Tallinn is a compact Baltic capital where a fairy-tale medieval old town meets Europe's most digital society, giving exchange students cobblestones, start-up energy and Helsinki just a ferry ride away.

Partners & Perks

Verified housing partners and student perks in Tallinn: no blind deposits, no ghost landlords. Grab one before someone in your group does.

We’re still lining up verified partners in Tallinn. In the meantime, ask the Tallinn group for the housing leads students are using right now.

Estonia's capital is one of Europe's best-kept secrets: a walkable, safe and affordable city with a UNESCO-listed medieval core and a reputation as the most digital nation on earth. English is widely spoken among young people, so you'll settle in fast, and the ferry to Helsinki opens up Scandinavia. It offers Nordic quality of life at Baltic prices.

  • A postcard-perfect medieval old town paired with a booming tech and start-up scene
  • Cheaper than the Nordics next door, with Helsinki only a two-hour ferry away

Student life splits between the medieval Old Town's bars and the creative hub of Telliskivi in hipster Kalamaja, both buzzing with young Estonians and internationals. Sauna culture is real, the craft-beer scene is strong, and summer brings festivals and near-endless daylight. Winters are dark, so locals lean into cosy cafés and student parties.

  • Spend evenings at Telliskivi Creative City in Kalamaja, packed with bars, street food and gigs
  • Embrace the sauna and the summer festival season, from city days to open-air concerts
  • Ask the Tallinn Studcasa group where the international student nights and ESN events are happening

Tallinn is affordable for a European capital, with €700–1,100 a month covering rent, food and going out. It uses the euro, so there's no currency faff, and the whole country is close to cashless. Cooking with produce from Balti Jaama Turg keeps costs down, while eating out is cheaper than in Western Europe.

  • A room in a shared flat runs roughly €300–500 a month, more in the Old Town
  • Shop at Balti Jaama Turg market by the station for cheap fresh produce
  • Go cashless, as cards and phones are accepted literally everywhere

Most students rent rooms in shared flats in Kalamaja, the city centre (Kesklinn) or near the universities, while TalTech offers dormitories out in Mustamäe. The market moves quickly, so line something up before you arrive and always view first, even if only by video call.

  • Search KV.ee and City24.ee, Estonia's main property portals, plus student Facebook groups
  • Kalamaja and the centre are the most popular, walkable areas, while Mustamäe is cheaper and near TalTech
  • Ask in the Tallinn Studcasa group, as students often sublet rooms at semester's end

Public transport is excellent and, uniquely, free for registered Tallinn residents, so register your address to ride the trams, buses and trolleybuses for nothing. Otherwise, tap a green Ühiskaart. Bolt, the ride-hailing app born in Tallinn, is cheap for taxis and e-scooters, and the flat centre is very walkable.

  • Register your residence to ride all Tallinn public transport free, or buy an Ühiskaart otherwise
  • Use Bolt, the local app, for cheap taxis and e-scooters
  • Walk or cycle the compact centre, and take the Elron train for day trips

Tallinn's main institutions are Tallinn University (TLÜ), the tech-focused Tallinn University of Technology (TalTech) in Mustamäe, and the Estonian Academy of Arts (EKA). Many programmes and exchange courses are taught in English. Semesters run September to January and February to June.

  • TalTech leads for engineering and IT, while Tallinn University is stronger in humanities and social sciences
  • A wide range of courses is taught in English, so language is rarely a barrier

Estonia is an EU and Schengen member, so it comes down to your nationality. EU/EEA citizens can move freely and simply register their residence at the local government office within a few months of arriving, receiving an Estonian ID code that unlocks the country's famous digital services.

Everyone else, including UK, US, Canadian and Australian students, needs either a long-stay D-visa or a temporary residence permit for study, arranged through an Estonian embassy or the Police and Border Guard Board. Sort proof of funds and health insurance early, and use the D-visa route if your stay is a single semester.

  • EU/EEA, free movement; register residence for an ID code
  • Non-EU, long-stay D-visa or study residence permit via the Police and Border Guard Board
  • Get an Estonian ID code early; it unlocks the e-services

Estonian food is hearty and seasonal, from black rye bread and marinated herring to sprats and, at Christmas, blood sausage, alongside a thriving new-Nordic dining scene. This is a proudly digital society where you'll pay, park and sign contracts by phone. Balti Jaama Turg is the best window into everyday food culture.

  • Try black bread, herring and kohuke curd snacks, and brave verivorst blood sausage in winter
  • Browse Balti Jaama Turg for street food, produce and vintage finds
  • Sample the new-Nordic restaurants around Telliskivi and the Rotermann Quarter

Vanalinn, the medieval Old Town, is beautiful but touristy and pricey. Kalamaja, with its wooden houses and the Telliskivi hub, is the hip favourite, Kadriorg is leafy and elegant around its palace and park, and Mustamäe and Õismäe are cheaper Soviet-era districts near TalTech.

