The Vaasa TL;DR

Vaasa is a sunny, bilingual city on Finland's west coast, where Finnish and Swedish mix and the UNESCO-listed Kvarken Archipelago sits on the doorstep. Several universities pack it with students, and Sweden is a short ferry across the gulf.

Partners & Perks

Verified housing partners and student perks in Vaasa: no blind deposits, no ghost landlords. Grab one before someone in your group does.

We’re still lining up verified partners in Vaasa. In the meantime, ask the Vaasa group for the housing leads students are using right now.

Vaasa is unusually international for its size: bilingual in Finnish and Swedish, home to a cluster of universities, and built around Northern Europe's biggest energy-technology hub. It claims the most sunshine hours in Finland, faces Sweden across the Gulf of Bothnia, and looks out on the Kvarken Archipelago, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Student life concentrates on the island of Palosaari.

  • University of Vaasa, strong in business, energy and administration, on the Palosaari waterfront
  • Abo Akademi and Novia bring Swedish-language teaching; VAMK and Hanken add more options
  • A compact, bilingual city with a big student share and an energy-tech focus

Student life gathers on Palosaari island, where the campuses and much of the student housing sit, with the bilingual mix giving events a Finnish-Swedish flavour. The usual haalarit overalls and sitsit dinners run through the student unions, and Vappu is the highlight of spring. The waterfront and archipelago shape the social calendar in summer.

  • Palosaari island is the student hub, with campus bars and events
  • Join the University of Vaasa or Novia student unions; sitsit and haalarit culture are strong
  • Fontana and the market-square bars for a night out in the compact centre

Vaasa is affordable by Finnish standards, so budget around EUR 700 to EUR 1,000 a month including rent. A student room through VOAS runs roughly EUR 300 to EUR 450, and the small, flat layout means a bike covers everything. Student lunches for a few euros keep eating cheap.

  • A VOAS student room is EUR 300 to 450 a month, mostly on or near Palosaari
  • Student lunches cost about EUR 3 with your card at the campus restaurants
  • Lidl and the Kauppatori market square keep grocery costs low

VOAS, the Vaasa student housing foundation, runs the affordable flats, many on Palosaari beside the campuses, and is the obvious first choice. Apply as soon as you are accepted. Private rooms appear on Vuokraovi and Facebook, but student housing is cheaper and better placed.

  • Apply to VOAS early; its Palosaari flats sit right by campus
  • Vuokraovi.com and Vaasa housing Facebook groups for the private market
  • Ask the Vaasa group on Studcasa about rooms opening up between terms

Vaasa is small and flat, so walking and cycling handle most journeys, with Palosaari a short ride from the centre. Local buses cover longer trips, and a second-hand bike is the best investment you can make. The train station and the Wasaline ferry terminal to Sweden are both central.

  • Buy a second-hand bike; the compact, flat city is ideal for cycling
  • Local buses fill in for winter and outlying areas, with student fares
  • The central station links trains south via Seinajoki; the ferry terminal is nearby

The universities run autumn and spring terms in periods, September to December and January to May, with a strongly bilingual, international feel. Teaching is informal and independent, widely available in English, with the University of Vaasa known for business and energy. Expect group work and light contact hours.

What you need depends entirely on your passport. EU and EEA students need no visa or residence permit; you just register your right of residence with Migri if you stay over three months, which is quick and cheap. That is the whole story for most European exchange students.

Everyone else (non-EU) applies for a student residence permit through Migri before arrival, showing your acceptance letter, proof of funds (around 560 euros a month, roughly 6,720 euros a year), and health insurance. Apply online, book a biometrics appointment at a Finnish mission or VFS, and start early because processing can take one to three months in peak season. Once here, register your address with the DVV to get things running.

  • EU/EEA: no permit, just register with Migri if staying over 90 days
  • Non-EU: student residence permit via Migri, apply before you travel
  • Proof of funds: about €560/month (~€6,720/year)
  • Book biometrics early; processing can take 1–3 months

Vaasa's food culture reflects its bilingual, coastal setting, from Ostrobothnian home cooking to archipelago fish sold at the market square. The Swedish influence runs deep, and summer life moves outdoors to the waterfront and the islands. Sauna and sea swimming are part of the weekly rhythm.

  • Shop the Kauppatori market square and hall for local fish and produce
  • Try Ostrobothnian specialities and the region's Swedish-Finnish baking
  • Swim and sauna at the Kvarken waterfront through the warmer months

Palosaari island is the student heart, home to the campuses and much of the housing; the city centre around the market square has the shops and nightlife; Voyrinkaupunki is a pretty older district close in. Gerby and Sundom stretch out toward the archipelago for a quieter, greener base.

  • Palosaari, the island campus district where most students live
  • City centre, walkable to the market square, station and bars
  • Voyrinkaupunki, a charming central district a short walk from campus

Vaasa's trump card is the Kvarken Archipelago, Finland's only natural UNESCO World Heritage site, reached by the country's longest bridge at Replot. Across the gulf, the Wasaline ferry sails to Umea in Sweden in around four hours. Seinajoki and Tampere are easy train trips inland.

  • Kvarken Archipelago and Replot bridge, a short drive for UNESCO-listed nature
  • Umea, Sweden by the Wasaline ferry in about 4 hours
  • Tampere in roughly 2.5 hours by train, Helsinki in about 3.5

Register your student status for bus fares and cheap campus lunches straight away. A bit of Swedish goes a long way here, as the region is strongly bilingual and locals appreciate it. Make the most of the sunshine and the archipelago in early autumn, and get proper winter gear before the coast turns cold and windy.

  • Sort your student transport and lunch discounts in week one
  • Learn a few Swedish phrases as well as Finnish; the region uses both
  • Get a bike now and warm, windproof layers before winter

🎓 Uni life at UNIVERSITY OF VAASA

Which classes do you recommend… or not?

The courses are quite easy, and the exams are either taken at home or at the university, but they are often multiple-choice tests. I took the following courses: Energy Economics and Sustainable Growth, Essentials of Digital Marketing and Online Platforms, International Business Operation Modes, International Management, Leading People, and Strategic Business Development

Do you have some tips?

Yes, the campus is really nice : modern buildings, a very clean environment and a beautiful location right by the water. It feels calm and safe. Registration was very easy.

✈️ Travel

Best trips to do?

We travelled a lot during our exchange. Thanks to ESN Vaasa (a non-profit international student organisation that arranges trips for exchange students), we were able to visit Sweden, Lapland, and the Lofoten Islands in Norway. We also travelled on our own to Denmark and Helsinki. There’s also the option to rent beautiful lakeside villas not far from Vaasa, which is perfect for weekend trips with friends.

🌆 Vaasa vibe

What do you absolutely need to know to live your best life in Vaasa?

The VOAS Linna residence is the best option, as it brings together most exchange students. It’s important to apply early because spots fill up very quickly. The electric scooter subscription is very useful and practical, especially since the student residence is a bit far from everything. The cost of living in Finland is relatively similar to France (slightly more expensive). The city is extremely safe and very calm.
