmth and its music, at prices below Edinburgh. It is also the quickest gateway to the Highlands, so weekends outdoors are easy.

  • Glasgow University, Strathclyde and Caledonian give it a huge student population.
  • It is a UNESCO City of Music, with live venues on every corner.
  • It is noticeably cheaper than Edinburgh and famously friendly.

The West End around Byres Road is the student heartland, packed with pubs, cafes and Ashton Lane. The live-music scene is world-class, from tiny venues to the legendary Barrowland.

  • The West End around Byres Road and Ashton Lane is the student core.
  • King Tut's Wah Wah Hut and the Barrowland Ballroom are must-visit live venues.
  • The Studcasa Glasgow group is great for gig-goers and flat-hunters.

Glasgow offers real value for a major UK city, with cheaper rent than Edinburgh and famously good-value food. The Subway and curry houses stretch a budget nicely.

  • Budget around GBP 850-1,350 a month, good value for a major city.
  • A Subway smartcard makes short hops cheap, and student season tickets save more.
  • The Barras market and the curry houses do brilliant cheap eats.

The West End is the classic student area near Glasgow Uni, while the Southside and Dennistoun are cheaper and up-and-coming. Where you live often follows your university.

  • The West End (Hillhead, Partick) is the classic student area near Glasgow Uni.
  • The Southside (Shawlands) and Dennistoun are cheaper and rising.
  • The city centre suits Strathclyde and Caledonian students.

The circular Subway loops the centre and West End, backed by the UK's largest suburban rail network outside London. Buses fill in the rest.

  • The Subway, the circular Clockwork Orange, loops the city centre and West End.
  • ScotRail's suburban trains and First Bus cover everywhere else.
  • Central and Queen Street stations link the rest of Scotland.

Glasgow has a strong spread of universities and a big international community. The academic year follows the Scottish semester pattern.

  • The University of Glasgow, Strathclyde, Glasgow Caledonian and the Glasgow School of Art are the hosts.
  • Semesters run September-December and January-May.

Since Brexit, EU citizens no longer have free movement, so most non-Irish students need permission to study. For an exchange of up to six months you can often come under the Short-term study route or simply as a Standard Visitor, depending on your nationality and course length. For a full year you will need a Student visa sponsored by your host university.

What applies depends entirely on your passport, so confirm with the university and official UK government guidance early. The Student visa needs a CAS reference from your uni, proof of funds and usually the immigration health surcharge, so budget both time and money for it.

  • Exchange under 6 months, often Standard Visitor or Short-term study
  • Full year, Student visa with a CAS from your uni
  • Irish citizens, no visa needed under the Common Travel Area
  • Budget for the immigration health surcharge on longer visas

Glasgow takes its food and its culture seriously, from a famous curry scene to free world-class museums. Everyday treats are cheap and hearty.

  • Glasgow claims the chicken tikka masala, and its curry scene lives up to it.
  • Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum is free and unmissable.
  • Try a roll and square sausage and a Tunnock's teacake.

The West End, city centre and Southside each have distinct characters and price points. Finnieston has become the foodie favourite.

  • The West End for students, cafes and the Botanic Gardens.
  • Finnieston for the best food and bars.
  • Merchant City and the Southside for a mix of nightlife and value.

Glasgow is the fastest jumping-off point for the Highlands and islands, with Edinburgh close too. Some of the train journeys are attractions in themselves.

  • Loch Lomond is about 45 minutes, the quickest taste of the Highlands.
  • Edinburgh is about 50 minutes by train.
  • The West Highland Line to Fort William and Mallaig is one of the world's great rail journeys.

The accent takes a little tuning but the welcome is genuine. Bring waterproofs and be mindful of football rivalries.

  • Give the Glaswegian accent time; it is warm once it clicks.
  • Carry a hood rather than an umbrella, which the wind will destroy.
  • Be careful which football colours you wear on derby day.

How much was the rent per month?

1000£

Where was it located?

Merchant City, 30mins from campus by subway

Would you recommend it?

Yes because the building is very modern with everything you need (your own bathroom, well equiped shared kitchen). However, if you can get the university accomodation go for it. It make the experience 10x more fun.

🍻 Social Life

What are some top bars, clubs, or events you recommend?

There are so many pubs in Glasgow. I would recommend Hillhead Book Club (on thursdays for karaoke nights), Kitty O Sheas (for the live music), and Vodka Wodka for the student vibes.

🎓 Uni life at University of Glasgow

Which classes do you recommend… or not?

Just choose what you're interested in and everything should go well.

Do you have some tips?

The campus is big but the main building is stunning. There are loads of study spaces. Yes I would pick the same uni again.

✈️ Travel

Best trips to do?

From Glasgow you can visit many cities like Stirling or Edinburgh by taking the train (less that 20£ for a day trip). There are also many parks like Pollock Park where you can see highland cows. There are also many hikes around Glasgow that are accessible by bus.

🌆 Glasgow vibe

What do you absolutely need to know to live your best life in Glasgow?

The transports are easy to use but they don't run during the night, so after a night out you will have to walk are take a taxi. The west end and city center are safe to walk in late at night but if you have to cross the city it can be dangereous (like every big city). It rains a lot and there are a lot of puddles so bring boots.

