The Stockholm TL;DR

Sweden runs on student life — nation parties in Uppsala and Lund, fika breaks between lectures, saunas, lake swims and northern lights trips. English everywhere makes settling in stupidly easy.

Spread across fourteen islands, Stockholm pairs Nordic design and world-class universities with long summer nights and a laid-back student culture that revolves around fika and the archipelago.

Partners & Perks

Verified housing partners and student perks in Stockholm: no blind deposits, no ghost landlords. Grab one before someone in your group does.

We’re still lining up verified partners in Stockholm. In the meantime, ask the Stockholm group for the housing leads students are using right now.

Stockholm hands you a rare mix: a genuinely international student scene, English spoken everywhere, and campuses like KTH and Stockholm University that plug straight into Sweden's start-up and research world. The city is compact, clean and walkable, wrapped in water you can swim in by summer. It is pricey, but the trade-off is safety, efficiency and a semester surrounded by nature.

  • KTH and Stockholm University both run big exchange intakes with buddy programmes, so sign up the moment you are nominated
  • Nearly everything runs in English, letting you settle in before your Swedish gets going
  • Summer daylight stretches past 10pm, but pack for dark, cosy winters too

Student life clusters around the union houses, THS at KTH and the SU student union, which run sittningar (structured dinner parties with singing), pub nights and welcome weeks. Sodermalm is the epicentre for going out, with everything from dive bars to clubs around Medborgarplatsen. Expect earlier nights too, as many head home before the metro thins out around 3am.

  • Book into a sittning through your union for the classic Swedish dinner with songbooks and schnapps
  • Nightlife hubs are Medborgarplatsen and the bars along Gotgatan on Soder, plus pricier Stureplan
  • Spend summer nights at Grona Lund amusement park or an outdoor swim at Smedsuddsbadet

Stockholm is the priciest city in this guide, so budget roughly 10,000-14,000 SEK (about 900-1,300 euros) a month once you add student housing, an SL pass and eating out. Rent is the big line item, with a student room running 4,500-7,000 SEK. You will save a lot by cooking, buying the weekday dagens lunch deal, and using a Mecenat or Studentkortet card for discounts.

  • Buy alcohol only at Systembolaget, the state shops, which close Sundays and early on Saturdays
  • Eat your main meal at lunch: a dagens lunch is 100-130 SEK versus double that at dinner
  • Get the Mecenat or Studentkortet app for student discounts on transit, food and shops

Housing is the hard part, as Stockholm has a notorious shortage, so lock in a room before you arrive. SSSB is the main student housing foundation, but exchange students are usually placed through their host university's housing office, such as KTH Accommodation or SU Housing. Never pay a deposit for a flat you have not seen, as second-hand (andrahand) scams are common.

  • Apply through your university housing office the day you are nominated, as SSSB queues take years
  • Check Blocket Bostad and the Facebook group Bostad Stockholm, but verify landlords carefully
  • Ask the Stockholm group on Studcasa for current sublet leads and to spot scams before you transfer money

The SL network of tunnelbana (metro), commuter trains, trams, buses and ferries covers the whole region on one ticket. Load a 30-day pass onto the SL app or an SL Access card; the reduced student fare is around 680 SEK a month if you register your student status. The T-bana is fast, and its art-gallery stations are worth the ride alone, though central Stockholm is small enough to walk or cycle.

  • Get the SL app and buy the 30-day reduced pass, registering via Mecenat for the student rate
  • Ride the blue metro line stations like T-Centralen and Solna, painted like caves, at least once
  • City bikes and the free Djurgarden ferry with your SL pass make summer commutes easy

Sweden's academic style is flat and independent: you are on first-name terms with professors, group work is constant, and deadlines matter more than exams. KTH is the go-to for engineering and tech, Stockholm University for social sciences and humanities, the Stockholm School of Economics for business, and Karolinska for medicine and life sciences. Expect fewer contact hours than back home and a lot of self-directed reading.

  • Call your professor by their first name, as hierarchy is genuinely flat here
  • Budget time for group projects, which are a core part of most Swedish courses

It depends on your nationality. EU, EEA, and Swiss students need no visa or residence permit and have full right to study and stay. Non-EU students staying over 90 days need a residence permit for studies from the Swedish Migration Agency (Migrationsverket), applied for online before arrival, with proof of admission, funds, and comprehensive health insurance.

Apply as early as possible, as processing can take weeks or months in peak season. You'll also want to sort a Swedish personal number (personnummer) if you're staying a full year, as it unlocks banking, healthcare, and many services, though shorter stays can get by with a coordination number instead. Keep digital copies of everything.

  • EU/EEA/Swiss, no visa or permit needed
  • Non-EU over 90 days, study residence permit via Migrationsverket
  • Apply online early; peak-season processing is slow
  • A personnummer unlocks banking and healthcare for year-long stays

Daily life runs on fika, a coffee-and-cinnamon-bun (kanelbulle) break that is practically a civic duty. Classic husmanskost means kottbullar (meatballs), toast skagen and pickled herring, but Stockholm's food scene is deeply international too. Duck into the historic food halls to graze and pick up ingredients.

