Ljubljana is a tiny, green and endlessly liveable capital, a car-free old town on a willow-lined river, a huge student population and the Alps, caves and Adriatic all within reach.

Partners & Perks

Verified housing partners and student perks in Ljubljana: no blind deposits, no ghost landlords. Grab one before someone in your group does.

We’re still lining up verified partners in Ljubljana. In the meantime, ask the Ljubljana group for the housing leads students are using right now.

Ljubljana is one of Europe's most charming small capitals: a pedestrianised old town wrapped around the Ljubljanica river, a castle on the hill, and a big, youthful energy thanks to the University of Ljubljana, whose students make up a huge share of the city. It is green, safe, walkable and affordable, and you are within an hour or two of lakes, mountains, caves and the sea. Few cities pack so much variety into such a compact, friendly package.

  • The University of Ljubljana is huge relative to the city, so students are everywhere.
  • Lakes, the Julian Alps, caves and the Adriatic coast all sit within a couple of hours.

Student life is vibrant and cheap: Metelkova, a graffiti-covered autonomous former barracks, is the alternative nightlife hub, while the bars along the river and in the old town buzz in warmer months. Student status brings the famous subsidised Boni meal vouchers that make eating out genuinely affordable. ESN Ljubljana is highly active, running trips, parties and welcome events that fold the big Erasmus crowd together fast.

  • Metelkova for alternative clubs and bars; the riverbank for summer drinks.
  • Use your student Boni subsidised-meal vouchers for cheap restaurant lunches.
  • ESN Ljubljana runs a packed calendar of trips, parties and welcome events.

Ljubljana is affordable for a capital, so budget around €700–1,000 a month, at the lower-middle of Slovenia's band. The subsidised student meal scheme (Boni) keeps food costs remarkably low, rooms are reasonable, and the compact city means little transport spend. Rent is the main cost, but it is far gentler than western Europe.

  • A room in a shared flat runs €250–400; the Rožna Dolina student dorms are cheaper still.
  • Student Boni vouchers get you a subsidised restaurant meal for a few euros.
  • A monthly Urbana transit pass for students is around €20.

The cheapest option is a subsidised place in the student dorms, above all the big Rožna Dolina campus, allocated through the national student housing system, apply early. Otherwise the private market runs on Nepremicnine.net, Facebook groups and word of mouth, with Center, Trnovo and Vič popular. View before paying and take a local along if you can.

  • Apply for subsidised student dorms (Rožna Dolina) through the national system early.
  • Search Nepremicnine.net and the Ljubljana Erasmus Facebook groups for private rooms.
  • Ask the Ljubljana Studcasa group whether a rent is fair before you sign.

Ljubljana is tiny and made for walking and cycling, the old town is car-free, and the BicikeLJ bike-share scheme is cheap and everywhere. The LPP city buses cover the rest, paid for with a rechargeable Urbana card, and you rarely need more. Everything central is within a twenty-minute stroll, and the train and bus stations sit right by the centre for onward trips.

  • Join BicikeLJ bike share, the first hour is free and stations are all over.
  • Get an Urbana card for LPP buses; a student monthly pass is around €20.
  • The car-free old town means most days you will simply walk.

The University of Ljubljana is one of the oldest and largest in the region, with faculties scattered across the city rather than on one campus, strong across law, humanities, engineering and the arts. Teaching mixes lectures and seminars, and while many courses are in Slovene, there is a growing range of English-taught options for exchange students. The international office and ESN are well set up for Erasmus arrivals.

  • Faculties are spread across the city, not on a single campus, so find where yours sits.
  • English-taught courses exist but are limited; check availability with your faculty early.

Slovenia is an EU and Schengen member, so your paperwork depends on your nationality. EU/EEA citizens can move freely and simply register their residence at the local administrative unit (upravna enota) if staying beyond three months, receiving a registration certificate for daily admin.

Non-EU students, including those from the UK, US, Canada and Australia, need a national (D) visa or a temporary residence permit for study, applied for through a Slovenian embassy or the administrative unit, with proof of funds, accommodation and health insurance. Begin months ahead, as processing and document legalisation can be slow, and carry certified translations where asked.

  • EU/EEA, free movement; register at the upravna enota if staying over 3 months
  • Non-EU, national D-visa or study residence permit via a Slovenian embassy
  • Prepare proof of funds, housing and insurance; start early

Slovenian food blends Alpine, Mediterranean and Balkan influences: try štruklji (rolled dumplings), jota stew, kranjska klobasa (Carniolan sausage), and potica nut roll, alongside excellent gelato and cheap Balkan burek and čevapi. The Plečnik-designed Central Market and the Friday Odprta kuhna (Open Kitchen) street-food market are the culinary heart. Coffee and riverside terraces are a way of life here.

  • Hit the Friday Odprta kuhna (Open Kitchen) street-food market in the centre.
  • Try kranjska klobasa, štruklji and a slice of potica; grab burek for a cheap late-night bite.
  • Shop the Plečnik-designed Central Market by the Dragon Bridge.

Center is the pedestrianised old town along the river, pretty but pricier, while Trnovo and Krakovo just south are leafy, characterful and popular with students. Vič sits near several faculties and the Rožna Dolina dorms, Bežigrad is a solid residential area to the north, and Šiška and Tabor are up-and-coming with good value. Nothing is far from the middle.

  • Center for old-town life; Trnovo and Krakovo for leafy, student-friendly streets.
  • Vič and Rožna Dolina for proximity to faculties and the dorms.
  • Šiška and Tabor for good-value rooms a short ride out.

Ljubljana's location is spectacular. Lake Bled is under an hour by train or bus, Lake Bohinj and the Julian Alps of Triglav National Park a little further, and the Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle about an hour away. The Adriatic coast at Piran is 90 minutes, and across the borders Trieste is 90 minutes, Zagreb two, and Venice around three for an easy weekend abroad.

  • Lake Bled (under 1 hour) and Lake Bohinj for alpine lakes and hikes.
  • Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle, about 1 hour away.
  • Piran on the coast (1.5 hours), or Trieste, Zagreb and Venice across the borders.

Sort your student status and Boni meal vouchers early, as they make eating out absurdly cheap. Get a bike, since Ljubljana is best explored on two wheels, and learn a few Slovene words even though young people speak excellent English. The city empties in summer when students go home, so time your arrival and use ESN to build a circle fast.

  • Register for the Boni subsidised-meal scheme as soon as you can.
  • Use BicikeLJ or bring a bike, as the flat, compact city is made for cycling.
  • Ask the Ljubljana Studcasa group which lake and coast trips to prioritise.

Best trips to do?

This city is super well located, I was able to make more than 5 trips in one semester, we are almost from Italy to Honor to Slovakia to Austria, which allows you to do everything by bus and for very little money.

🌆 Ljubljana vibe

What do you absolutely need to know to live your best life in Ljubljana?

Transport is not very well served, you often have to change trains. It's a very safe country, especially for me as a girl, I never felt in danger. Housing prices are very expensive compared to France, but the rest of life is much cheaper. For example, 1 kg of chicken is about €5, olive oil barely €6, and alcohol is €5 per liter. For some, it's very affordable, so we eat much better. There's even a Leclerc where you can find all the French brands.

💡 Other Tips

If you have the possibility of coming by car, it's really great because you're not far from everything and it will allow you to move whenever you want to go and discover the surrounding countries because car rentals are complicated.
