Lille is the friendly capital of the French north - Flemish at heart, wrapped around a gorgeous old town, and stuffed with students. With Brussels, Paris and London all around an hour away by train, it is the best-connected city on this list.

Partners & Perks

Verified housing partners and student perks in Lille: no blind deposits, no ghost landlords. Grab one before someone in your group does.

We’re still lining up verified partners in Lille. In the meantime, ask the Lille group for the housing leads students are using right now.

Lille is one of France biggest and warmest student cities, sitting right on the Belgian border where French and Flemish cultures blur. The old town is a picture of gabled brick houses, the beer and estaminet culture is a joy, and locals are famously welcoming. Above all it is a transport hub: Brussels, Paris and London are all roughly an hour away by fast train.

  • One of France largest student populations, and famously sociable people.
  • Brussels in 35 minutes, Paris in an hour, London in 80 minutes by train.
  • The September Braderie de Lille is Europe biggest flea market - do not miss it.

Student life is loud and cheap in the best way. The bars of Vieux-Lille and the legendary Rue de la Soif around Rue Solferino heave at weekends, and the Flemish estaminets pour local beer late into the night. The Wazemmes district adds a grittier, multicultural energy. ESN Lille and the big schools keep the international scene busy from the first week.

  • Rue de la Soif (around Rue Solferino) is the classic wall-to-wall student bar street.
  • Try a proper estaminet like Chez la Vieille for beer and Flemish comfort food.
  • Follow ESN Lille for welcome weeks, trips and tandem language nights.

Lille is one of the cheaper large French cities - budget roughly 800 to 1,150 euros a month. Shared rooms run 350 to 480 euros, among the best value in urban France, and APL applies. Beer and moules-frites are affordable, markets like Wazemmes are cheap, and CROUS canteens serve full meals at around 3.30 euros.

  • Colocation rooms are cheap for a big city, often 350 to 480 euros; claim APL via caf.fr.
  • The Ilevia youth transit pass beats single tickets - sort it in your first week.
  • Do your weekly shop at Wazemmes market (Sunday morning is the big one).

Rooms are relatively affordable but still go quickly each September, so start early. CROUS residences and private colocations are the main routes; search leboncoin and La Carte des Colocs. Vauban and Moulins put you near the universities and the Catho, Wazemmes is cheap and lively, and Vieux-Lille is pricier but central. Use the free Visale guarantee if you have no French garant.

  • Vauban and Moulins are the student districts near the main campuses.
  • Wazemmes for cheap rooms and a buzzing market on your doorstep.
  • Search leboncoin and La Carte des Colocs; get Visale at visale.fr, and the Studcasa Lille group flags rooms between intakes.

Lille Ilevia network runs the world first fully automated metro (two VAL lines), plus two tram lines and buses, and it is quick and reliable. The centre is compact and walkable, with V Lille bikes for the rest. The science campus sits out at Villeneuve-d Ascq, an easy metro ride east. Under-26s get a discounted transit pass.

  • Metro line 1 runs out to the Cite Scientifique campus at Villeneuve-d Ascq.
  • Get the Ilevia youth pass (around 30 euros a month) rather than 1.70 euro single tickets.
  • V Lille bikes are cheap and cover the flat, compact centre well.

The Universite de Lille is one of France largest, spread across the Cite Scientifique (science and engineering) at Villeneuve-d Ascq, Pont-de-Bois (humanities) and Moulins (law and health). Alongside it sit heavyweight grandes ecoles: EDHEC and IESEG for business, Centrale Lille for engineering, and Sciences Po Lille. Teaching follows the CM-and-TD format with well-staffed international offices.

  • Science and engineering are based at the Cite Scientifique in Villeneuve-d Ascq.
  • EDHEC and IESEG run large, English-friendly international programmes.

What you need depends entirely on your nationality. EU/EEA/Swiss students need no visa and can just enrol. Non-EU students on an exchange over 90 days apply for a VLS-TS student long-stay visa before arriving, then validate it online within three months and pay a small OFII tax; under 90 days you may only need a short-stay Schengen visa or none at all.