💡 Other Tips

Go to the association/sport club fair at the start of the semester and join a club !! I joined the ski club as a competitive member and it's how I met all my friends. Sport wednesdays go crazy too

🏠 Housing

What kind of place was it?

Student Residence

How much was the rent per month?

Around 600/month

Where was it located?

Right next to the uni and 10min (not even) from the city centre and 5min from the main bus station

Would you recommend it?

Yes ! You’ll have flatmates so you need to be okay with sharing kitchen, bathroom and shower but you’ll have your own bedroom and sink. Also I think it is crucial to encounter people. I know some who prefered having their own apartment etc but they struggled to meet other internationnal students. Also it is next to everything in the city so really usefull. i really liked the experience and created cool friendships !

🍻 Social Life

What are some top bars, clubs, or events you recommend?

Loads of clubs and pubs open everyday (more in the end of the week but still) My tops are Club - The Buff, Manuka Bars / pubs - Felson (chill, pool etc), Malone’s

🎓 Uni life at Glasgow Caledonian University

Which classes do you recommend… or not?

You have plenty of classes to choose between. I would recommend having a funnier one (betwsen marketing theories I had sport and media)

Do you have some tips?

Amazing campus with big library where to work etc. Registration super easy. The uni sends a lot of emails so you’re not on your own. Also there is an assignement help department to help you in preparing exams or essays etc. Would recommend going

✈️ Travel

Best trips to do?

Isle of skye, Harry Potter train, Edinburgh (1h15-30 from glasgow, max 10pounds by bus). Would recommend taking the train and explore cities even if it is less famous. Went on tours with some companies cause without a car (under 25 it is expensive) it is complicated.

🌆 Glasgow vibe

What do you absolutely need to know to live your best life in Glasgow?

You’ll walk a lot but it is a nice city and think about going out with something for the rain, in 5min it can go from sunny to rainy ahah

💡 Other Tips

In the GCU residence for student, there’s a social space (working, pool, ping pong, cinema room) very cool to change from working in the library, bedroom, kitchen or coffee shop. And really cool to spend time with friends without having to go out

How much was the rent per month?

Where was it located?

Paisley

Would you recommend it?

Yes, it was a pleasant experience. The student residence is located next to the campus and there are many activities offered to meet other students. The classes were interesting and the teachers are friendly. Paisley is a beautiful, quiet town close to Glasgow. I recommend it !

🍻 Social Life

What are some top bars, clubs, or events you recommend?

There are a few bars and nightclubs in Paisley, but the town is rather quiet in the evenings. It is recommended to go out in Glasgow, which is livelier and easily accessible by public transport.

🎓 Uni life at University of the West of Scotland

Which classes do you recommend… or not?

There are a lot of courses and possibilities. I really enjoyed Marketing and leadership courses.

Do you have some tips?

The Paisley campus is great: it's big but easy to get to and it's easy to find your way around. There are lots of people and students available to help you. There's a large library, a cafeteria, and a gym available. It's a very nice campus. There are lots of different communities, which is great for meeting people from different cultures.

✈️ Travel

Best trips to do?

Paisley has a good range of transport options (train, bus, plane), and the town is a 10-minute train ride from Glasgow. However, traveling in Scotland is relatively expensive. Major cities are well-connected, but if you want to travel within the country, it's recommended to have a car (given that renting a car in Scotland is complicated and expensive). Therefore, you'll need to plan ahead to book trains and budget for your travels.

🌆 Glasgow vibe

What do you absolutely need to know to live your best life in Glasgow?

Paisley is a very quiet and relatively safe town. Glasgow, like all big cities, is dynamic and lively. Some places are to be avoided, but the majority of people are friendly. The Scots are a little cold at first, but remain very welcoming.

💡 Other Tips

I recommend purchasing a train pass, which will save you a lot of money on travel, or renting a car if possible. It's important to book your trips well in advance to avoid excessively high prices. I recommend traveling to the north of Scotland, hiking, and visiting castles. Finally, I recommend seeing Edinburgh over several days because it's a very rich city with many things to see and museums to visit.

The Wetherspoons are crazy, the Irish Pubs too. You have to start very early your nights cause everyone is in his bed at 2 or 3 am so I am able to recommend only bars

🎓 Uni life at University of the west scotland

None

Do you have some tips?

The campus is not very cool, I didn't find any formations about the come to school but the teachers are OK. Not at all

good to discover the British islands, amazing to go Hiking and discover the highlands and lowlands but except that its not easy to take the planed go see the sun in southern Europe

The weather was terrible for me but he people have the sun in their hearts, as the saying tells us "People make Glasgow". So everyone is nice plus if you are French you will be loved by everyone so don't hesitate to meet someScottish lads and they will propose you rapidly some activities with them !

💡 Other Tips

The electricity has to be paid by cards you buy at the post Office, so it's not like in France when you pay at the end of the month what you consumed. Except that go discover the lakes, campaign and Higlands of Scotland, go there, sleep there and be close to the nature which is incredible there :).
