Manila is a sprawling, high-energy megacity, chaotic traffic and dense neighbourhoods offset by warm people, cheap living and some of Asia's best beaches a short flight away. It throws a lot at you, and repays an open mind.

Partners & Perks

Verified housing partners and student perks in Manila: no blind deposits, no ghost landlords. Grab one before someone in your group does.

We’re still lining up verified partners in Manila. In the meantime, ask the Manila group for the housing leads students are using right now.

Manila immerses you in Filipino life: a huge, English-speaking student population, famously friendly locals and a low cost of living that lets your budget go far. Metro Manila packs top universities, buzzing malls and nightlife into a chaotic but exciting sprawl, with the country's islands and beaches on your doorstep. It is intense and traffic-choked, but few places are warmer or more affordable.

  • English is an official language, so lectures and daily life are easy to navigate.
  • Cheap domestic flights put Palawan, Boracay and Cebu a short hop away.

Student and social life orbits Makati's Poblacion district, the bars of Bonifacio Global City (BGC) and the university belts of Quezon City and Taft Avenue. Malls double as social hubs given the heat, and karaoke (videoke) is a national pastime. Nights out are cheap, lively and welcoming to newcomers.

  • Head to Poblacion in Makati for the densest, most varied nightlife.
  • Sing videoke and eat street food with classmates, the classic Filipino night in.
  • Ask the Manila group on Studcasa which areas are safe and fun after dark.

Manila is inexpensive by European standards, street food, transport and shared condos all cost little, so most students live well within the country band. Rent in a modern Makati or BGC condo is the biggest expense; eating local and using Grab keeps everyday spending tiny. Imported goods and Western bars are where prices climb.

  • A meal of adobo or sisig with rice at a carinderia costs just a euro or two.
  • Share a condo in Quezon City or Makati to spread the rent and stay mid-band.
  • Use a Beep card for cheap train rides and Grab for affordable door-to-door trips.

Most students share furnished condos in Makati, BGC or Quezon City (near UP and Ateneo), or rooms near Taft Avenue for DLSU and UST. Condo sharing via Facebook groups and agents is the norm, and a pool, gym and security are standard. Proximity to your campus matters hugely given the traffic.

  • Search Facebook Marketplace and condo-sharing groups, and post in the Studcasa Manila group for rooms.
  • Live within walking or short-Grab distance of campus, traffic makes long commutes brutal.
  • Check the condo has reliable water, backup power and air-conditioning before signing.

Metro Manila's traffic is legendary, so plan around it. The LRT-1, LRT-2 and MRT-3 rail lines (tapped with a Beep card) beat the roads when they go your way, while jeepneys and tricycles cover short local hops. For everything else, the Grab app is the reliable, air-conditioned option.

  • Get a Beep card for the LRT and MRT trains, which dodge the worst traffic.
  • Use Grab for door-to-door trips; hail jeepneys and tricycles for cheap short hops.
  • Avoid road travel at rush hour (roughly 7 to 10am and 5 to 8pm) whenever you can.

Metro Manila hosts the country's leading universities: the University of the Philippines Diliman (the national flagship) and Ateneo de Manila in Quezon City, De La Salle University on Taft Avenue, and the University of Santo Tomas, the oldest in Asia, founded in 1611. Teaching is in English, and exchange and international programmes are well established.

  • UP Diliman and Ateneo sit in Quezon City; DLSU and UST are in Manila proper.
  • Pick housing near your specific campus, as crossing the metro daily is exhausting.

This depends entirely on your nationality, so treat the below as the shape of it and confirm with the Philippine embassy and your host uni. Many nationalities (most EU countries, the UK, US, Canada, Australia) get 30 days visa-free on arrival, extendable at the Bureau of Immigration. For a short exchange or non-degree study you usually don't need a full student visa, you get a Special Study Permit (SSP) instead, arranged through your university.

For a longer or degree-linked stay you'll need the 9(f) student visa, which is more paperwork: transcript of records, medical exam, NBI/police clearance, and your host uni's endorsement. Start early, Philippine bureaucracy is slow and loves a photocopy. Your exchange coordinator has walked people through this before, so lean on them hard.

