The Vasteras TL;DR

Partners & Perks

Malardalen University (MDU) gives Vasteras a solid, practical academic base, strong in engineering, IT and business, while the city itself sits on Lake Malaren with beaches, marinas and even a summer hotel island. Stockholm is only about an hour away by train, so you get lower costs and a calmer pace without losing the capital. It is an easy, liveable place to spend a semester.

  • Malardalen University (MDU) is strong in engineering, IT and business, with English-taught courses
  • Stockholm is about an hour away by direct train
  • Lake Malaren gives you beaches, marinas and summer swimming

MDU's student union (Malardalens studentkar) runs the welcome activities, sittningar and pub nights, and the scene is friendly and manageable in size. The compact centre holds the bars and cafes, and summer shifts life to the lakeside at Logarangen beach and the Ostra Hamnen waterfront. It is easy to find your crowd quickly here.

  • Join Malardalens studentkar events and welcome week to settle in fast
  • Nightlife centres on the compact city centre around Stora torget
  • Summers move to Logarangen beach and the lake marinas

Vasteras is cheaper than Stockholm while staying close to it, so budget around 8,500-11,000 SEK (roughly 750-950 euros) a month. Student rooms via Bostyra and Mimer are reasonable, and cooking plus weekday lunch deals keep spending down. Living here and visiting Stockholm beats paying capital rents.

  • Rent from Bostyra or Mimer for affordable student housing
  • Use weekday dagens lunch deals to eat out cheaply
  • Buy alcohol only at Systembolaget; union events are the budget night out

Student housing comes mainly through Bostyra and the municipal landlord Mimer, plus the university's help placing exchange students, so accept your offer early. Areas like Vallby, Backby and the central districts hold most student rooms. Do not transfer deposits for flats you have not seen.

  • Apply via Bostyra and Mimer and take the university offer quickly
  • Vallby and Backby are common student-housing areas; central rooms cost more
  • Ask the Vasteras group on Studcasa for sublet leads and area advice

Vasteras is flat and bike-friendly, and the centre is walkable. City buses run on VL (Vastmanlands Lokaltrafik); use the app for tickets and a monthly pass if needed. The station puts Stockholm within about an hour by direct SJ or Malartag train.

  • Cycle or walk in the centre, as it is flat and compact
  • Use the VL app for city buses
  • Direct trains reach Stockholm in about an hour

Malardalen University focuses on engineering, robotics, IT, business and health, with close industry ties (ABB and others are based in Vasteras) and English-taught courses. Teaching is applied and project-based, with plenty of group work. Staff are approachable and informal.

  • Engineering, robotics and IT are strengths, backed by local industry like ABB
  • Expect applied, project-led courses and continuous assessment

It depends on your nationality. EU, EEA, and Swiss students need no visa or residence permit and have full right to study and stay. Non-EU students staying over 90 days need a residence permit for studies from the Swedish Migration Agency (Migrationsverket), applied for online before arrival, with proof of admission, funds, and comprehensive health insurance.

Apply as early as possible, as processing can take weeks or months in peak season. You'll also want to sort a Swedish personal number (personnummer) if you're staying a full year, as it unlocks banking, healthcare, and many services, though shorter stays can get by with a coordination number instead. Keep digital copies of everything.

  • EU/EEA/Swiss, no visa or permit needed
  • Non-EU over 90 days, study residence permit via Migrationsverket
  • Apply online early; peak-season processing is slow
  • A personnummer unlocks banking and healthcare for year-long stays

Fika anchors the day, the lakeside shapes summer life, and the compact centre has enough cafes and restaurants to keep you fed between union dinners. The Saturday market and the nearby Vallby open-air museum add local flavour. Alcohol comes from Systembolaget.

  • Take fika breaks in the cafes around Stora torget
  • Swim at Logarangen and picnic by Lake Malaren in summer
  • Sweden is cashless, so carry a card

The centre around Stora torget and the cathedral holds the shops, cafes and nightlife, with the university nearby. Vallby and Backby to the west are big residential-and-student areas, while the Ostra Hamnen (Eastern Harbour) is a newer waterfront district by the lake.

  • The centre for walkable access to campus and nightlife
  • Vallby and Backby for affordable student housing
  • Ostra Hamnen for newer lakeside flats

Stockholm in about an hour makes big nights out and flights from Arlanda easy. Closer to home, Lake Malaren's islands, the Anundshog Viking burial site and the summer hotel island of Ostra Holmen are quick escapes, and Uppsala is a straightforward trip too.

  • Day-trip to Stockholm (about 1h) whenever you want the capital
  • See the Anundshog Viking mounds just outside the city
  • Take the summer ferry to Ostra Holmen for swimming and picnics

Use Vasteras as a low-cost base and let the train do the work for Stockholm weekends. Get a bike, embrace the lake in summer, and prepare for dark winters. Mind Systembolaget's opening hours as always.

  • Buy a used bike for getting around town
  • Book Stockholm train tickets early for the best fares
  • Stock up at Systembolaget before the weekend

🏠 Housing

What kind of place was it?

Airbnb

How much was the rent per month?

2500 for 4 (560€ for one person)

Where was it located?

In Rabi, at 15 minutes from the center of vasteras

Would you recommend it?

