Breukelen is a tiny riverside village between Amsterdam and Utrecht, best known as the home of Nyenrode Business University and its moated castle campus. It offers a quiet, green base with two great cities barely 15 minutes away by train.

Partners & Perks

Verified housing partners and student perks in Breukelen: no blind deposits, no ghost landlords. Grab one before someone in your group does.

We’re still lining up verified partners in Breukelen. In the meantime, ask the Breukelen group for the housing leads students are using right now.

Breukelen is unlike anywhere else on this list: a small, historic village on the River Vecht whose main claim to fame is Nyenrode Business Universiteit, the Netherlands only private university, set on a moated castle estate. It gives you a calm, green, distinctly Dutch base while Amsterdam and Utrecht sit barely 15 minutes away by train. If you want tight-knit campus life plus big-city access, this is a rare combination - and yes, New York Brooklyn takes its name from here.

  • Home to Nyenrode Business Universiteit, set on a genuine moated castle estate.
  • Amsterdam and Utrecht are both around 15 minutes away by frequent train.
  • A quiet, green riverside village - the antidote to big-city intensity.

Student life at Nyenrode is famously close-knit and campus-centred, built around its residential estate, student association and business-school traditions rather than a big-city bar scene. For nightlife you simply hop the train to Utrecht or Amsterdam, both minutes away. In the village itself, life revolves around the campus, a few local cafes and the Vecht riverside. Expect an intense, community-driven cohort where you get to know everyone.

  • Nyenrode student life centres on its residential campus and student association.
  • Utrecht (about 15 min) and Amsterdam (about 20 min) are your nightlife by train.
  • In summer, terraces and boats appear along the River Vecht.

Costs track the Dutch band, though a small village can be cheaper than the big cities if you find a room locally - budget roughly 950 to 1,400 euros a month. Campus and village rooms are limited, so many students weigh Breukelen against cheaper or livelier rooms in Utrecht. Factor in regular train fares to Utrecht and Amsterdam, and note that Nyenrode being private makes the wider experience feel pricier.

  • Rooms are scarce in the village; compare with Utrecht where supply is larger.
  • Budget for frequent NS train fares to Utrecht and Amsterdam.
  • Cook with housemates and shop at Albert Heijn or Lidl to keep costs down.

Housing is the practical challenge here: Breukelen is small, so rooms are limited and many students end up living in Utrecht or Amsterdam and commuting the short distance in. Check what Nyenrode offers on or near campus first, then look at Utrecht via Kamernet, ROOM.nl and HousingAnywhere. Never pay a deposit before viewing. Being on the direct Amsterdam to Utrecht line means commuting is genuinely painless.

  • Ask Nyenrode about on-campus and nearby village rooms as your first port of call.
  • If nothing local fits, base yourself in Utrecht and commute - it is 15 minutes.
  • Use Kamernet and HousingAnywhere; ask the Studcasa Breukelen group about rooms.

The star asset is Breukelen station on the main Amsterdam to Utrecht line, with frequent sprinter trains putting both cities minutes away. Within the village and the flat countryside around it, the bike rules as everywhere in the Netherlands, and the towpaths along the Vecht are lovely to ride. A cheap second-hand bike plus an OVpay contactless setup covers essentially everything.

  • Breukelen station runs frequent trains to Utrecht (about 15 min) and Amsterdam.
  • Buy a second-hand bike for the village and the flat Vecht-side lanes.
  • Tap on and off NS trains and buses with OVpay contactless.

Nyenrode Business Universiteit is the Netherlands only private university and a highly regarded business and management school, known for small cohorts, close faculty contact and strong ties to Dutch industry. Its programmes are business-focused, often taught in English, and delivered on the historic castle estate. The scale is intimate compared with a big public university, so expect personal attention and a demanding, network-driven culture.

  • Nyenrode specialises in business and management with small, close-knit cohorts.
  • The campus sits on a historic moated castle estate - unlike any other in the country.

As always, it depends on your nationality. EU/EEA/Swiss students need no visa and just register with the local municipality. Non-EU students usually need an entry visa (MVV) and/or a residence permit, but here's the good news: your Dutch host university almost always handles the application for you as the official sponsor, so follow their international office to the letter and start early.

After arrival you'll register at the gemeente (municipality) to get a BSN citizen number, which you need for a bank account and much else, and arrange health insurance. EU students use the EHIC; non-EU students need private cover, and working part-time can trigger a Dutch insurance requirement.

