Bangkok is a hot, frenetic, endlessly rewarding megacity, a place of gold temples and glass towers where street food is a religion, the Skytrain glides over the gridlock, and your money stretches further than almost anywhere.

Partners & Perks

Verified housing partners and student perks in Bangkok: no blind deposits, no ghost landlords. Grab one before someone in your group does.

We’re still lining up verified partners in Bangkok. In the meantime, ask the Bangkok group for the housing leads students are using right now.

Bangkok is the wild, warm-hearted capital that hooks most people who come to study here: chaotic but weirdly easy to live in, incredibly cheap, and packed with world-class universities and a huge international student crowd. Street food on every corner, rooftop bars, ancient temples and island weekends make daily life feel like an adventure. It is the gateway to South-East Asia, with the whole region a cheap flight away.

  • Chulalongkorn and Thammasat, Thailand's top universities, sit right in the city centre.
  • Cheap flights from two airports put Thailand's beaches and all of South-East Asia within reach.

Nightlife spans everything from the backpacker chaos of Khao San Road to the polished rooftop bars of Silom and Sathorn and the trendy clubs of Thonglor and Ekkamai. Students gather over street food and cheap drinks as much as in clubs, night markets like Jodd Fairs double as social hubs, and the international scene is enormous and easy to join. It rarely cools down and the city rarely sleeps.

  • Thonglor and Ekkamai on the Sukhumvit line hold the trendiest student-friendly bars and clubs.
  • Graze and hang out at the Jodd Fairs night market rather than only hitting bars.
  • Ask the Bangkok Studcasa group which areas and nights are best and how to get home safely.

Bangkok is a bargain: 550 to 850 euros a month buys a comfortable student life, though the trendy expat neighbourhoods can push it higher. A room or studio runs from a few thousand baht upwards, street meals cost 50-80 baht, and the Skytrain and boats are cheap. Air-conditioning and Western restaurants are where your budget quietly disappears.

  • A room or small studio starts around 6,000-12,000 baht a month depending on area, pool and gym.
  • Eat street food for 50-80 baht a dish, pad kaphrao and khao man gai are staples.
  • Buy a Rabbit card for the BTS Skytrain and use Grab for cheap door-to-door rides.

Most students rent a room or a small condo, often in buildings with a pool and gym that feel luxurious for the price; proximity to a BTS or MRT station matters far more than the neighbourhood name. Facebook groups, agents and word of mouth are the main channels, and short leases are negotiable. Prioritise being on the Skytrain line near your campus, because Bangkok traffic will otherwise eat your life.

  • Rent within walking distance of a BTS or MRT station, it transforms daily life.
  • Condo rooms with pool and gym are affordable; search Facebook housing groups and local agents.
  • The Bangkok Studcasa group is a good place to find rooms and vet buildings before you sign.
Read the full Bangkok housing guide

Escape the legendary traffic by living on the rail network: the BTS Skytrain and MRT subway are clean, cheap and air-conditioned, and the Chao Phraya Express boats and canal boats are a quick, scenic way through the old town. Grab is cheap and reliable for door-to-door trips and safer than haggling with tuk-tuks. Motorbike taxis, the orange-vested 'win' riders, blitz short hops through jammed streets.

  • Live near the BTS or MRT and use a Rabbit card; the Skytrain beats road traffic every time.
  • Use Grab for metered, cashless rides instead of negotiating with taxis or tuk-tuks.
  • Take the Chao Phraya Express boat to reach the Grand Palace and old-town temples.

Chulalongkorn University is Thailand's most prestigious, centrally located by Siam, and Thammasat, with its historic riverside campus and larger Rangsit campus, is its great rival, both major exchange hosts with strong international programmes. Mahidol's international college, Kasetsart and Assumption (ABAC) add more English-taught options. Many programmes run entirely in English, so you can study without Thai, though a few phrases go a long way socially.

  • Chulalongkorn and Thammasat run extensive international, English-taught programmes.
  • Mahidol University International College at Salaya is another popular English-language option.

For a full semester you need the Non-Immigrant ED (education) visa, and yes, it all depends on your nationality, so check your nearest Thai embassy first. Your Thai university sends an admission and visa-support letter; you apply before you fly (a single-entry ED visa costs roughly €60-80 and gives you 90 days), then extend it at a local immigration office to cover your whole stay.

The paperwork does not stop at arrival. You must do 90-day reporting (telling immigration where you live every 90 days), your landlord or uni files a TM.30 address notification, and you keep your student-status letters current. Get a re-entry permit before any weekend trip abroad or your visa dies at the border. And never work on an ED visa, it is not allowed.

  • Visa type, Non-Immigrant ED (single-entry ~€60-80)
  • Key document, university admission/visa-support letter
  • After arrival: 90-day reporting + TM.30 address filing
  • Leaving the country, get a re-entry permit first

Street food is Bangkok's greatest pleasure and among the best on the planet: pad kaphrao and khao man gai for lunch, fiery som tam and tom yum, boat noodles, and mango sticky rice to finish. Yaowarat (Chinatown) turns into a food carnival at night, Chatuchak weekend market is a vast maze of shopping and snacks, and temples like Wat Pho and Wat Arun anchor the culture. Learn the wai greeting and dress modestly at temples.