It is cool to have privacy, ur own bedroom, sharing the house with some friends but the distance from the center and from Stockholm (1h30h) is boring sometimes.

🍻 Social Life

What are some top bars, clubs, or events you recommend?

O’learys, best of the best

🎓 Uni life at Mälardalens

Which classes do you recommend… or not?

I did 2 courses, and it was not the best experience but not bad (there are some courses at 15 credits and others at 7.5 …). U will not study much in this exchange, trust me.

Do you have some tips?

The campus is not incredible, you have to register to some things during the month of August, so be aware of it. The university is cool with great people (that you meet for projects), but the level is not incredible and the university neither (but not bad at all !).

✈️ Travel

Best trips to do?

We are a 1h30 of Stockholm airport, so that we took a lot of plane to go to Denmark, Austria, Slovaquia, Latvia, Estonia, lettonia, Finland, Lapland and Sweden and Norway by car with a little road trip. U are on the Nordic center of Europe which is a really good place to travel from.

🌆 Vasteras vibe

What do you absolutely need to know to live your best life in Vasteras?

As everywhere in Sweden, you will have only 5 hours of sun some days, so be ready of this. Then, the city is not moving a lot during the week, it’s just on week ends where people around 20 go out in O’learys Friday night and Saturday night. Majority is 18 there but 20 to buy alcohol. U can just buy a monthly plan for the bus in vasteras, and go everywhere easily. And you have the vasteras station that gives a lot of opportunities of train to go everywhere around Sweden

💡 Other Tips

In the fall semester, it is not THAT cold there, but still cold (without snow until December). Life there is pretty expensive for transport, eating, alcohol, nightlife, it disappear really fast. For less than 20e, you can go in Stockholm and come back in a day.

🏠 Housing

What kind of place was it?

Student Residence

How much was the rent per month?

Around 500€/month

Where was it located?

In Gunnilbogatan 2 (Park Studentbostader), 15 minutes by bus from the center, bars, and nightclubs and 25 minutes from the university.

Would you recommend it?

It was perfect! Brand-new apartments in a large residence for international students with a great atmosphere, a small gym and a sauna available by reservation, as well as free washing machines (also by reservation) and a convenience store on the ground floor of the building. At first glance, the building seems a bit far from the city center, but there’s a direct bus, and there’s a forest right nearby for running or other activities.

🍻 Social Life

What are some top bars, clubs, or events you recommend?

The two best bars: Lion Bar and O'Learys, with activities (bowling, billiards, karaoke, etc.) The one and only nightclub: the Publik every Friday and Saturday (free before midnight) Sports with the school several evenings a week (a different sport depending on the day (basketball, football, badminton) with free bowling after Wednesday evening sports. Football stadium to watch matches and ice rinks with ice hockey matches. The ice rinks are open to the public but you must bring your own equipment. There are also several sports centres, some of which are open 24 hours a day. /!\ Alcohol is only sold (to those over 20) in state-owned shops, which are not always open and close early, especially on Saturdays (Systembolaget). In bars, alcohol consumption is permitted from the age of 18.

🎓 Uni life at Mälardalens universitet

Which classes do you recommend… or not?

I don't necessarily have any courses to recommend, as I mainly chose based on the days of the week so that I could have long weekends. I took: Main Macroeconomics, Basics of Microeconomics, Labour Economics, and Organisation and Management.

Do you have some tips?

The campus is great, the university is large and modern with large lecture halls, a large library, and a restaurant/cafeteria with many activities, trips, sports, etc. I simply registered for courses through my school in France, with the option to change them if I didn't like them.

✈️ Travel

Best trips to do?

I was able to go on several trips and it was incredible. I went to Stockholm a lot on weekends and I love that city, there is so much to see. Then I went to Norway (Lillehammer and Oslo) by train from Västerås, then Finland (Helsinki and Turku) twice, and Estonia (Tallinn) for a day trip from Helsinki by ferry. I fell in love with Tallinn, which is really worth a visit! I also visited Swedish Lapland by night train from Stockholm (including Lulea and Gammelstad). And in Sweden, I went to Gothenburg, further south. Things I didn't do but would have liked to include the Lofoten Islands, Denmark with Copenhagen, which is accessible by Flixbus, the fjords in Norway (e.g. Geiranger) and Bergen. Otherwise, there are many lakes around Västerås that you can reach on foot or by train, offering plenty of opportunities for walks and swimming.

🌆 Vasteras vibe

What do you absolutely need to know to live your best life in Vasteras?

See the category: bars, clubs, activities. Lion Bar, O'Learys, Publik, sports with MDU (the school), sports halls, football and especially ice hockey matches, pre-parties at Park (Gunnilbogatan 2) for those who live in the residence, saunas, Lake Vasteras and the volleyball courts right next to it, walks in the forest next to Park or on the island of Björnö.

💡 Other Tips

There are lots of foreigners, Italians, Spaniards, French, Dutch, and the Swedes are nice. I loved my semester in Västerås, but partly because I made a lot of friends there, which is important, especially in winter when it gets dark at 3 p.m. and the weather isn't necessarily nice every day. Bring board games or things to keep you busy during this rather long period. And don't forget your vitamin D, warm clothes and your swimsuit for the lakes and saunas ;)