  • Kalamaja for wooden-house charm, Telliskivi and a young crowd
  • Kesklinn (centre) or Kadriorg for convenience and green space
  • Mustamäe for lower rents beside the TalTech campus

Tallinn is a springboard. The ferry to Helsinki takes about two hours across the gulf, the student city of Tartu is two hours south, and Lahemaa National Park's bogs and manor houses are an hour away. Further afield, buses reach Riga in four hours and the beach town of Pärnu in two.

  • Take a Tallink or Eckerö ferry to Helsinki for a day in Finland (about two hours)
  • Bus or train to Tartu for its university-town buzz, or to Pärnu's summer beaches
  • Explore Lahemaa National Park's bog trails and manor houses, an hour from the city

Register your Estonian residence early to unlock free public transport and the country's slick e-services. Prepare for the dark winters by leaning into sauna, cosy cafés and midwinter festivals, then enjoy the near-midnight sun in June. English works widely, but a few Estonian words go a long way.

  • Register your address to ride public transport free and access Estonia's e-services
  • Buy a good coat and lean into sauna and café culture through the dark winter
  • Learn a little Estonian, even though most young people speak fluent English

What kind of place was it?

Classic Apartment

How much was the rent per month?

600

Very close to the center of the city and to the school

Would you recommend it?

The location was perfect but I think you can find something cheaper, because the friends I met during my erasmus found also nice apartments but with lower rents.

🍻 Social Life

What are some top bars, clubs, or events you recommend?

A lot of parties and events organized by esn tallinn. Every wednesday erasmus students were going to the nightclub Munt.

🎓 Uni life at Estonian business school

Which classes do you recommend… or not?

Macroeconomics was more difficult that I thought it would be. Overall the courses and the final exams were easy, but there is often home assignments to do.

Do you have some tips?

The campus is small and the registration was easy. I would say that it is a chill atmosphere, no pressure on the students.

✈️ Travel

🏠 Housing

What kind of place was it?

Coliving / Shared House

How much was the rent per month?

Around 440€/ month

Where was it located?

Kesklinn, 10min walking from the city center

Would you recommend it?

It was nice because affordable price, next to my school and the city center. A lot of space and the landlord was always available.

🍻 Social Life

What are some top bars, clubs, or events you recommend?

To go party I would recommend CLUB Munt, a lot of international students in there. Same for the Gruuv if you want to go to a bar.

🎓 Uni life at Estonian Business School

Which classes do you recommend… or not?

I woud recommend Strategic Marketing and Strategic Management because even though it's not my favourite subjects to study, teachers are really motivating and propose a lot of differents tasks and group activity. Moreover, it's pretty easy to get a good grade!

Do you have some tips?

Little campus but will be way more impressive in 2027. All the online platforms are easy to use to register and the coordinators are available and attentive.

✈️ Travel

Best trips to do?

It's easy to go to visit another capital city from Tallinn. By bus or ferry you can go to Riga or Vilnius and it's not too expensive to travel with LuxExpress or FlixBus. These cities are beautiful and I was amazed to discover them.

🌆 Tallinn vibe

What do you absolutely need to know to live your best life in Tallinn?

Starting from the end of October you don't really see the sun anymore so it's important to take vitamins with you! Transports are free for citizens in Tallinn so it's a really good point. The price of food is pretty much the same as in France (except for a few things ;less expensive). Don't rush to find your appartment, there are more appartments than students who want to find one so you can get one for not so much.

600€

Where was it located?

In Tallinn, 5min by foot from EBS

Would you recommend it?

The appartment was very nice and this is good if you have a rommate. Quite expensive tho. I think that the best option for international students is "Larsen Houses" which are student residences.

🍻 Social Life

What are some top bars, clubs, or events you recommend?

Night life in Tallinn is quite calm. Deffinetely not the best place to party. The best bar is Gruuv. Best clubs are Münt, Paparazzi and club Hollywood.

🎓 Uni life at Estonian Business School

Which classes do you recommend… or not?

I recommand Finance classes and marketing if you want to be with some internationals and Entrepreneurship if you want to be with only Estonioan students.

Do you have some tips?

The school is very small so easy to find your way everywhere. Not a lot of International. Estonians are cold first but quite friendly if you go talk to them.

✈️ Travel

Best trips to do?

You can fly in a lot of places for cheap from Tallinn. You can take a boat for 20€ to go to Helsinki. With flixbus you can visit the rest of Estonia, and even Riga and Vilnius. You can even go to Saint Petersburg by Bus for Tallinn.

🌆 Tallinn vibe

What do you absolutely need to know to live your best life in Tallinn?

The transport system is quite nice in Tallinn, if you register as a student in Estonia bus are free. The cost of living is close to France, little bit cheaper but not a big difference. The city is very safe absolutely no crime at all. Weather is a big thing in Tallinn, grey most of the time outside of summer, rain quite often and winter is snow all the time and you only see the sun 4/5 hours a day. The food is interesting, some soup, pasta and some original meats as bear, deer etc.