  • Many nationalities: 30 days visa-free, extendable at the Bureau of Immigration
  • Short / non-degree study: Special Study Permit (SSP) via your uni
  • Longer / degree study: 9(f) student visa, medical, police clearance, endorsement
  • Always confirm the rules for your specific passport with the Philippine embassy

Filipino food is savoury, sweet and hearty: adobo, sinigang, sisig, lechon and, to finish, the colourful shaved-ice dessert halo-halo. Rice comes with everything, street food is everywhere, and Jollibee is a beloved institution. Meals are communal and generous, and the milk-tea and coffee-shop scene is huge among students.

  • Try sisig, chicken adobo and a bowl of sinigang at a local carinderia.
  • Cool down with halo-halo and sample street snacks like taho and isaw.
  • Join the milk-tea craze and grab classic Filipino fast food at Jollibee.

Makati is the polished business and nightlife hub, with Poblacion as its party heart; BGC (Bonifacio Global City) is the modern, walkable, expat-friendly district. Quezon City is the sprawling university zone (UP, Ateneo), while Manila proper holds historic Intramuros and the Malate and Ermita areas near DLSU and UST.

  • Makati and Poblacion: central, safe and nightlife-rich.
  • BGC: modern, walkable and popular with international students.
  • Quezon City: the university belt, good for UP and Ateneo students.

Manila is your gateway to the islands. Tagaytay and the Taal volcano are a couple of hours south for a cool-air escape, the mountain city of Baguio four to five hours north, and diving at Anilao in Batangas within reach for a weekend. Cheap domestic flights open up Palawan, Boracay, Cebu and Bohol for longer breaks.

  • Drive up to Tagaytay for cooler air and views over the Taal volcano.
  • Fly cheaply to El Nido (Palawan) or Boracay for world-class beaches.
  • Escape the heat in Baguio, the pine-clad summer capital in the mountains.

Plan your life around the traffic, live near campus and time trips to dodge rush hour. Prepare for heat, humidity and the June-to-November typhoon and rainy season, and always carry an umbrella. Keep some cash for jeepneys and street food, stay aware in crowded areas, and lean into the famously warm hospitality.

  • Download Grab and load a Beep card before you need them.
  • Carry a small umbrella and light layers for downpours and fierce air-conditioning.
  • Keep small peso notes for jeepneys, tricycles and street food.

🏠 Housing

What kind of place was it?

Classic Apartment

How much was the rent per month?

Around 200

Where was it located?

Quezon City, 2 min from school

Would you recommend it?

Not expensive because we are five. It's at the 22nd floor so very nice view but I think the apartment is minim 30 years, nothing is new in it but it does the job.

🍻 Social Life

What are some top bars, clubs, or events you recommend?

There are few free clubs and bars near the University. The best ones are better clubs and bars in Makati but you need to pay for it (but they are really good).

🎓 Uni life at Ateneo de Manila

Which classes do you recommend… or not?

Marketing super easy. Maths are easy as well. Do not take OPMAN (loooot of work to do). Finance is a lot of work as well but depending on the teacher.

Do you have some tips?

The campus is enormous there is a lot of things. Not quite new (nothing is really new in the Philippines as it is a very poor country) but in the Philippines is the best campus.

✈️ Travel

Best trips to do?

The trips in the Philippines are AMAZING. You can have beautiful beaches, montains, ricefiels... in less than 3 hours in bus. If you want to go to the islands (beauuuutifuuul), you take either take the ferry or the plane depending on how far it is. But the travels are nothing like Manila. Manila is a big city with pollution and trafic. The rest of the Philippines are amazing, we all love it so much. My advice would be to put your classes on 2 or 3 days (it is possible with Ateneo) and travel around every weekend (so afordable and so so nice).

🌆 Manila vibe

What do you absolutely need to know to live your best life in Manila?

The public transport are not good but there are mototaxi and cabs on the app GRAB (very cheap). Manila has a lot of air pollution, traffic and noise but it is also super secure.

