Queretaro is one of Mexico's safest, fastest-growing cities, a UNESCO colonial centre with a Roman-style aqueduct, a booming economy and wine-and-cheese country on its doorstep.

Partners & Perks

Santiago de Queretaro pairs a beautifully preserved colonial core, all plazas, pedestrian streets and a landmark aqueduct, with one of Mexico's most dynamic economies and aerospace industries. Consistently rated among the country's safest and most liveable cities, it hosts UAQ and a Tec de Monterrey campus, and sits in the Bajio wine region. It is polished, prosperous and easy to settle into.

  • Regularly ranked among Mexico's safest and most liveable cities
  • A UNESCO colonial centre crowned by the iconic 74-arch aqueduct
  • In the Bajio wine-and-cheese country, near Bernal and Tequisquiapan

The pedestrianised Centro Historico is the social hub, from Plaza de Armas and Jardin Guerrero to the andadores lined with cafes, cantinas and mezcalerias, with the university crowd from UAQ and Tec keeping it young. The nearby wine-and-cheese route adds weekend tastings, and the city's growth has brought a steady stream of new bars and restaurants. It is sophisticated but relaxed.

  • Wander the Centro's andadores and plazas for cantinas and mezcal bars
  • The UAQ and Tec de Monterrey crowds keep the Centro lively
  • Join a wine-and-cheese tasting on the nearby Ruta del Queso y el Vino

Queretaro's boom has nudged prices up, but it is still moderate, so around 500 to 800 euros (roughly 9,500 to 15,000 pesos) a month for a shared flat, food and transport, cheaper than Mexico City. The Centro and upmarket Juriquilla cost more, and outer colonias less. Market lunches and street food stay cheap, while the growing restaurant scene is the tempting splurge.

  • A gordita or a comida corrida runs 60 to 110 pesos
  • The Centro and Juriquilla are pricier, while outer colonias are better value
  • Load a Qrobus card for cheap, integrated bus travel

Students share flats or take rooms in or near the Centro, in Juriquilla close to the northern university campuses, or in newer developments like El Refugio and Zibata. Rapid growth means plenty of modern flats but rising rents, so search early on Inmuebles24 and Facebook groups. Check the commute, as the city is spreading fast.

  • Juriquilla suits students at the northern campuses, while the Centro is walkable
  • Search the Cuartos y Departamentos Queretaro groups and Inmuebles24
  • Ask the Studcasa Queretaro group about commute times as the city sprawls

Queretaro's Qrobus and RedQ integrated bus network covers the city with a rechargeable card, and the compact Centro is easily walkable. There is no metro, so buses, Uber and DiDi do the heavy lifting, with app rides cheap and popular at night. Traffic has grown with the city, so allow time on the main corridors.

  • Use the Qrobus and RedQ buses with a rechargeable transit card
  • The Centro Historico is compact and best explored on foot
  • Uber and DiDi are cheap and the easy choice after dark

The Universidad Autonoma de Queretaro (UAQ) is the main public university, respected across the sciences and humanities, while the Tec de Monterrey campus and the aerospace-focused Universidad Aeronautica en Queretaro (UNAQ) reflect the region's industries. Anahuac and UVM add private options. Teaching is mostly in Spanish, with some English-taught courses at the private campuses.

  • UAQ is the main public university across the sciences and humanities
  • UNAQ and Tec de Monterrey reflect the region's aerospace and tech industries

What you need depends on your nationality and how long you're staying, so treat this as a starting point and confirm with the Mexican consulate for your country. Many nationalities, including most Europeans, can enter visa-free as tourists for up to 180 days, which covers a single semester. For a full academic year or formal enrolment, you'll usually apply for a temporary resident student visa at a consulate before you travel.

Start early, since consulate appointments and document legalisation take time.

