Waterloo is Canada's tech capital in miniature, a twin-city hub built around two universities famous for co-op, engineering and start-ups, with an easy, affordable pace of life.

Partners & Perks

Verified housing partners and student perks in Waterloo (Ontario): no blind deposits, no ghost landlords. Grab one before someone in your group does.

We’re still lining up verified partners in Waterloo (Ontario). In the meantime, ask the Waterloo (Ontario) group for the housing leads students are using right now.

Waterloo pairs the University of Waterloo, renowned for engineering, mathematics and its huge co-op programme, with Wilfrid Laurier University next door, making the twin cities of Kitchener-Waterloo a genuine tech and start-up hub often dubbed Silicon Valley North. It's affordable, safe and full of students, with a new light-rail line linking the two cities and Toronto within easy reach. It suits those drawn to technology, entrepreneurship or a practical, career-focused exchange.

  • The University of Waterloo is a global name in engineering, computer science and mathematics.
  • Kitchener-Waterloo is Canada's leading tech cluster outside Toronto, thick with start-ups and interns.

With two universities and a big co-op population, the social scene is young and busy, centred on Uptown Waterloo's bars and King Street between the campuses. The autumn brings KW Oktoberfest, the largest Bavarian festival outside Germany, which takes over the region. Campus clubs, hackathons and start-up events are a genuine part of student life here, not an afterthought.

  • Uptown Waterloo and King Street have the main student bars and restaurants between the two campuses.
  • KW Oktoberfest in October is North America's biggest Bavarian festival and a regional institution.
  • Ask the Waterloo group on Studcasa about hackathons and start-up nights worth turning up to.

Waterloo is more affordable than Toronto while still offering plenty to do. Budget around C$1,400 to C$2,000 a month all-in, with purpose-built student housing near the universities keeping rents predictable, if not always cheap. The co-op culture means many students are used to short leases and subletting, which can work in your favour for a single term.

  • Rooms in the student towers near the universities typically run C$700 to C$1,100 a month.
  • Because of co-op terms, four-month subleases are common and handy for a single exchange semester.

The Northdale neighbourhood between the two universities is packed with purpose-built student flats and shared houses, walkable to both campuses. Uptown Waterloo is more grown-up and central, while Kitchener offers cheaper rooms along the ION light-rail line. The constant churn of co-op students means sublets appear year-round, which is ideal for a one-term exchange.

  • Northdale, between Waterloo and Laurier, is the main student-housing zone, walkable to both.
  • Look for four-month co-op sublets, which suit single-semester exchanges perfectly.
  • Check the university housing services and the Waterloo group on Studcasa for rooms and sublets.

Grand River Transit runs the buses and the ION light-rail line, which links Waterloo, the universities and downtown Kitchener, and students get a transit pass bundled into their fees. The campuses and Uptown are walkable and the whole area is flat and cycle-friendly. GO Transit trains and buses connect Kitchener to Toronto for weekend trips.

  • Your student card includes a Grand River Transit pass; the ION light rail links both campuses and Kitchener.
  • GO Transit runs from Kitchener to Toronto's Union Station in about two hours.

The University of Waterloo is Canada's standout for engineering, computer science and mathematics, and its co-op programme, the largest of its kind, embeds paid work terms into most degrees. Wilfrid Laurier is strong in business and music. The academic culture is intense and career-focused, with a strong entrepreneurial streak. Exchange students enrol through each university's international office.

  • The Davis Centre and Dana Porter libraries are Waterloo's main study hubs.
  • Even as an exchange student you can attend Waterloo's Velocity start-up events and workshops.

The rules depend on your nationality and the length of your programme, so use this as orientation and confirm with the official Canadian immigration site. The key quirk is that a study permit is not required for programmes of six months or less, which covers many single-semester exchanges. Longer than six months and you'll generally need a study permit, applied for online before you travel.

Separately, most visitors need either an eTA for air travel or a visitor visa depending on nationality, so check both.

  • Programme of six months or less, usually no study permit required
  • Longer than six months, apply for a study permit online before arrival
  • You'll still need an eTA or a visitor visa depending on your nationality
  • Apply early; processing times swing seasonally and requirements vary by country

The region's food culture reflects its German-Mennonite heritage, seen best at the St. Jacobs Farmers' Market just north of the city, the largest year-round market in Canada. Uptown Waterloo and downtown Kitchener have a growing independent restaurant and cafe scene, and the tech influx has broadened the options considerably. Everyday life is relaxed, green and family-friendly.

  • The St. Jacobs Farmers' Market, ten minutes north, is Canada's largest and rooted in Mennonite country.
  • Explore the independent cafes and restaurants of Uptown Waterloo and downtown Kitchener.

Northdale, sandwiched between the two universities, is the dense student quarter of towers and shared houses. Uptown Waterloo is the polished, walkable heart with the best cafes and bars, while downtown Kitchener, revitalised by the tech scene, offers cheaper rooms and its own nightlife along the light-rail line. The surrounding countryside is close and quietly beautiful.

  • Northdale for the walk to campus; Uptown Waterloo for cafes, bars and a more grown-up feel.
  • Downtown Kitchener along the ION line is cheaper and increasingly lively thanks to the tech scene.

Waterloo is well placed for southern Ontario. Toronto is under two hours by GO train or car, the Mennonite village of St. Jacobs is ten minutes away, and the dramatic Elora Gorge and pretty town of Elora are about half an hour for hiking and swimming. Stratford's theatre festival is forty minutes, and Lake Huron's beaches are reachable for a summer day.

  • Elora and the Elora Gorge, half an hour away, are the best local spot for hiking and river swimming.
  • Toronto is under two hours by GO train for a big-city weekend.
  • Stratford, forty minutes away, hosts a world-class theatre festival each summer.

Time your housing around the co-op cycle, as sublets appear constantly and a four-month lease can be perfect for one semester. Get stuck into the tech and start-up scene even if you're not an engineer, because it's the region's defining energy. And do not miss Oktoberfest if your term runs into October, since it turns the whole area into a party.

  • Hunt for four-month co-op sublets, which line up neatly with a single exchange term.
  • If you arrive in autumn, get Oktoberfest tickets early, as the big Festhallen sell out.
