Ottawa is the calm, green capital where two big bilingual universities meet Gothic parliament buildings, canal skating and the wild of Gatineau Park twenty minutes away.

Partners & Perks

Verified housing partners and student perks in Ottawa: no blind deposits, no ghost landlords. Grab one before someone in your group does.

We’re still lining up verified partners in Ottawa. In the meantime, ask the Ottawa group for the housing leads students are using right now.

Canada's capital gives you the University of Ottawa, the largest bilingual university in the world, and Carleton, both a short ride from Parliament Hill and the Rideau Canal. Ottawa is safe, green and manageable, with world-class free museums and easy escapes into Gatineau Park. It's less frenetic than Toronto or Montreal, which suits exchange students who want a high quality of life and the option to practise both English and French.

  • The University of Ottawa is bilingual, so you can study and live in English, French or both.
  • In winter the Rideau Canal becomes the world's largest skating rink, right through the city centre.

Student life centres on the ByWard Market, the historic quarter of bars, pubs and late-night food just downhill from uOttawa. Carleton students gravitate to Old Ottawa South and the pubs of Bank Street. The social calendar peaks with Winterlude in February and Canada Day on Parliament Hill, and there's a steady circuit of campus events and cheap museum nights year-round.

  • The ByWard Market is the main nightlife hub; grab a BeaverTail pastry on the way home.
  • Bank Street and Elgin Street have the pubs students frequent away from the tourist core.
  • Ask the Ottawa group on Studcasa which campus societies run the best trips to Gatineau.

Ottawa sits in the middle of the Canadian range, cheaper than Toronto but a touch pricier than Montreal. Budget around C$1,400 to C$2,000 a month all-in, with rooms near uOttawa in Sandy Hill or near Carleton in Old Ottawa South the usual student picks. Museums are often free or discounted, which keeps entertainment costs down.

  • Rooms in Sandy Hill or Centretown typically run C$750 to C$1,150 a month.
  • Many national museums offer free Thursday evenings; check the Canadian Museum of History across the river.

Sandy Hill, wedged between uOttawa and the ByWard Market, is the go-to student neighbourhood, full of converted houses within walking distance of class. Centretown and the Glebe are more polished and central, while Old Ottawa South sits by Carleton. Gatineau across the river in Quebec is cheaper if you don't mind crossing a bridge. Book by spring for September.

  • Sandy Hill for uOttawa; Old Ottawa South or the Glebe for Carleton.
  • Consider Gatineau across the river for lower rent if you don't mind a bridge crossing.
  • Use uOttawa's off-campus housing service and the Ottawa group on Studcasa to find rooms.

OC Transpo runs the buses and the O-Train light rail, including the Confederation Line through downtown, and students load a discounted U-Pass onto their Presto card. Both main campuses have their own stations. The city is flat and cycle-friendly, with excellent segregated paths along the canal, and in winter you can quite literally skate to class on the Rideau Canal.

  • The U-Pass is bundled into student fees at uOttawa and Carleton and covers all OC Transpo travel.
  • The Confederation Line light rail links downtown, uOttawa and the east and west ends.
  • Skates and a bike both count as transport here; the canal pathway runs right through town.

The University of Ottawa is a strong research university with particular reputations in law, health and political science, fitting for the capital, and it teaches fully in both official languages. Carleton is known for journalism, public affairs and engineering. Both run dedicated exchange orientations, and internships with government and NGOs are a genuine draw of studying in Ottawa.

  • uOttawa's Morisset Library and Carleton's MacOdrum Library are the main study spaces.
  • The capital location means unusually good access to government and NGO placements and talks.

The rules depend on your nationality and the length of your programme, so use this as orientation and confirm with the official Canadian immigration site. The key quirk is that a study permit is not required for programmes of six months or less, which covers many single-semester exchanges. Longer than six months and you'll generally need a study permit, applied for online before you travel.

Separately, most visitors need either an eTA for air travel or a visitor visa depending on nationality, so check both.

  • Programme of six months or less, usually no study permit required
  • Longer than six months, apply for a study permit online before arrival
  • You'll still need an eTA or a visitor visa depending on your nationality
  • Apply early; processing times swing seasonally and requirements vary by country

Ottawa's signature snack is the BeaverTail, a fried-dough pastry born in the ByWard Market, best eaten warm after skating. The market itself has fresh produce, cheese and cafes, and the food scene has broadened with strong Lebanese, Vietnamese and Ethiopian communities. Culture is buttoned-up but improving fast, with free national museums forming the backbone of a rainy-day plan.

