Would you recommend it?
I would recommend it overall. The residence was practical and well-located, which made daily life easier. I appreciated the international atmosphere — it was a good way to meet other students from different backgrounds. The facilities were generally sufficient, and having everything included (furniture, internet, etc.) made the move-in process much simpler.
What are some top bars, clubs, or events you recommend?
Skövde isn’t a very big city, so the nightlife is smaller compared to larger Swedish student towns. Still, there are a few nice spots. The student union organizes events and parties quite often, which are great for meeting people. For bars and clubs, the main choices are downtown, and even if the options are limited, the atmosphere is usually friendly and welcoming. Personally, I enjoyed the student events more than the regular clubs, since they felt more international and student-oriented. If you’re looking for a huge party scene, Skövde might feel a bit quiet, but for a student experience it was definitely enough.
Which classes do you recommend… or not?
I think every classes are quite good to follow so don't hesitate !
Do you have some tips?
Högskolan i Skövde is a small but very student-friendly university. The campus isn’t huge, but that makes it easy to find your way around and creates a welcoming atmosphere. Most buildings are modern and well-equipped, with good study spaces and labs. Registration and administration were quite straightforward — the staff were helpful and most things could be handled online, which made the process smooth. The international office also did a good job supporting exchange students. If I had to choose again, I would pick the same university. It’s not a “big city” student life like Gothenburg or Stockholm, but the community is close-knit, the professors are approachable, and it’s a great place to focus on studies while still enjoying student activities. Tips & tricks: Get involved with the student union — it’s the best way to meet people and join events. Make use of the library and group study rooms, they’re really practical. Don’t hesitate to ask teachers questions, they are usually very open and accessible. Explore the surroundings (like Billingen hill) — nature is literally at your doorstep.
Best trips to do?
From Skövde, you can easily reach some really nice places for trips. Gothenburg and Stockholm are both accessible by train (around 1–2 hours to Gothenburg, 2–3 to Stockholm), so they’re perfect for weekend visits. Closer to Skövde, you have beautiful nature spots — Billingen hill is right next to the city for hiking and skiing in winter, and Vänern (the largest lake in Sweden) is not far if you like swimming or relaxing by the water. Another nice trip is to Jönköping and Lake Vättern, which is very scenic. If you want something cultural, Lidköping and Mariestad are charming towns by Vänern with a more local vibe. Skövde is also well connected for longer trips — it’s quite easy to get to Norway (for example Oslo) by train or bus, which makes for a great weekend adventure. Plus, the Erasmus student network regularly organizes group trips, including some amazing ones to Lapland in the north of Sweden, which is a unique experience. So whether you’re into city trips, nature, or exploring Scandinavia, Skövde is a really good starting point.
What do you absolutely need to know to live your best life in Skovde?
To live your best life in Skövde, there are a few key things to know. First, embrace the student community — it’s a small city, so most of the fun and social life happens through the student union and Erasmus events. Getting involved is the best way to meet people quickly. Second, be prepared for the Swedish winter: good clothes, proper shoes, and learning to enjoy outdoor activities like skiing or hiking on Billingen will make a big difference. Third, transportation is easy — the city is compact, so a bike is super useful, and trains connect you well to Gothenburg, Stockholm, and even Norway for trips. Finally, take advantage of the Erasmus trips: they organize lots of excursions, even to Lapland, which is an unforgettable experience. In short: get involved, enjoy nature, be ready for winter, and travel as much as possible — that’s how you’ll make the most of Skövde.
A few extra tips for students in Skövde: Cost of living: Sweden can be expensive, so cooking at home and shopping at cheaper supermarkets (like Willys or Lidl) really helps. Language: You can get by with English everywhere, but learning a few words of Swedish is fun and appreciated. Student card: Get your student card (Mecenat) — it gives you discounts on trains, buses, and even some shops. Nature is close: Don’t underestimate how nice it is to have Billingen hill and the lakes nearby. They’re perfect for hiking, swimming, or winter sports. Plan your trips early: Trains and long-distance buses are cheaper if booked in advance, especially for trips to Gothenburg, Stockholm, or Norway. Community size: Skövde is small, so social life really depends on getting involved in student events — it’s easy to feel at home if you participate.