  • EU/EEA/Swiss, no visa, register with the municipality
  • Non-EU, MVV/residence permit, usually arranged by your university
  • Register at the gemeente for a BSN number on arrival
  • Sort health insurance: EHIC (EU) or private cover (non-EU)

Village food options are limited - a few cafes and a supermarket - so most of your eating out happens on quick trips to Utrecht or Amsterdam. Everyday Dutch staples still apply: bitterballen with a beer, fresh bread and cheese, and stroopwafels. The pleasure of Breukelen is more about the setting than the restaurants: coffee by the Vecht, cycling to historic country estates, and campus dining traditions.

  • Stock up and cook locally; head to Utrecht for a proper meal out.
  • Enjoy a coffee or drink along the River Vecht in warmer months.
  • Cycle to the buitenplaatsen (historic country estates) that line the Vecht.

Breukelen is small enough that there are no real districts to choose between - it is the compact village centre, the Nyenrode estate just outside it, and the riverside stretches along the Vecht. The bigger decision is whether to live in the village at all or base yourself in nearby Utrecht. Utrecht neighbourhoods like Lombok or the centre give more life; Breukelen gives peace and proximity to campus.

  • The village centre and the Nyenrode estate are the two poles of local life.
  • Consider Utrecht neighbourhoods (Lombok, the centre) if you want more buzz.
  • Riverside spots along the Vecht are the prettiest places to live.

You are superbly placed for the Netherlands. Amsterdam and Utrecht are both a quick train away, and from Utrecht Central the whole country opens up - Rotterdam, The Hague and beyond within the hour. Close to home, the Loosdrechtse and Vinkeveen lakes are a short bike or bus ride for sailing and swimming, and the moated Muiderslot castle sits nearby. Utrecht itself makes an ideal, underrated base for day trips.

  • Utrecht (15 min) and Amsterdam (20 min) by train, with the rest of the country beyond.
  • The Loosdrechtse Plassen lakes nearby for sailing and summer swimming.
  • Split an NS Group Ticket with friends for cheap weekend train travel.

Sort housing early and decide honestly whether you want village calm or city life, because the commute, though short, shapes your daily rhythm. Get a bike immediately and set up OVpay for the trains you will take constantly. Register for your BSN and a bank account early. And embrace the Nyenrode community - in a place this small and tight-knit, showing up to campus events is how you build your whole network.

  • Decide village-versus-Utrecht early, since the short commute defines your routine.
  • Get a bike and OVpay set up in week one for the constant short train hops.

🏠 Housing

What kind of place was it?

Other

How much was the rent per month?

560

Where was it located?

Campus housing

Would you recommend it?

Actually, living in the camus is mandatory but it is the best experience you can have. Every exchange student live in the same building and you have shared kitchen. It is really good to spend time all together and make a lot of parties all the time.

🍻 Social Life

What are some top bars, clubs, or events you recommend?

There is different bars in the campus. One for the nights during the week, another one for the nights during the weekend and a last one for the day. You can go out in clubs in Amsterdam and Utrecht but the bars of the campus are really worth it and you will enjoy it a lot.

🎓 Uni life at Nyenrode Business Universiteit

Which classes do you recommend… or not?

I think all the classes you can choose are good but if you have the choice don't take business games as it is actually very hard.

Do you have some tips?

Actually, I think my exchange semester couldn't have been better. If you want to meet lots of people and international students, choose Nyenrode. All the students are really nice, and the Dutch are very welcoming to exchange students. They always try to invite you to parties and make you feel at home at the university. The campus is really beautiful and large. You don't need to leave it to enjoy your exchange, because everything is in one place. It's both relaxing and conducive to parties. If I had to choose again, I would of course choose the same university. Living on campus is a life experience that is definitely worth discovering.

✈️ Travel

Best trips to do?

There are many opportunities to travel, including to Prague, Budapest, Copenhagen, or Sweden, but in reality, the best thing for my friends and me was to discover a new Dutch city every week. The Netherlands is small, so you can spend a day in a city and return to university the same evening. We didn't travel much outside the Netherlands because we loved our campus life so much that we wanted to enjoy every moment.

🌆 Breukelen vibe

What do you absolutely need to know to live your best life in Breukelen?

The city is really small so you go there just for your grocery shop. The biggest thing in this city is Nyenrode so you don't have to go a lot in Breukelen center except to go to restaurant with friends for example.

💡 Other Tips

You are only 20 min by train from Amsterdam, so students go there very often, and for shopping, Utrecht is only 10 min by train. If you choose this exchange, you will enjoy it very much and make friends for life. The hardest part after a semester at Nyenrode Business Universiteit is coming back to France.