💡 Other Tips

The people here are so nice. You have to pay almost everything by cash. Everybody talks through Messenger or Whatsapp. If you need any more information, do not hesitate to contact me!Do not forget to have fuuuun ! The Philippines are so great, enjoy !!

🏠 Housing

What kind of place was it?

Classic Apartment

How much was the rent per month?

300euros

Where was it located?

At Infina towers a residence in Quezon City not far from the university

Would you recommend it?

Yes I shared it with another french girl that I did not know and it allowed us to become really close friend. A lot of others exchange students were also in this residence so I made plenty of friends there. The accommodations are great we had a pool, gym and a lot of staff and the price is more than okay.

🍻 Social Life

What are some top bars, clubs, or events you recommend?

Manila is not the best city to go out but you still have numerous bars and club at makati and also next to the university in Quezon City.

🎓 Uni life at Ateneo de Manila

Which classes do you recommend… or not?

European cinema (we only watched films and the homework were very chill). Introduction to media studies. Feminism in media

Do you have some tips?

The campus is great the administrative part (when registering to your class) can be long and complicated but once it’s over everything was smooth.

✈️ Travel

Best trips to do?

Every weekend we traveled in the Philippines or abroad. The best places in the Philippines were Boracay, Siargao, Banaue and Tagaytay. Abroad we went to Taiwan, Indonesia, Japan and South Korea and I really recommend those four countries.

🌆 Manila vibe

What do you absolutely need to know to live your best life in Manila?

Go out of Manila the city can feel very heavy sometimes. There is a lot of noise, it is very crowed and messy. The city is not very clean of course but I was not surprised by that. I liked the city because it was very different from Europe but I know that a lot of my friends hated it so travel as much as you can.

🏠 Housing

What kind of place was it?

Classic Apartment

How much was the rent per month?

325

Where was it located?

In Infina Towers at Aurora Boulevard, Quezon City, 15min from school but a bit car from Makati (where the bars are)

Would you recommend it?

I liked the fact that I was with other students from my university so we were always hanging out together and we see each other as family now. Also the place is clean et there is a big pool, which is very cool considering the temperature in Manila. Also the residence is really secured and if you need help with anything you can ask the reception.

🍻 Social Life

What are some top bars, clubs, or events you recommend?

It’s not in Manila that you will find the best bars or clubs. To be honest you will never do a cafe terasse at the end of class bc there is none in Manila. But Makati is a good place to go out. You should trust filipinos and go where they advise you to go.

🎓 Uni life at Ateneo de Manila University

Which classes do you recommend… or not?

Classes are really simple here, and also the classes are often put online because of the météo or just because the professor prefers to do it online. Also the « Cross cultural communication » class is so cool ! Like you’re just talking and playing with the professor and your classmates to learn about cultural differences and adaptation.

Do you have some tips?

The campus is cool but also sooo big. Like you can be drop off by a taxi inside the university if you want to. Also there is a buddy system so you’re gonna be in touch with a filipino and they are so cool and nice, they are gonna help you for everything !

✈️ Travel

Best trips to do?

We traveled almost every weekends from thursday nights to sunday night ! It’s so easy to travel around the Philippines by bus, ferry and planes. Also it’s super easy to travel abroad ! We did 10 days in South Korea and Japan, 10 days in Indonesia, and at the end of the semester 3 weeks in Thailand and 3 weeks in Vietnam. Ateneo allows that you miss 6 classes per semester for the 1h30 classes (by class) and that you miss 3 classes for the 3h classes. So at the end you can miss 3 weeks of classes.

🌆 Manila vibe

What do you absolutely need to know to live your best life in Manila?

To be honest Manila is not a good city to live in. The traffic is terrible, it’s noisy, it’s not clean, it’s not really enjoyable to live in Manila. But if you try to adapt and don’t except to much from the city you can live a good experience. It’s also that we didn’t spend so much time in Manila except for school and going out with some friends so we didn’t really experience the life in Manila.

💡 Other Tips

Just don’t be afraid of the locals, they are super nice and often just want to help you. Say yes to every opportunity, even if it’s not that organized ! This is where you’re gonna live the best experiences ! Live day to day
