Maynooth is Ireland's only true university town: a compact, historic place in County Kildare where the university and its 18th-century college campus are the centre of everything, with Dublin a 40-minute train away. You get intimate campus life plus the capital on tap.

Partners & Perks

Verified housing partners and student perks in Maynooth: no blind deposits, no ghost landlords. Grab one before someone in your group does.

We’re still lining up verified partners in Maynooth. In the meantime, ask the Maynooth group for the housing leads students are using right now.

Maynooth is unique in Ireland: a small, friendly university town rather than a campus lost in a big city, so student life is concentrated and easy to plug into. The university blends a beautiful 18th-century South Campus, shared with the historic St Patrick's College, and a modern North Campus, all within walking distance of the pubs and your digs. Dublin sits just 40 minutes away by train when you want the bright lights.

  • Maynooth University (MU), a young, international university strong in the humanities and social sciences
  • The historic South Campus, shared with St Patrick's College, one of Ireland's oldest colleges
  • A compact town where the university is genuinely the heart of everything

Because everyone lives close, Maynooth's social life is tight-knit and centred on a handful of much-loved pubs and the students' union. The clubs and societies are the backbone of campus life, and Freshers' Week is the moment to dive in. When you want a bigger night, Dublin is a short train ride, so you get the best of both.

  • The Roost and Brady's Clockhouse are the classic Maynooth student pubs
  • Join societies during Freshers' Week; the SU runs events all year on campus
  • Hop the train to Dublin for gigs and clubs, then home in 40 minutes

Maynooth is cheaper than central Dublin, though it sits in the capital's commuter belt, so budget around EUR 1,000 to EUR 1,500 a month with rent. A room in student accommodation or a shared house runs roughly EUR 500 to EUR 800, and a Student Leap Card keeps the Dublin trains affordable. Living in town means you can walk everywhere and skip daily transport.

  • Rooms run EUR 500 to 800 a month; on-campus apartments are convenient but book out
  • A Student Leap Card cuts the commuter-rail and bus fares to Dublin
  • Aldi, Tesco and the SuperValu in Manor Mills cover cheap groceries in town

Maynooth University runs on-campus apartments, the Village and courtyard blocks, that are the easiest option, so apply early through the university. Otherwise, shared houses and digs in town and nearby Leixlip and Celbridge come through Daft.ie and Facebook. Being a small town, good rooms go quickly each September.

  • Apply for MU on-campus apartments early; they are walkable and fill fast
  • Daft.ie and local Facebook groups for shared houses in town and nearby villages
  • Ask the Maynooth group on Studcasa about digs and rooms before term starts

Maynooth is small and flat, so you walk or cycle almost everywhere, with both campuses and the town centre a few minutes apart. The commuter train runs frequently to Dublin's Connolly and Docklands stations in about forty minutes, and Dublin Bus routes serve the town too. A Student Leap Card covers it all at a discount.

  • Walk or cycle; the whole town and both campuses are within a few minutes
  • The Maynooth commuter line reaches Dublin Connolly in about 40 minutes
  • Use a Student Leap Card on the train and Dublin Bus for cheaper fares

Maynooth runs two semesters, roughly September to December and January to May, with a flexible, broad first-year system and strengths in the humanities, social sciences and computer science. Teaching combines lectures, tutorials and continuous assessment, and the small scale means approachable staff. Orientation and Freshers' Week set you up at the start of term.

EU, EEA and Swiss students need no visa and can simply enrol and register locally if staying long term. Non-EU students should check whether their nationality needs an entry visa before travelling, as it varies; many do not for short stays but some always do. Whatever your passport, confirm the rules with your host university and Irish immigration early.

Any non-EU student staying more than 90 days must register with immigration and get an Irish Residence Permit card, booking an appointment through the ISD registration system and paying a fee. Bring proof of enrolment, funds and private health insurance. UK citizens travel and study freely under the Common Travel Area.

