The Kalmar TL;DR

Sweden runs on student life — nation parties in Uppsala and Lund, fika breaks between lectures, saunas, lake swims and northern lights trips. English everywhere makes settling in stupidly easy.

A sunny Baltic coastal town wrapped around a Renaissance castle, Kalmar offers relaxed seaside student life and is the gateway to the island of Oland.

Partners & Perks

Verified housing partners and student perks in Kalmar: no blind deposits, no ghost landlords. Grab one before someone in your group does.

We’re still lining up verified partners in Kalmar. In the meantime, ask the Kalmar group for the housing leads students are using right now.

Kalmar is one of two homes of Linnaeus University, set on the south-east coast where a well-preserved old town, a fairytale castle and the long bridge to Oland give the place real charm. It is smaller and cheaper than the big Swedish cities, and the Baltic light and beaches make it one of the sunnier corners of the country. You get a calm, safe base that is easy to settle into.

  • Linnaeus University runs its exchange intake across Kalmar and Vaxjo with active buddy schemes
  • The 6km Oland bridge puts a whole island of beaches and nature on your doorstep
  • It is cheaper and sunnier than most of Sweden

Linnekaren, the student union, organises welcome weeks, sittningar and pub nights, and because the community is fairly small, it is easy to become a regular face. Kvarnholmen, the old-town island, holds most of the bars and cafes. Summer term brings barbecues, harbour swims and trips over to Oland.

  • Join the Linnekaren student union events and welcome week to meet people fast
  • Kvarnholmen's bars and the harbour are the social hub
  • In warm months, head to Kalmar's beaches or over the bridge to Oland

Kalmar is one of the cheaper options here, so budget around 8,000-10,500 SEK (roughly 700-900 euros) a month. Kalmarhem student rooms are good value, and the town's small size keeps transport costs near zero. Cooking and weekday lunch deals do most of the saving.

  • Rent from Kalmarhem for affordable student housing
  • Use weekday dagens lunch offers to eat out cheaply
  • Buy alcohol only at Systembolaget; union events are the budget night out

Kalmarhem is the main student landlord, with housing on Kvarnholmen and in Malmen, Funkabo and Norrliden, and the university helps place exchange students, so accept early. Kvarnholmen is central and lively, while the outer areas are cheaper but a short bus or cycle away. Do not pay deposits for unseen sublets.

  • Apply to Kalmarhem and take your university housing offer quickly
  • Kvarnholmen for central life; Funkabo and Norrliden for cheaper rooms
  • Ask the Kalmar group on Studcasa for current sublet leads

Kalmar is small, flat and cycle-friendly, so a bike plus your own two feet cover most days. City and regional buses run on Kalmar Lanstrafik (KLT); use the app for tickets. The train station connects you to Malmo, Copenhagen and Gothenburg for longer trips.

  • Get a bike, as the town and Kvarnholmen are easy to cycle
  • Use the KLT app for buses across town and toward Oland
  • Trains link Kalmar to Malmo and, with a change, Gothenburg and Stockholm

Linnaeus University is strong in marine and environmental science, business, design and the humanities, with English-taught courses for exchange students. Teaching is independent and project-based, with continuous assessment. Staff are informal and approachable.

  • Marine biology and environmental science are local strengths, fitting the coastal setting
  • Expect group work and seminars over big final exams

It depends on your nationality. EU, EEA, and Swiss students need no visa or residence permit and have full right to study and stay. Non-EU students staying over 90 days need a residence permit for studies from the Swedish Migration Agency (Migrationsverket), applied for online before arrival, with proof of admission, funds, and comprehensive health insurance.

Apply as early as possible, as processing can take weeks or months in peak season. You'll also want to sort a Swedish personal number (personnummer) if you're staying a full year, as it unlocks banking, healthcare, and many services, though shorter stays can get by with a coordination number instead. Keep digital copies of everything.

  • EU/EEA/Swiss, no visa or permit needed
  • Non-EU over 90 days, study residence permit via Migrationsverket
  • Apply online early; peak-season processing is slow
  • A personnummer unlocks banking and healthcare for year-long stays

Fika is a daily ritual, the harbour brings fresh Baltic seafood, and the old-town cafes on Kvarnholmen are where you while away afternoons. A Saturday market and the union's cheap dinners round out student eating. Alcohol comes from Systembolaget.

  • Take fika breaks in the Kvarnholmen cafes
  • Try Baltic seafood at the harbour and Oland's farm produce in season
  • Sweden is cashless, so carry a card

Kvarnholmen, the grid-planned old-town island, is the centre of everything: shops, bars, campus buildings and the castle nearby. Malmen sits close to the castle and university, while Funkabo and Norrliden are residential student-housing areas a little further out but still cyclable.

  • Kvarnholmen for central, walkable student life
  • Malmen for proximity to campus and the castle
  • Funkabo and Norrliden for cheaper, quieter rooms

Oland is the obvious escape: cross the bridge for beaches, windmills, nature reserves and the royal summer palace at Solliden. Inland lies Glasriket, the Kingdom of Crystal, where historic glassworks run open studios. Malmo and Copenhagen are reachable by train for a bigger weekend.

  • Cross the Oland bridge for beaches, Stora Alvaret and the southern lighthouse
  • Explore Glasriket's glassworks like Kosta Boda and Orrefors inland
  • Take the train to Malmo or Copenhagen for a city weekend

Grab a bike, make friends with the union crowd early, and plan at least one proper Oland trip while the weather is good. Mind Systembolaget's hours and prepare for dark, quiet winters by leaning into cosy indoor culture.

  • Buy a used bike and lights for getting around town
  • Stock up at Systembolaget before weekends
  • Save a warm weekend for cycling or camping on Oland

🏠 Housing

What kind of place was it?

Student Residence

How much was the rent per month?

Around 500/month

Where was it located?

15min bike from school

Would you recommend it?

Difficult to understand the website to get the apartment at first, especially that you need to register early to get some credits

🍻 Social Life

What are some top bars, clubs, or events you recommend?

Small town, several bars and one that is doing nightclub too but a bit small. But everybody's nice there and welcoming

🎓 Uni life at Linnéuniversitetet

Which classes do you recommend… or not?

Intercultural management in general were good classes. My favorite was a class of statistics

Do you have some tips?

Very good and clean campus, easy to access in the middle of the city I would definitely go back there

✈️ Travel

Best trips to do?

Sweden is a big country and you can travel easily by train, but you need to count several hours to travel to the closest big cities there. Going in the north a bit before winter is incredible just like the other countries

🌆 Kalmar vibe

What do you absolutely need to know to live your best life in Kalmar?

Cost of living is expensive. You can integrate sports clubs inside the city (out of university) and have a lot of fun outside before winter as it is very good to live. Running there was amazing, around the sea and you can try some summer activities even in September/October

💡 Other Tips

Be careful of the winter part, it is quite shocking, even if you are prepared to it. Don't hesitate to interact with people, even swedish people are not that much closed on themself once you start talking to them. They will love you if you learn some swedish words ;) (Tack Tack - TYSM)