  • Eat at Yaowarat (Chinatown) after dark for the city's best street-food crawl.
  • Spend a Saturday at Chatuchak (the JJ market), thousands of stalls of food and shopping.
  • Cover shoulders and knees for temples like Wat Pho and Wat Arun, and return a wai politely.

Sukhumvit is the long, BTS-served spine of expat and student life, with hip Thonglor and Ekkamai and, off to the north, leafy café-filled Ari; Silom and Sathorn are the business-and-nightlife core. Siam is the central shopping heart near Chulalongkorn, while Banglamphu and the old town around Khao San hold the temples, the river and cheaper, more traditional living. Choose your area by the campus and the rail line.

  • Sukhumvit (Asok to Ekkamai): central, BTS-connected and full of students and expats.
  • Ari: quieter, hip and café-heavy, popular with young professionals and students.
  • Banglamphu and the old town: cheaper and near Thammasat, temples and the river, but off the BTS.

Bangkok is South-East Asia's travel hub. The ancient ruins of Ayutthaya are a 90-minute train ride, Kanchanaburi with its River Kwai and waterfalls two to three hours, and beaches at Hua Hin and Pattaya an easy weekend. Khao Yai national park and the Amphawa floating market are close for nature, and dirt-cheap flights from Don Mueang reach Chiang Mai, the islands, and neighbours like Vietnam and Cambodia.

  • Day-trip to Ayutthaya (about 90 minutes by train) for temple ruins and giant Buddhas.
  • Weekend in Kanchanaburi for the River Kwai, the Erawan waterfalls and jungle.
  • Fly cheap from Don Mueang (AirAsia, Nok Air) to Chiang Mai, Phuket or neighbouring countries.

Live near the Skytrain and use Grab, and you will beat the traffic that defines the city; always carry a light layer, because the malls and trains are fiercely air-conditioned. Respect Thai customs, never disrespect images of the King or the Buddha, dress modestly at temples, and keep your cool, as losing face publicly goes down badly. Stay hydrated and pace yourself in the heat.

  • Base yourself on the BTS or MRT and use Grab to sidestep Bangkok's notorious gridlock.
  • Dress modestly at temples and never disrespect the monarchy or Buddha images, it is taken seriously.
  • Carry a light jacket for over-air-conditioned trains and malls, and drink plenty of water.

Coliving / Shared House

How much was the rent per month?

Where was it located?

In Chong Nonsi, at 20 minutes from Chula university

Would you recommend it?

Yes, I’d recommend it. The biggest positives were the mood with almost all exchange students there, great location, and good facilities (gym/pool) which made daily life easy during the exchange. The only downsides were Bangkok traffic and warm humidity.

🍻 Social Life

What are some top bars, clubs, or events you recommend?

Khao San Road, Soi Cowboy (ping pong shows, striptease), Pastel (for Thursday evenings), Apartment 101, Levels,... Try to find promoters to have free entry and alcohol in clubs.

🎓 Uni life at chulalongkorn university

Which classes do you recommend… or not?

You can change your courses until one month after the beginning of the semester. However, I recommend get your place in the classes before because some are full fast. Some teachers make the attendance but it's rare.

Do you have some tips?

The campus is amazing, huge, like American campuses. Registration could be little bit tricky so make it before arriving, especially for Student Visa. Chulalongkorn University is the best of the country but most of classes are still very easy.

✈️ Travel

Best trips to do?

You can take any plane you want from Bangkok for cheap, so I recommend travel : In Thailand : Khao Sok, Kho Phi Phi,... Abroad : Vietnam, Indonesia (Bali), China, Laos, Cambodge, Philippines.

🌆 Bangkok vibe

What do you absolutely need to know to live your best life in Bangkok?

7-Eleven is your emergency supply chain. Safety is amazing. You can have trips with accommodations for less than 10€ a night, 20€ the night bus. However, even if everything is really cheap, at the end is can cost a lot if you don't track your expenses.

So at the beginning you can be a little bit lost and feel alone

A lot of space for one person, queen bed, tv, fridge, microwave, bathroom well designed, desk, enough space for everything, washing machine. The residence offers a lot of shared areas: gym, cinema, pools, shared kitchen, darts, billard, ping pong, working areas. Everything is designed for a student life, shuttle buses are free to go to the Main Street. However if I can just have a negative point: there is no cooktop, you cannot cook for yourself but life in Thailand is really cheap so it is not really a problem. Plus, there is no WiFi.

🍻 Social Life

What are some top bars, clubs, or events you recommend?

Blur is a good bar, but only Thai music. A lot of restaurants are near the university, really easy to find

Marketing and business English are quite easy, there are a lot of groups works and not a lot of individual assignments. Really easy to follow, there are no lectures that are complicated

The campus is really huge, you have free shuttle to move from each building, a lot of cafeteria, inside the school you can find a seven eleven, dental clinic, little hospital, many ares to eat and get some rests, a library, computer space The registration is really easy, if you have a problem, a good team is here to help you, they response really fast Yes I recommend this school
