City Overview

The Ankara TL;DR

Your money goes ridiculously far and the hospitality is unreal — endless çay, huge campus scenes, and a city spanning two continents. The Erasmus networks in Istanbul and Izmir are massive.

Ankara is Turkey's calm, orderly capital, less flashy than Istanbul, but home to top universities, a big student scene and unbeatable value. It is a practical, friendly base with the whole country a train or bus ride away.

Partners & Perks

Verified housing partners and student perks in Ankara: no blind deposits, no ghost landlords. Grab one before someone in your group does.

We’re still lining up verified partners in Ankara. In the meantime, ask the Ankara group for the housing leads students are using right now.

As the capital, Ankara offers top universities like METU and Bilkent, a large student population and a noticeably lower cost of living than Istanbul. It is greener, calmer and easier to navigate, with a modern metro and Turkey's high-speed rail hub for exploring the country. You trade Istanbul's drama for affordability, space and a strong academic scene.

  • High-speed trains reach Istanbul in about four hours and Konya in around 1.5.
  • Living costs are among the lowest of any European capital.

Student life buzzes around Kizilay, the central square packed with cafes and bookshops, and Bahcelievler's 7th Street, a strip of student bars near METU. Tunali Hilmi is the go-to for cafes and shopping. It is a big, young, budget-friendly scene fuelled by endless cay (tea) and late-night eats.

  • Meet friends over cay and cheap eats around Kizilay square.
  • Hit the student bars of 7th Street in Bahcelievler near METU.
  • Ask the Ankara group on Studcasa where the best-value student nights are.

Ankara is extremely affordable, sitting comfortably at the lower end of the Turkish band, cheaper than Istanbul on rent, food and transport. A student can live well on very little, especially eating at university canteens and lokantas. Currency swings mean lira prices shift, so budgeting in euros keeps things steady.

  • Fill up on kuru fasulye (beans and rice) or a doner for the price of a coffee back home.
  • Share a flat in Bahcelievler or Cankaya to keep rent near the band's floor.
  • Load a Baskentkart transit card for cheap metro and bus travel.

Students rent flats in Kizilay, Cankaya, Bahcelievler and Cebeci, or use university dormitories (yurt), which are cheap and common in Turkey. Sharing an apartment near a metro station is popular. Facebook groups, sahibinden.com and agents are the usual channels.

  • Search sahibinden.com and Facebook groups, and post in the Studcasa Ankara group for rooms.
  • Bahcelievler and Cankaya are central and student-friendly; Bilkent has its own campus housing.
  • Consider a state or private yurt (dorm) for the cheapest, most social first-term option.

Ankara has a growing metro (lines M1 to M4 plus the Ankaray) and extensive EGO buses, all paid with a Baskentkart card, plus dolmus shared minibuses for local routes. The high-speed train (YHT) station links you to Istanbul and Konya. The city is spread out, so the metro is your workhorse.

  • Get a Baskentkart and top it up for cheap metro, Ankaray and bus rides.
  • Use dolmus minibuses for routes the metro misses, pay the driver in cash.
  • Take the YHT high-speed train from Ankara Gar for fast trips to Istanbul and Konya.

Ankara is Turkey's academic heavyweight: the Middle East Technical University (METU, or ODTU) and Bilkent are among the country's best, teaching largely in English, alongside Hacettepe, Ankara University and Gazi. METU's huge forested campus is a city in itself. English-taught programmes and international offices make exchanges straightforward.

  • METU and Bilkent teach in English and sit on large self-contained campuses.
  • Choose housing near your university's metro stop, as campuses are far apart.

What you need depends on your nationality and how long you stay, so treat this as a guide and confirm with the Turkish consulate for your country. Many nationalities can enter visa-free or with a simple e-visa as a tourist for up to 90 days, which can cover a short exchange. For a full semester or year of formal study, you'll usually need a student visa arranged before travel, then a residence permit obtained after arrival.

Registering for the residence permit (ikamet) once you're in the country is the step students most often leave too late.

  • Short stay under 90 days, often visa-free or a simple e-visa for many nationalities
  • Full semester or year, apply for a student visa at a consulate before you travel
  • After arrival, register for a residence permit (ikamet); do not delay this
  • Requirements vary by nationality; always confirm with your Turkish consulate

Ankara's food is hearty central-Anatolian: Ankara tava (rice and lamb), doner, Iskender, testi kebabi and simit bread rings, with kuru fasulye a student staple. Tea and Turkish coffee are constant, and nearby Beypazari is known for its dried-fruit sweets. Hospitality is central, expect to be plied with cay.

  • Try Ankara tava and a testi (pottery) kebab in a traditional lokanta.
  • Grab a simit and cay for a cheap breakfast on the go.
  • Sample kuru fasulye with rice and pickles, the classic budget meal.

Kizilay is the central hub, full of students, cafes and transport links; Cankaya is the upmarket embassy district; and Bahcelievler is student-heavy near METU. Tunali Hilmi and Kavaklidere are cafe and shopping quarters, while historic Ulus around the citadel is the old city. Bilkent is a self-contained university town to the west.

  • Kizilay: central, student-filled and superbly connected.
  • Bahcelievler: student bars and flats near METU.
  • Cankaya and Tunali Hilmi: upmarket, cafe-rich and pleasant to live in.

Ankara's central position and fast trains make it a great base. Cappadocia's fairy chimneys are around 4.5 hours by bus or a short flight, Konya and its whirling-dervish heritage 1.5 hours by high-speed train, and the student town of Eskisehir 1.5 hours away. Ottoman Safranbolu and the salt flats of Lake Tuz make striking day trips.

  • Take an overnight bus or short flight to Cappadocia for balloons and cave towns.
  • Ride the YHT to Konya or the canal-lined student city of Eskisehir.
  • Visit UNESCO-listed Safranbolu's Ottoman houses or the vast Lake Tuz salt flat.

Ankara is more low-key than Istanbul, so its social life is about student haunts and cay rather than big landmarks, settle in and it grows on you. Learn some Turkish, as English is less widespread than at the universities, and budget in euros given the volatile lira. Use the excellent high-speed trains to see the rest of the country cheaply.

  • Pick up basic Turkish; it goes a long way outside campus.
  • Keep cash on you for dolmus, markets and small lokantas.
  • Book YHT high-speed train tickets ahead for cheap weekends away.
