Grenoble sits in a bowl of three mountain ranges - you can be on a ski slope 30 minutes after your last lecture. It is France science and engineering capital, flat, bike-mad and made for anyone who wants the Alps on their doorstep.

Partners & Perks

Verified housing partners and student perks in Grenoble: no blind deposits, no ghost landlords. Grab one before someone in your group does.

We’re still lining up verified partners in Grenoble. In the meantime, ask the Grenoble group for the housing leads students are using right now.

Grenoble is the outdoors student dream: ringed by the Vercors, Chartreuse and Belledonne massifs, with ski resorts and hiking trails within half an hour. It is also a scientific powerhouse - one of Europe densest concentrations of research labs and tech - anchored by a large, well-regarded university. Flat, walkable and bike-friendly, it pairs serious study with genuinely epic weekends.

  • Three mountain ranges on the doorstep; Chamrousse ski resort is 30 minutes away.
  • A top European hub for physics, engineering and tech research.
  • One of France flattest, most cycle-friendly cities.

Student life mixes bar nights with mountain days. The hyper-centre around Place Saint-Andre and Place Notre-Dame is dense with cheap bars, and the Berriat district adds a more alternative scene. But the real culture here is the weekend exodus to the slopes and trails - join a university outdoor club and you will never be short of company. ESN Grenoble runs a packed international programme.

  • Bars cluster around Place Saint-Andre and Place Notre-Dame in the old centre.
  • Join a university ski or mountaineering club - it is the social glue here.
  • Follow ESN Grenoble for trips, welcome weeks and cheap ski outings.

Grenoble is good value and sits mid-band - budget roughly 800 to 1,150 euros a month, plus whatever your ski habit costs. Shared rooms run 370 to 500 euros, APL applies, and cycling everywhere keeps transport cheap. CROUS canteens on the Saint-Martin-d Heres campus serve full meals at around 3.30 euros. The main variable is how many lift passes you buy.

  • Colocation rooms typically 370 to 500 euros; claim APL via caf.fr.
  • A Metrovelo bike hire cuts transport costs to almost nothing in this flat city.
  • Budget separately for ski passes; student rates and the regional youth card help.

Rooms are reasonably priced but tight in September. CROUS residences sit right by the Domaine Universitaire campus in Saint-Martin-d Heres; private colocations appear on leboncoin and La Carte des Colocs. The hyper-centre is lively, Berriat and Championnet are up-and-coming, and the campus itself is convenient but quieter. Use the free Visale guarantee if you have no French garant.

  • The Domaine Universitaire in Saint-Martin-d Heres has the cheapest campus housing.
  • Berriat/Saint-Bruno and Championnet for value near the centre.
  • Search leboncoin and La Carte des Colocs; the Studcasa Grenoble group posts rooms between intakes.

Grenoble is a cycling city first - flat, compact and threaded with bike lanes, so a Metrovelo hire bike is the quickest way around. On top of that, five tram lines and a bus network (TAG) cover the wider area, including the Saint-Martin-d Heres campus. For the view, ride the Bulles cable car up to the Bastille fort. Under-26s get a discounted transit pass.

  • Hire a Metrovelo long-term - cycling beats the tram for most city trips.
  • Tram lines B and C serve the university campus at Saint-Martin-d Heres.
  • Take the telepherique (the Bulles) up to the Bastille for the best city-and-mountains view.

Universite Grenoble Alpes (UGA) is a large, research-intensive university strong in science, engineering and social sciences, formed from a merger of the city older institutions. Around it sit Grenoble INP and ENSIMAG for engineering, GEM for business and Sciences Po Grenoble. The campus is a green, self-contained domain east of the city. Teaching uses the standard CM-and-TD format.

  • UGA and Grenoble INP put the city among Europe leading science and tech campuses.
  • Most teaching is on the leafy Domaine Universitaire in Saint-Martin-d Heres.

What you need depends entirely on your nationality. EU/EEA/Swiss students need no visa and can just enrol. Non-EU students on an exchange over 90 days apply for a VLS-TS student long-stay visa before arriving, then validate it online within three months and pay a small OFII tax; under 90 days you may only need a short-stay Schengen visa or none at all.