  • Do fika properly at a konditori: order a kanelbulle and let the afternoon slow down
  • Browse Ostermalms Saluhall and Hotorgshallen food halls for lunch and local produce
  • Sweden is nearly cashless, so bring a card and get Swish if you open a Swedish account

Sodermalm (Soder) is the hip, hilly island of vintage shops, cafes and viewpoints; Ostermalm is polished and pricey; Vasastan and Kungsholmen are calmer and residential; and Gamla Stan is the postcard old town you pass through but rarely live in. Student housing tends to sit further out, like Lappkarrsberget near SU or Kista near the tech campuses.

  • Soder for going out and second-hand shopping, with the best free city view at Monteliusvagen
  • Kungsholmen and Vasastan for quieter, well-connected student living
  • Djurgarden, home to Skansen and the Vasa Museum, is your green escape a short ferry hop away

Stockholm is a springboard. Uppsala is 40 minutes by train, the archipelago's 30,000 islands are a Waxholmsbolaget ferry away, and overnight cruises to Helsinki or Tallinn are a classic cheap student weekend. Gotland's medieval Visby is a summer must, and Gothenburg is three hours by fast train.

  • Take a Waxholmsbolaget ferry to Vaxholm or Grinda for an easy archipelago day trip
  • Book a Viking Line or Silja overnight ferry to Tallinn or Helsinki, with cheap cabins split between friends
  • Ride the SJ train to Uppsala (40 min) or Gothenburg (3h) and book early for the cheapest fares

A few things catch newcomers out: Systembolaget's short hours, the total reliance on cards and Swish, and just how dark December gets. Sundays are quiet, recycling is taken seriously, and Swedes value personal space, so do not sit next to a stranger on the bus if another seat is free.

  • Stock up at Systembolaget before the weekend, as it shuts Sundays and closes at 3pm Saturdays
  • Beat the winter dark with a vitamin D habit and by embracing candles and mys (cosy nights in)
  • Furnish your room cheaply via Myrorna, Stadsmissionen and the Sellpy app

🏠 Housing

What kind of place was it?

Student Residence

How much was the rent per month?

484€/month

Where was it located?

In Lappis, 10min from the University and 30min from the center

Would you recommend it?

I recommend it because the rent is not that high especially for Stockholm. The location is great, since it's 10min in bus from the 2 campuses, and 30min from the city center. Plus, there is a supermarket, gym & laundry spots, green spaces in the residence and a few restaurants. Transportations work well, and there is a shared kitchen, which allows you to meet your floor neighbours, even if the hygiene (cleaning, etc.) is not great. The one inconvenient is that the isolation is bad, but the furniture is furnished.

🍻 Social Life

What are some top bars, clubs, or events you recommend?

Favorite bar is Tilt bar, and there are a lot of chill places just for a drink. But to enter them during the weekend can be hard because of long queue, and the fact that they don't like strangers (bring your passport to enter). For clubs, most of them are open only for people over 23. Had a lot of fun at Cafe Opera, which has a beautiful room.

🎓 Uni life at Stockholm University

Which classes do you recommend… or not?

I took Marketing that was interesting? Entrepreneurship was very interesting as well, and Management too, even if very theoretical. You have group works, and not a lot of classes which is cool, but you have to work at home to learn lectures. Also, Marketing class relies on a big book which is a bit annoying.

Do you have some tips?

The one big inconvenient is that you have to register for final exams yourself and if you forget, you retake, so be careful!! But otherwise, campuses are very nice and registration easy. Very different from my home university, since it's a real campus life with plenty of restaurants, green and working sports.

✈️ Travel

Best trips to do?

There are so many travel opportunities! I created great memories in Swedish cities that are close like in Stockholm's archipelagos (Askerberga), or a bit further, like Uppsala or Göteborg, and they were all great! Archipelagos are very calm and relaxing, and you can have great AirBnb with your friends (with view on lakes and everything). Bigger cities are also beautiful with plenty of shops, bars, and activities. Also, you can travel easily and fast by train or by plane in other countries, like in Danemark or Norway, but even England or Latvia! You also have the opportunity to go to Lapplands which is a unique experience.

🌆 Stockholm vibe

What do you absolutely need to know to live your best life in Stockholm?

The city is great and every street is beautiful. You can do almost the whole city by feet, but transportations are very useful and easy, plus metro station are unique and very artistic. The transport card is a bit expensive nevertheless. But there is also the tramway which is fun, and the ferry. The cost of living is high, like prepare 500€ per month (without the rent). I recommend to try as much as possible to have an accommodation proposed by the university, because rent is very high. The city is very very safe. The weather can be hard, because from November, sunset is early (3PM in December), and it starts to be under 0° in mid-November, so prepare ski and thermic cloths! You will miss the sun but everyone has cozy lights in their rooms! The food is great, especially salmon. You can eat healthy easily, and have plenty of eating sports around the city 7 Eleven, Bröd & Salt, Presbyran, ...). You can try the local fast food Max that is great. There are plenty of activities to do in Stockholm (parks, exhibitions, museums, bars, clubs, shops, ...), I recommend Södermalm which is the best neighbourhood, for restaurants, shops and bars!

💡 Other Tips

Don't hesitate to participate in welcoming activities and warm clothes! Christmas vibes starts early and is great with the snow! Don't hesitate to travel with your friends and explore. If you stay in Lappis, you will be able to host 1 person at your place with permits that friend/family member to not pay an AirBnb.
