Partners & Perks

Verified housing partners and student perks in Taipei: no blind deposits, no ghost landlords. Grab one before someone in your group does.

Taipei is where East Asia feels easiest to land in: a spotless metro, 24-hour convenience stores, cheap incredible food and some of the friendliest people you will meet. Top universities like NTU and NCCU host big exchange cohorts, and the city sits in a bowl of green mountains with hot springs and hiking trails minutes from the centre. It is safe, endlessly walkable and hard to leave.

  • NTU, NCCU, NTNU and Taiwan Tech all run large exchange programmes with buddy systems
  • The MRT, YouBikes and 24-hour convenience stores make daily life effortless
  • Mountains, hot springs and hiking sit right on the city's edge

Student life centres on the Gongguan district around NTU and the Shida (NTNU) area, both packed with cheap eateries, bars and bubble-tea shops. Nightlife ranges from craft-beer spots and live-music venues to the big clubs in Xinyi near Taipei 101. Language exchanges are a brilliant way in, letting you swap English for Mandarin and make local friends fast.

  • Hang out around Gongguan (NTU) and Shida for cheap food and student bars
  • Join a language exchange, which many universities and cafes run, to meet locals
  • For clubs head to Xinyi; for craft beer and live music try Da'an and Zhongshan

Taipei is affordable by big-city standards, so budget around NT$27,000-38,000 (roughly 800-1,100 euros) a month. Rent is the main cost, with a shared room or small studio running NT$10,000-18,000. Eating out is often cheaper than cooking thanks to night-market meals and cheap lunchboxes (biandang).

  • Eat at night markets and self-serve buffets (zizhucan) for full meals at NT$60-120
  • Load an EasyCard for the MRT, buses, YouBikes and convenience stores
  • Get the TPASS monthly pass (NT$1,200) for unlimited metro and buses

Most exchange students take a university dorm (cheapest and easiest) or rent a room in a shared flat or tao fang studio. Off-campus, look around Gongguan, Da'an and Guting to stay near the action. Rooms are often barely furnished, and agents may charge a half-month fee, so read contracts carefully.

  • Apply for your university dorm early, as they are cheap but fill fast
  • Use 591.com.tw, the main rental site, and search Da'an, Guting and Gongguan
  • Ask the Taipei group on Studcasa for landlord leads and help reading a Mandarin lease
Read the full Taipei housing guide

The Taipei MRT is fast, cheap and immaculate, and one EasyCard covers the metro, buses, YouBike public bikes and even shop purchases. Buy a TPASS for NT$1,200 a month and travel unlimited across Taipei, New Taipei, Keelung and Taoyuan. For short hops, grab a YouBike 2.0 from almost any corner.

  • Get an EasyCard and top it up at any convenience store or MRT machine
  • Buy the NT$1,200 TPASS for unlimited monthly metro and buses
  • Use YouBike 2.0 for the last mile, as docks are everywhere

Taiwan's universities mix lecture-heavy teaching with strong research, and English-taught courses are widening every year. NTU leads across the board, NCCU is known for social sciences and communications, NTNU for education and Chinese-language study, and Taiwan Tech for engineering. Most host a free or cheap Mandarin course you should absolutely take.

  • NTU for almost everything; NCCU for social science; NTNU for Mandarin study
  • Enrol in your university's Mandarin classes, as even basics transform daily life

This depends entirely on your passport, so treat the below as a map, not gospel. Most European, UK, US, Canadian and Australian students get 90 days visa-free on arrival, fine for a short summer thing, not for a full semester. For a proper exchange you apply for a student Resident Visa at your nearest Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) before you fly, using the admission letter your host university sends.

Once you land, you convert that into an ARC (Alien Resident Certificate) at the local immigration office within a couple of weeks, this is your golden ticket for a bank account, phone contract and re-entry. Start early: TECO appointments and document legalisation can eat weeks. Your host uni's international office will hand-hold you through most of it.