  • Short exchange under 180 days, often visa-free entry for many nationalities
  • Full year or formal enrolment, temporary resident student visa from a consulate
  • Bring your university acceptance letter and proof of funds to the appointment
  • Requirements vary by nationality; always confirm with your Mexican consulate

Queretaro's Bajio cooking brings gorditas de migajas, enchiladas queretanas and hearty market fare, best sampled at the Mercado de la Cruz. The real draw is the surrounding wine-and-cheese route around Tequisquiapan and Ezequiel Montes, where local vineyards and cheesemakers welcome visitors. In town, the Centro's cafes and cantinas cover everyday cravings.

  • Try gorditas and enchiladas queretanas at the Mercado de la Cruz
  • Taste local wines and cheeses on the Ruta del Queso y el Vino
  • Graze the cantinas and cafes around the Centro's plazas

The Centro Historico is the walkable, atmospheric heart of plazas and the aqueduct, while Juriquilla to the north is the upmarket zone near the newer university campuses and the reservoir. El Refugio and Zibata are fast-growing modern districts with new flats, and Jurica is an established leafy suburb. Balance charm against convenience for your campus.

  • Centro Historico: walkable, historic and full of cafes and bars
  • Juriquilla: upmarket, near the northern campuses and the reservoir
  • El Refugio or Zibata: modern, with newer flats but further out

Queretaro is superbly placed. The monolith of Pena de Bernal, one of the world's tallest, and the wine town of Tequisquiapan are about an hour away, San Miguel de Allende an easy hour, and Guanajuato around two and a half. For something wilder, the Franciscan missions and waterfalls of the Sierra Gorda make a spectacular longer trip.

  • Pena de Bernal monolith and Tequisquiapan wine town: about 1 hour
  • San Miguel de Allende: roughly 1 hour
  • The Sierra Gorda missions and waterfalls for an adventurous weekend

Queretaro is safe and easy, but it is growing so fast that commutes can surprise you, so check distances before renting. Use Uber or DiDi at night, carry cash for markets, and make the most of the wine-and-cheese route at weekends. A little Spanish helps outside the universities, and the dry highland climate means cool evenings year-round.

  • Check commute distances, as the city is expanding quickly
  • Use Uber or DiDi after dark and keep pesos for markets
  • Ask the Studcasa Queretaro group about Bernal trips and the wine route

🏠 Housing

What kind of place was it?

Coliving / Shared House

How much was the rent per month?

300€

Where was it located?

Tecnologico neighborhood, close from TEC de Monterrey

Would you recommend it?

I was in Kali Homes, which is a pretty known house for exchange students in Querétaro. I recommend it if you are able to live with 20 persons! The majority are exchange students, and some are Mexicans: you'll meet great people. I loved my experience and I would do it again, but I completely understand if some people are not ready to live with that much people.

🍻 Social Life

What are some top bars, clubs, or events you recommend?

With LifeXperience you literally get to see every club of the city. You can find an event nearly every night, but at the same time if you want to chill out, the city easily allows it.

🎓 Uni life at UAQ

Which classes do you recommend… or not?

You don't have many classes to attend so make sure to stack them at the beginning of the week to be free on the week-ends! I had "Democratizacion en México y America Latina" with a teacher I highly recommand. In general, every teacher really pay attention to the fact that you are not from Mexico, and easily help you if you encounter any issue.

Do you have some tips?

Most of the campus is outdoors, which is really pleasant! Make sure to notify the administration of your arrival so that they know which classes you are taking

✈️ Travel

Best trips to do?

I would say Querétaro is the best city for your exchange in terms of location because you literally are in the middle of the country, which really allows you to travel anywhere without taking the plane or spending too many hours on the bus. I did Puebla, San Miguel de Allende, Guadalajara, Puerto Vallarta, Puerto Escondido, Mexico City, Baja California... Mexico is such a beautiful country!

🌆 Queretaro vibe

What do you absolutely need to know to live your best life in Queretaro?

The city center is beautiful, but if you don't live nearby, you may not visit often, as you'll need to use Uber or the bus for every trip. The city is known for being the safest and most expensive in the country. Housing is cheaper, but your groceries won't cost you any less than in France, for example.
