Tianjin is a big port city on Beijing's doorstep, best known for its European concession-era streets, riverside promenades and quick, self-deprecating local humour. It offers real city life at lower prices than the capital, just half an hour away.

Partners & Perks

Tianjin gives you the amenities of a major city, from strong universities to a growing metro and grand colonial architecture, while sitting 30 minutes from Beijing by high-speed rail. It is cheaper and less frantic than the capital, with a distinctive food culture and a walkable, river-focused centre. Winters are cold, and the city lacks Beijing's star sights, but that keeps the crowds and prices down.

  • Beijing is only 30 minutes away by high-speed rail for weekends and day trips.
  • The Five Great Avenues (Wudadao) preserve a whole district of 1920s European villas.

Nankai and Tianjin University sit side by side, so campus social life is well linked, and evenings gather along the Haihe River. Tianjin is also the home of Chinese cross-talk comedy.

  • Evenings gather along the Haihe River, the Italian Style Street bars and the malls of Binjiang Road.
  • Nankai and Tianjin University sit next to each other, so campus social life is well linked.
  • Ask the Tianjin group on Studcasa which student clubs are worth joining.

Tianjin is noticeably cheaper than neighbouring Beijing. Budget roughly 4,000 to 6,500 yuan a month (about 520 to 850 euros) all in.

  • Canteen meals run 12-20 yuan; a famous goubuli bun or a jianbing breakfast is only a few yuan.
  • A shared room near Nankai runs roughly 1,800-3,000 yuan a month.
  • Set up Alipay and WeChat Pay before arriving, as cash is rarely used.

University dorms in the Nankai district are the easy default, with shared flats a common upgrade. Private listings are mostly in Chinese.

  • University dorms are the easy default, mostly in the Nankai district.
  • For flats, Lianjia lists managed rooms across Nankai and Heping, largely in Chinese.

Tianjin's metro covers the centre and campuses, and constant high-speed trains make Beijing feel like a suburb. Getting around is cheap and simple.

  • Pay for the Tianjin Metro by QR in Alipay; it reaches the centre and the campuses.
  • High-speed trains to Beijing leave constantly from Tianjin and Tianjin South stations.
  • Fares start at 2 yuan, and shared bikes fill the gaps around campus.

Tianjin holds two of China's most historic universities, side by side and both nationally respected. Exchange programmes are well established, especially in the sciences and engineering.

  • Nankai University is one of China's most respected, strong in economics and the sciences.
  • Tianjin University, the country's oldest, leads on engineering.

For a full semester you need an X1 student visa; anything under 180 days uses the X2. Your host university sends an admission letter plus a JW201 or JW202 form, and you take both to a Chinese embassy or visa centre back home. Requirements and fees swing a lot by nationality, so check your own local embassy rather than trusting a mate from another country.

The bit people forget: an X1 visa only gets you in the door. Within 30 days of landing you must convert it into a residence permit at the local Public Security Bureau (Entry-Exit office), which means a health check and passport photos. Miss the deadline and the fines are real.

  • X1 visa, stays over 180 days, needs JW202 + admission letter
  • Residence permit, apply within 30 days at the local PSB
  • Medical exam, required for the permit, budget €50–80
  • Rules vary by nationality, always check your own embassy

Tianjin takes its snacks seriously, and it is the birthplace of the breakfast crepe now eaten across China. The concession streets make everyday walking a pleasure.

  • Tianjin is the birthplace of jianbing guozi, so eat one from a street cart for breakfast.
  • Try goubuli steamed buns and buy twisted mahua fritters from Guifaxiang.
  • Ancient Culture Street (Guwenhua Jie) is the touristy but tasty spot for local snacks.

Heping holds the concession streets and shopping, Nankai is the student and old-culture district, and the Haihe riverfront is the place to stroll. All are metro-linked.

  • Heping district holds the concession-era streets, the Five Great Avenues and the main shopping.
  • Nankai, around the universities and Ancient Culture Street, is the classic student area.
  • Hexi and the Haihe riverfront are pleasant, modern places to walk.

With Beijing 30 minutes away and its own stretch of the Great Wall, Tianjin travels well. It even makes a cheap base for exploring the capital.

  • Beijing and its sights are just 30 minutes away by fast train.
  • Tianjin has its own quieter stretch of the Great Wall at Huangyaguan, about two hours out.
  • Chengde's imperial mountain resort makes a good longer weekend.

Tianjin is easy and cheap, but plan for the cold and the connectivity, and make the most of being next to Beijing. Living here and day-tripping the capital is a smart move.

  • Pack for cold, dry winters, though flats here do have northern central heating.
  • Sort a VPN before landing for blocked apps and sites.
  • Base yourself here and treat Beijing as a cheap day trip rather than paying capital prices.

Nobody speak English so expect you come to Tianjin with your own friends, it is really hard to meet other people