  • Short stay: 90 days visa-free for many nationalities
  • Full semester: student Resident Visa via TECO before you fly
  • After arrival: convert to an ARC within about 15 days
  • Exact rules depend on your passport, check your own TECO office

Taipei might be the best street-food city on earth: beef noodle soup, xiaolongbao dumplings, gua bao, fried chicken and the bubble tea that was invented here. Night markets like Shilin, Raohe and Ningxia are dinner and entertainment in one. Convenience stores are a genuine institution, handling coffee, meals, bill payments and parcel pickup around the clock.

  • Work through the night markets: Raohe for pepper buns, Ningxia for classics, Shilin for scale
  • Try Din Tai Fung for xiaolongbao and any street stall for beef noodle soup
  • 7-Eleven and FamilyMart do coffee, hot meals, ATMs and parcel pickup 24/7

Da'an is the leafy, central student-and-cafe district around NTU and Shida; Xinyi is the glossy downtown of Taipei 101 and clubs; Zhongshan and Datong mix old lanes with hip bars; and Wanhua (Ximending) is the youthful shopping-and-cinema quarter. Beitou, to the north, is famous for its hot springs.

  • Da'an and Guting for student life, cafes and easy campus access
  • Ximending (Wanhua) for shopping, cinemas and youth culture
  • Beitou for weekend hot springs a short MRT ride from the centre

Taipei is a fantastic base. Jiufen's lantern-lit lanes and Pingxi's sky lanterns are an hour or so out, Yangmingshan National Park is on the doorstep, and Tamsui sits at the end of the red MRT line. The High Speed Rail whisks you to Taichung, Tainan and Kaohsiung in under two hours for bigger weekends.

  • Take the MRT and a bus to Jiufen and the Pingxi sky-lantern line
  • Hike Yangmingshan or ride the MRT to Tamsui for riverside sunsets
  • Use the HSR (Taipei to Kaohsiung in about 90 min) for weekends down south

A few habits pay off fast: always carry your EasyCard, never eat or drink on the MRT (it is fined), and take your shoes off indoors. Typhoon season in summer and autumn can shut things down, and a typhoon day means no classes. And learn a little Mandarin, as even a few phrases open doors.

  • Do not eat or drink on the MRT, as it is a NT$1,500-7,500 fine
  • Watch the weather in typhoon season, since a typhoon day cancels classes
  • Carry cash for night markets and small stalls, as not everywhere takes cards

What kind of place was it?

Student Residence

How much was the rent per month?

I had to pay everything at the start of the stay, it was 10,070 NTD + 3,000 NTD for deposit which were given back to me at the end of the stay. With the deposit, it was basically more or less € 350 for a whole semester.

Where was it located?

Inside the University campus, in Xinzhuang districs

Would you recommend it?

I recommend it because of its closeness to the various buildings in the campus where you'll have classes. Because of that, I could sleep late most of the times. Plus, if you are lucky, you can make many great friends while you're living there. The major downsides is that the dormitories are mostly really old and the common bathrooms weren't nice. Also, the university campus is kinda far from the city centre so, everytime we wanted to go out it would take us at least 40 mins to 1 hour to get to the well-known hangout places in the city.

🍻 Social Life

What are some top bars, clubs, or events you recommend?

I think the best club to dance was Babylon. It is on a rooftop super close to Taipei 101 so it really sets the mood. Another good place to hangout is Maji Square. There, you can find many different bars and clubs where you can eat, chill with friends, have a chat, and dance. If you'd like to go for a cool bar where you can have drinks and play card games and stuff like that, I recommend going to Another Brick. Plus, it is super international.

🎓 Uni life at Fu Jen Catholic University

Which classes do you recommend… or not?

I highly recommend Cross-Cultural Communication: Global Understanding Project -> really cool, we had two different exchanges online with a Peruvian and an American universities. Super fun and great way to meet new people. I don't recommend much Introduction to Literature I -> we had to do a LOT of projects outside of the usual midterm and final tests. If you don't like theatre and stuff like that I don't recommend it.

Do you have some tips?

The campus was pretty cool, not too big and not too small. I recommend only choosing courses in English and, if you want to improve your Chinese, attend the Free Mandarin Evening Course provided by the university. If you want to get high grades and not fail, you need to have a REALLY good attendance record. The professors were nice and pretty chill most of the time. Registration was easy and the people at the International Student Office were nice and helpful. I'd pick this uni again because I had a good time and the courses were pretty good but, if I had the chance to, I would have liked to attend a uni that's closer to the centre of Taipei.

