The Skovde TL;DR

Partners & Perks

Verified housing partners and student perks in Skovde: no blind deposits, no ghost landlords. Grab one before someone in your group does.

We’re still lining up verified partners in Skovde. In the meantime, ask the Skovde group for the housing leads students are using right now.

The University of Skovde punches above its weight in game development, computer science and serious games, drawing students who want a focused, hands-on tech education. The town is small and affordable, but it sits right on the main railway line between Gothenburg and Stockholm, so you are never far from a bigger city. The Billingen nature reserve rising above town gives you hiking, swimming and even a ski slope within minutes.

  • The University of Skovde is a Nordic hub for game design and serious-games research
  • You are on the main line: Gothenburg in about an hour, Stockholm in around two
  • Billingen's trails, lakes and slope are right on the edge of town

The student union (Studentkaren i Skovde) runs the welcome weeks, sittningar and pub nights, and Karhuset Boulogner is the main student venue. The scene is small and friendly, with a strong gaming and creative-tech crowd thanks to the university's focus. Nights out cluster in the compact centre.

  • Head to Karhuset Boulogner for union pub nights and events
  • Join welcome-week activities to meet the tight-knit international cohort
  • Expect a lively games and tech community with plenty of jams and meetups

Skovde is affordable, so budget around 8,000-10,500 SEK (roughly 700-900 euros) a month. Student rooms are relatively cheap, and the town's size means little to no transport spend. Cooking at home and weekday lunch deals keep the budget in check.

  • Student housing here is among the cheaper options in Sweden
  • Use dagens lunch weekday deals to eat out affordably
  • Buy alcohol from Systembolaget; the union pub is the budget night out

Student housing is handled mainly through Skovdebostader and the university's accommodation service, with rooms near campus and in central districts, so accept your offer early. The town is small enough that most housing is within walking or cycling distance of campus. Avoid deposits for unseen sublets.

  • Apply through Skovdebostader and the university housing office promptly
  • Most student rooms are a short walk or cycle from campus
  • Ask the Skovde group on Studcasa for sublet leads and area tips

Skovde is compact and walkable, with a bike covering the rest. Local and regional buses run on Vasttrafik; use the app for tickets. The central station is the real asset, with fast trains on the Western Main Line reaching Gothenburg and Stockholm directly.

  • Walk or cycle around town, as it is small and flat in the centre
  • Use the Vasttrafik app for buses and regional trips
  • Direct trains reach Gothenburg (about 1h) and Stockholm (about 2h)

The University of Skovde specialises in game development, informatics, computer and data science, engineering, and health and business, with many English-taught courses. Teaching is practical and project-led, often built around studios, labs and team briefs. Staff are hands-on and approachable.

  • Game development, data science and informatics are the flagship programmes
  • Expect project- and studio-based work over traditional lecturing

It depends on your nationality. EU, EEA, and Swiss students need no visa or residence permit and have full right to study and stay. Non-EU students staying over 90 days need a residence permit for studies from the Swedish Migration Agency (Migrationsverket), applied for online before arrival, with proof of admission, funds, and comprehensive health insurance.

Apply as early as possible, as processing can take weeks or months in peak season. You'll also want to sort a Swedish personal number (personnummer) if you're staying a full year, as it unlocks banking, healthcare, and many services, though shorter stays can get by with a coordination number instead. Keep digital copies of everything.

  • EU/EEA/Swiss, no visa or permit needed
  • Non-EU over 90 days, study residence permit via Migrationsverket
  • Apply online early; peak-season processing is slow
  • A personnummer unlocks banking and healthcare for year-long stays

Fika keeps the day ticking, the compact centre has cosy cafes, and the university and union keep food cheap and social. With Billingen so close, outdoor life shapes the culture, from barbecues to lake swims and winter skiing. Alcohol comes from Systembolaget.

  • Take fika breaks in the cafes around Hertig Johans gata
  • Barbecue and swim at Billingen's lakes in summer
  • Sweden is cashless, so carry a card

The centre around Hertig Johans torg holds the shops, cafes and nightlife, with campus close by. Residential and student areas like Norrmalm and Ekedal sit within easy reach, and the closer you are to Billingen, the quicker you get to the trails.

  • The centre for walkable access to campus and nightlife
  • Norrmalm and Ekedal for nearby residential student living
  • Anything toward Billingen for fast access to nature

Being on the main line makes weekends easy: Gothenburg's coast and city in about an hour, Stockholm in around two. Closer to home, Billingen is the outdoor playground, and Lake Vanern with the fairytale Lacko Castle is a short trip away.

  • Hike, swim or ski at Billingen right on the town's edge
  • Day-trip to Lacko Castle and Lake Vanern
  • Train to Gothenburg (about 1h) or Stockholm (about 2h) for city weekends

Lean into the outdoors, as Billingen is the reason many students love Skovde, and use the excellent train links to explore on weekends. Grab a bike, mind Systembolaget's hours, and prepare for dark winters with cosy habits.