  • Try a classic BeaverTail from the original ByWard Market stand after a canal skate.
  • The ByWard Market building and stalls are the best spot for fresh food and weekend browsing.

Sandy Hill is the student heartland by uOttawa, historic and walkable but variable in quality. The Glebe is Ottawa's most desirable central neighbourhood, full of cafes and independent shops near Lansdowne Park. Centretown is dense and convenient, Hintonburg is the hip, up-and-coming quarter, and Old Ottawa South balances quiet with proximity to Carleton.

  • Sandy Hill for campus proximity; the Glebe and Hintonburg for cafes and independent shops.
  • Lansdowne Park in the Glebe hosts markets, football and a cinema for weekend downtime.

Ottawa's location on the Ontario-Quebec border opens up plenty. Gatineau Park, twenty minutes away, offers hiking, swimming and cross-country skiing on the doorstep. Montreal is two hours by train or bus, Mont-Tremblant about the same for skiing, and Kingston and the Thousand Islands make longer weekends. Cross the river and you're in French-speaking Quebec instantly.

  • Gatineau Park is twenty minutes out for hiking, beaches and winter cross-country skiing.
  • Montreal is two hours by VIA Rail or bus for a change of pace and language.
  • Kingston and the Thousand Islands make a scenic two-hour trip along the St Lawrence.

Don't dismiss Ottawa as boring; the payoff is quality of life, safety and nature you can reach in twenty minutes. Take advantage of the free museums and the canal, which turn winter from a chore into a highlight. And if you have any French, use it, because switching languages is part of daily life in the capital region.

  • Buy or borrow skates for the Rideau Canal season in January and February; it's the city at its best.
  • Sort a warm, windproof coat; Ottawa is one of the coldest capital cities in the world.

For chill drinks I recommend the warehouse. You can party at the Happy Fish !

🎓 Uni life at University of Ottawa

Which classes do you recommend… or not?

You have a wide range of options, and you can choose to study in either French or English !

Do you have some tips?

The campus is large and pleasant, with a wide variety of buildings and facilities. Overall, I would definitely choose UOttawa again.

✈️ Travel

Best trips to do?

Montreal and Toronto are must-see trips from Ottawa, and if you’re willing to go a bit further, definitely go to Banff!!

🌆 Ottawa vibe

What do you absolutely need to know to live your best life in Ottawa?

The cost of living in Ottawa is quite high, but still manageable. Public transportation is quite convenient with the O-Train and buses. Winters are cold with lots of snow, but summers are very pleasant and make the city really enjoyable.

🏠 Housing

What kind of place was it?

Coliving / Shared House

How much was the rent per month?

600CAD

Where was it located?

Vanier, at 20-25 minutes de bus de l'université

Would you recommend it?

🍻 Social Life

What are some top bars, clubs, or events you recommend?

🎓 Uni life at University of Ottawa

Which classes do you recommend… or not?

Do you have some tips?

✈️ Travel

Best trips to do?

🌆 Ottawa vibe

What do you absolutely need to know to live your best life in Ottawa?

💡 Other Tips

Yes it was just a 10min walk from the Uni, spaceous, lot of storage, laundry room in the flat.

🍻 Social Life

What are some top bars, clubs, or events you recommend?

Nothing

🎓 Uni life at University of Ottawa

Which classes do you recommend… or not?

I loved Philosophie Logique (in french with Samuel Descarreaux) but I would avoid at all cost any math class with Pascal Missie

Do you have some tips?

My biggest tip is to study in the Desmarais' Library on the 2nd floor, little back room with the standing desks and the monitor, silence is mandatory there and your back will thank you

✈️ Travel

Best trips to do?

you need to rent a car cause public transportation is a mess

🌆 Ottawa vibe

What do you absolutely need to know to live your best life in Ottawa?

I felt unsafe in the city, the homeless situation has gotten really bad and Ottawa has a huge problem with drug use mostly fentanyl, you'll see a lot of crackheads be aware of that

💡 Other Tips

Find yourself a good friend group, and get a gym member ship as it will be your only way to get social interactions during winter