Budget time for the admin marathon: you will want a French bank account, proof of accommodation, health cover (EHIC for Europeans, or enrolment in French social security), and civil-liability insurance. Book prefecture and OFII steps the moment you can, because slots vanish.

  • EU/EEA/Swiss, no visa, just enrol
  • Non-EU, over 90 days, VLS-TS long-stay student visa, validated online after arrival
  • Proof of ~€615/month funds usually required
  • Get civil-liability insurance (assurance responsabilite civile) before term

Alpine and Dauphine cooking rules here: creamy gratin dauphinois, ravioles du Dauphine, and cheeses like Saint-Marcellin and Bleu du Vercors. The region walnuts carry an AOC label, and the luminous green Chartreuse liqueur is made by monks just up the valley. Graze the covered Marche de l Estacade or the lively Saint-Bruno market for local produce.

  • Try gratin dauphinois and ravioles du Dauphine, the local comfort classics.
  • Sample (responsibly) the green Chartreuse liqueur made by nearby monks.
  • Shop the Saint-Bruno market or the covered Marche de l Estacade.

The hyper-centre around Place Grenette and Place Notre-Dame is the walkable, bar-filled heart. Championnet and Ile Verte are calmer and residential, Berriat/Saint-Bruno is the up-and-coming creative quarter with a great market, and the Domaine Universitaire in Saint-Martin-d Heres is the student campus zone east of the river.

  • Hyper-centre for nightlife and everything on foot.
  • Berriat/Saint-Bruno for a creative, up-and-coming feel and a good market.
  • Saint-Martin-d Heres for cheap rooms right by campus.

The mountains are the main event - Chamrousse, Les 7 Laux, the Alpe d Huez and Les 2 Alpes are all within an hour or two for skiing and summer hiking. Beyond the peaks, Lyon is 1h20 by train, Annecy under two hours, and Geneva and Turin reachable for longer weekends. Grab the regional youth rail card if you travel often.

  • Chamrousse (30 min) for quick ski days; Les 2 Alpes and Alpe d Huez a bit further.
  • Lyon in 1h20 and Annecy under two hours by train.
  • Turin, in Italy, is reachable in about three hours for a longer trip.

Bring or buy proper kit - walking boots and a warm jacket transform your semester here. Sort bank, APL and SIM early, and get a bike on day one. Watch the winter air: Grenoble sits in a valley and can trap pollution, so check the forecast and, more happily, escape upward to the mountains whenever the city feels stuffy.

  • Get a Metrovelo bike and warm outdoor kit in your first week.
  • Buy an Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes youth rail card if you plan regular ski and train trips.

🏠 Housing

What kind of place was it?

Airbnb

How much was the rent per month?

700

Where was it located?

san bruno :(

Would you recommend it?

honestly it was fine for me but I didnt have previous support at all so I basically had to settle. The zone was not very good but it was close to my university, and it was a cute room with an awesome balcony (which I super recomment because you can see the mountains), but the price was absurd. I know other people who also had to get an airbnb and paid more for a bit better apartment, so if you have an extense budget it is a good option, though I think it is better to go any oher way.

🍻 Social Life

What are some top bars, clubs, or events you recommend?

Champollion, the bronx, and barberousse are top bars, and astro rocks is a sick club.

🎓 Uni life at GEM

Which classes do you recommend… or not?

mmmmm honestly not the innovation master, but I know other masters are cool.

Do you have some tips?

hot take but i didnt like the uni, I did like the people tho. enough said.

✈️ Travel

Best trips to do?

loved turin the most, and geneva is close but expensive (obviously). The best part is going to the mountains to see the snow, even more if you ski or hike, and I personally recomment renting a car and just going to any and all the close by little towns, like annecy, chamonix, perouges, etc. Also, when in doubt, Lyon is absolutely amazing, and to be fair staying in grenoble some weekends can also be very fun.

🌆 Grenoble vibe

What do you absolutely need to know to live your best life in Grenoble?

It can be dangerous, specially for a girl alone, but not so much like other people might think. maybe keep to yourself in strange places, and try to always have company, but also mantain always an open space to meet new people! the local drinks and food are very cosy and amazing (but make sure to subscribe to a gym to burn it off, I recommend feel sport or on air) and all the little markets you find will definitely steal your heart.