✈️ Travel

Best trips to do?

There's many things to see around the Island, around the Taipei area too. I highly recommend going to the Yehliu Geopark, to Wulai, to the south and centre of the Island and, if you have the chance, travel outside too. I want on a trip to Thailand that will forever be one of my favourite memories from this exchange program.

🌆 Taipei vibe

What do you absolutely need to know to live your best life in Taipei?

Taipei is mostly really safe. The public transportation works great and the most important areas of the city are all well-connected. If you go out at night, just remember that the metro stops running after midnight so you'll need to call a taxi or an uber.

💡 Other Tips

Just live your best life, it is a once in a lifetime opportunity and you should enjoy it to the fullest :)

I would not live there for my full degree but for a semester it is perfect. It is very well located and the agency is super nice and active in case of any issues. The rooms are small but okay. It is an apartment of 10 students so you can get lucky and become friends with them. I did not really but it was still a very friendly and respectful atmosphere. would recommend to check it out

🍻 Social Life

What are some top bars, clubs, or events you recommend?

social life in Taipei is great !! You can find what you want. maybe bars: check Revolver, Neon bar and Another Brick (the cheapest beer we could find and many students) also many nightclubs but pretty expensive or not really my taste... check the club Rabbit Hole and go to the Formosa Soul club event because they are superrr nice (disco funk parties)

🎓 Uni life at NTU

Which classes do you recommend… or not?

I will not remember NTU for their classes but more for their infrastructures and clubs. Check out their cinema class they are nice

Do you have some tips?

campus is super nice !! Take the time to explore all the different restaurant option (the waffles are SUPER good) as well as study spot. Many places to chill as well with grass and a small pond. I would pick the same uni again for sure

Best trips to do?

The island of Taiwan is great to explore. You can go to the beach, cities as well as in the middle of the mountains. Best trip for me was lambai island !! nothing to do but swim in the middle of turtles and do the tour of the small island with scooters

I think the agency is quite good. My landlord provided us with pillows and duvets, even though this isn't mandatory, and he's really attentive to our needs if there are any problems. The same goes for the agency staff.

🍻 Social Life

What are some top bars, clubs, or events you recommend?

It's really very easy, right in the centre of Taipei, where there's a nightclub called IA. All the foreign students gather in this area, and even the locals are there in large numbers. You'll find everything you need to have a good time.

🎓 Uni life at NCCU

Which classes do you recommend… or not?

I took both master's and bachelor's degree courses. In any case, the level is still a little higher than in France (in economics). The courses are therefore interesting and the professors are really nice. However, there isn't much oral participation required, especially in my master's courses.

Do you have some tips?

The campus is very huge with all we need. Yes registration is easy and obviously keep the same university again. t is also thanks to our coordinator (who is the best).

✈️ Travel

Best trips to do?

Right next to NCCU, there are numerous hiking trails offering breathtaking views of the whole of Taipei.

🌆 Taipei vibe

What do you absolutely need to know to live your best life in Taipei?

n terms of safety, you can't do better than this, with as many restaurants as you want. Unfortunately, the architecture is more beautiful in France or Europe, and I found it to be quite crowded. The weather has been really mild so far (no need for a jumper, even though it's 8 December).

💡 Other Tips

I'm allergic to peanuts, and it's not always labelled, so I got tricked and had to go to A&E. So for those of you with food allergies, always remember to carry your medication with you and always ask the waiters.

🍻 Social Life

What are some top bars, clubs, or events you recommend?

Cool bars are not so close maybe 15 to 20 min of mrt

🎓 Uni life at Fu Jen Catholic University

Which classes do you recommend… or not?

Globally, courses are not really interesting. I had business courses like : human ressources, management, social media marketing… I only like the fact that I just had courses from monday to wednesday.

Do you have some tips?

The campus is cool, very big with a lot of trees. But it is quite far from my appartement (50min with mrt) because it is in New Taipei and not in Taipei. Registration was quite easy because i had a buddy (a local student who help international students). I think choosing a university which in Taipei is a better idea but if you don’t have the choice it is still okay to go to FJUC cause you only have course during 3 days.