  • Get out to Billingen regularly for hiking, swimming or skiing
  • Book train tickets early for the cheapest Gothenburg and Stockholm fares
  • Stock up at Systembolaget before weekends

Student Residence

400€/month

Where was it located?

In Skövde, 15min of the University

Would you recommend it?

I would recommend it overall. The residence was practical and well-located, which made daily life easier. I appreciated the international atmosphere — it was a good way to meet other students from different backgrounds. The facilities were generally sufficient, and having everything included (furniture, internet, etc.) made the move-in process much simpler.

🍻 Social Life

What are some top bars, clubs, or events you recommend?

Skövde isn’t a very big city, so the nightlife is smaller compared to larger Swedish student towns. Still, there are a few nice spots. The student union organizes events and parties quite often, which are great for meeting people. For bars and clubs, the main choices are downtown, and even if the options are limited, the atmosphere is usually friendly and welcoming. Personally, I enjoyed the student events more than the regular clubs, since they felt more international and student-oriented. If you’re looking for a huge party scene, Skövde might feel a bit quiet, but for a student experience it was definitely enough.

🎓 Uni life at Högskolan i Skövde

Which classes do you recommend… or not?

I think every classes are quite good to follow so don't hesitate !

Do you have some tips?

Högskolan i Skövde is a small but very student-friendly university. The campus isn’t huge, but that makes it easy to find your way around and creates a welcoming atmosphere. Most buildings are modern and well-equipped, with good study spaces and labs. Registration and administration were quite straightforward — the staff were helpful and most things could be handled online, which made the process smooth. The international office also did a good job supporting exchange students. If I had to choose again, I would pick the same university. It’s not a “big city” student life like Gothenburg or Stockholm, but the community is close-knit, the professors are approachable, and it’s a great place to focus on studies while still enjoying student activities. Tips & tricks: Get involved with the student union — it’s the best way to meet people and join events. Make use of the library and group study rooms, they’re really practical. Don’t hesitate to ask teachers questions, they are usually very open and accessible. Explore the surroundings (like Billingen hill) — nature is literally at your doorstep.

✈️ Travel

Best trips to do?

From Skövde, you can easily reach some really nice places for trips. Gothenburg and Stockholm are both accessible by train (around 1–2 hours to Gothenburg, 2–3 to Stockholm), so they’re perfect for weekend visits. Closer to Skövde, you have beautiful nature spots — Billingen hill is right next to the city for hiking and skiing in winter, and Vänern (the largest lake in Sweden) is not far if you like swimming or relaxing by the water. Another nice trip is to Jönköping and Lake Vättern, which is very scenic. If you want something cultural, Lidköping and Mariestad are charming towns by Vänern with a more local vibe. Skövde is also well connected for longer trips — it’s quite easy to get to Norway (for example Oslo) by train or bus, which makes for a great weekend adventure. Plus, the Erasmus student network regularly organizes group trips, including some amazing ones to Lapland in the north of Sweden, which is a unique experience. So whether you’re into city trips, nature, or exploring Scandinavia, Skövde is a really good starting point.

🌆 Skovde vibe

What do you absolutely need to know to live your best life in Skovde?

To live your best life in Skövde, there are a few key things to know. First, embrace the student community — it’s a small city, so most of the fun and social life happens through the student union and Erasmus events. Getting involved is the best way to meet people quickly. Second, be prepared for the Swedish winter: good clothes, proper shoes, and learning to enjoy outdoor activities like skiing or hiking on Billingen will make a big difference. Third, transportation is easy — the city is compact, so a bike is super useful, and trains connect you well to Gothenburg, Stockholm, and even Norway for trips. Finally, take advantage of the Erasmus trips: they organize lots of excursions, even to Lapland, which is an unforgettable experience. In short: get involved, enjoy nature, be ready for winter, and travel as much as possible — that’s how you’ll make the most of Skövde.

💡 Other Tips

A few extra tips for students in Skövde: Cost of living: Sweden can be expensive, so cooking at home and shopping at cheaper supermarkets (like Willys or Lidl) really helps. Language: You can get by with English everywhere, but learning a few words of Swedish is fun and appreciated. Student card: Get your student card (Mecenat) — it gives you discounts on trains, buses, and even some shops. Nature is close: Don’t underestimate how nice it is to have Billingen hill and the lakes nearby. They’re perfect for hiking, swimming, or winter sports. Plan your trips early: Trains and long-distance buses are cheaper if booked in advance, especially for trips to Gothenburg, Stockholm, or Norway. Community size: Skövde is small, so social life really depends on getting involved in student events — it’s easy to feel at home if you participate.