  • EU/EEA/Swiss, no visa; register if staying long term
  • Non-EU, check if you need an entry visa for your nationality
  • Staying 90+ days, register for an IRP card via ISD
  • UK citizens, no visa under the Common Travel Area

Everyday life revolves around the town's cafes, pubs and the campus, with the wider Dublin food scene a short train ride away when you want more choice. History is all around, from the ruined Maynooth Castle at the top of the main street to the Georgian grandeur of the South Campus. The Carton House estate on the edge of town is a fine spot for a walk.

  • Grab coffee and lunch along Main Street; Manor Mills has the bigger shops
  • Walk the grounds of Carton House and visit the ruins of Maynooth Castle
  • Head into Dublin by train for markets, museums and a wider food scene

Most students live on or very near campus, in the university apartments or the housing estates just off the main street such as Rail Park. The town centre along Main Street has the pubs and shops. Nearby commuter towns, Leixlip, Celbridge and Kilcock, offer cheaper rooms a short bus or train away.

  • On-campus apartments and the estates off Main Street, closest to lectures
  • Town centre around Main Street for pubs, cafes and daily shops
  • Leixlip and Celbridge nearby for cheaper rooms with a quick commute

Maynooth's position makes travel easy in every direction. Dublin is 40 minutes by train for the city, coast and onward connections, while County Kildare offers the Castletown and Carton estates, the Curragh racecourse and Kildare Village outlet nearby. The Wicklow Mountains and the rest of Ireland are all reachable via Dublin.

  • Dublin in 40 minutes by train for the city and all onward travel
  • Castletown House in Celbridge and Carton House on the doorstep for grand estates and walks
  • Kildare's Curragh, the Irish National Stud and Kildare Village outlet, all close by

Sort on-campus or in-town housing early, as a small town means limited rooms that go fast. Get a Student Leap Card straight away for the Dublin commute, and buy a bike, because Maynooth rewards those who can nip between the two campuses and the town. Make the most of both worlds: intimate campus life during the week, Dublin whenever you fancy it.

  • Book housing early; the town is small and rooms are snapped up by September
  • Get a Student Leap Card and, ideally, a bike for getting around
  • Balance quiet town life with cheap, quick trips into Dublin

🏠 Housing

What kind of place was it?

Coliving / Shared House

How much was the rent per month?

721€

Where was it located?

In Kilcock, 15 minutes away by bus from the university

Would you recommend it?

Yeah because the host mom is nice and it is well located but the room is tiny (there is no kitchen only a microwave and a airfryer). I would probably try somewhere else closer to Dublin.

🍻 Social Life

What are some top bars, clubs, or events you recommend?

There are a lot of events organised by the university or pubs in Maynooth but as we usually do not have our own appartement we couldn't really invite each others. But beside that, this is really cool! Also being closer to Dublin is better for people wanting to party a lot.

🎓 Uni life at University of Maynooth

Which classes do you recommend… or not?

I don't really have any recommendations. Overall the classes I had there were quite boring as teachers were usually reading their slides. However I really appreciated the module 'Intellectual Property Law' which was the most interesting.

Do you have some tips?

The university is really beautiful, everything regarding registration etc. is really easy as well they accompany us in every steps so I didn't really have to worry about it during my journey there. And yeah the campus is gorgeous really!! I would definetly choose to come again if I could I really enjoyed my semester there and met wonderful people as well!!

✈️ Travel

Best trips to do?

You can do plenty of different trips especially if you register to the ones proposed by ESN Ireland. Regarding the best trips it is obvious that if you come here you have to visit countries next to Ireland (Northern Ireland, England, Scotland etc.) because it is cheaper. And for the trips within the country I really appreciated going to Glendalough wisiting the Connemara and I loved Sligo as well. But there are so many other trips to do as well!

🌆 Maynooth vibe

What do you absolutely need to know to live your best life in Maynooth?

Maynooth is quite a small town so it is quick to get bored but it's 40 minutes away from Dublin by bus. There are a bunch of pubs which are really cool as well and which organise lots of things like general knowledge quizzes etc. and where you can dance as well!!

💡 Other Tips

You should definitely give it a try because you'll love it!!