Budget time for the admin marathon: you will want a French bank account, proof of accommodation, health cover (EHIC for Europeans, or enrolment in French social security), and civil-liability insurance. Book prefecture and OFII steps the moment you can, because slots vanish.

  • EU/EEA/Swiss, no visa, just enrol
  • Non-EU, over 90 days, VLS-TS long-stay student visa, validated online after arrival
  • Proof of ~€615/month funds usually required
  • Get civil-liability insurance (assurance responsabilite civile) before term

The food here is proudly northern and Flemish: moules-frites (mussels and chips), the slow-cooked beef carbonnade flamande, cheesy Welsh, and pungent maroilles cheese. Estaminets serve it all with local beer. Sunday morning at Wazemmes market is a ritual - a sprawling covered and open-air market with food from across the world at student prices.

  • Order moules-frites at least once - a whole tonne gets eaten during the Braderie.
  • Wazemmes market (best on Sunday) for cheap global street food and produce.
  • Try Welsh and carbonnade flamande in an estaminet on a cold evening.

Vieux-Lille is the beautiful, slightly upscale old town of Flemish facades and boutiques. Wazemmes is its multicultural counterpoint - cheaper, younger and full of life around its market. Vauban and Moulins are the student districts by the universities, while Euralille around the stations is the modern business and shopping quarter.

  • Vieux-Lille for the postcard streets and the best bars (if pricier rooms).
  • Wazemmes for value, diversity and market life.
  • Vauban and Moulins to be walking distance from campus.

Nowhere on this list travels better. Brussels is 35 minutes by train, the medieval canals of Bruges and Ghent are just beyond, Paris is an hour by TGV, and London is 80 minutes by Eurostar. Amsterdam is under three hours. Even a spontaneous day trip across the border into Belgium for beer and chips is entirely doable.

  • Brussels in 35 minutes and Bruges in about 75 - easy Belgian day trips.
  • Paris in an hour by TGV; London in 80 minutes by Eurostar.
  • Book TER and TGV tickets early via SNCF Connect for the cheap fares.

Time your arrival around the September Braderie if you can - the whole city becomes a giant flea market and mussel feast for a weekend. Sort bank, APL and SIM early as everywhere in France. And pack for the weather: the north is greyer and wetter than the south, so a proper coat and umbrella earn their keep.

  • Plan for the Braderie de Lille on the first weekend of September - Europe biggest flea market.
  • Bring rain gear; the northern climate is cooler and wetter than southern France.

🏠 Housing

What kind of place was it?

Student Residence

How much was the rent per month?

850

Where was it located?

20 minutes walking from the center

Would you recommend it?

It was okay. Definitely not just a student residence so a lot of people came in and out every day which sometimes felt a little bit sketchy. Besides having my own bathroom and kitchen don’t think it was worth the money I spent. Not terrible but could be better.

🍻 Social Life

What are some top bars, clubs, or events you recommend?

Slalom, Temple’s bar, most bars in the center are really good

🎓 Uni life at sciences po lille

Which classes do you recommend… or not?

I really liked Political Protest and French Politics

Do you have some tips?

The campus was very cool. Registration was also easy and yes I would pick the same uni again without doubt

✈️ Travel

Best trips to do?

From Lille to catch cheap flights you take a bus to Charleroi Airport in Brussels which is about 3 hours away and from there you can go everywhere in Europe pretty much. I went to Budapest and Vienna and definitely recommend very beautiful and very cheap trips. Also going to other parts in France is really cool like Bordeaux which I am going to because another exchange friend is there. Oh and a day trip to Paris is also really affordable and nice even if just for a night out which I did. Took the bus at 5 pm on a saturday and came back at 9am on a Sunday. Tough at time but definitely an experience I recommend! Very fun!

🌆 Lille vibe

What do you absolutely need to know to live your best life in Lille?

Definitely a student city. Calm during the day and very alive at night. Perfect for studying abroad. Also don’t believe it is as dangerous as people put out to be. I never walked home alone after a night out of course but with friends I would say it is totally okay.
