LA is less a single city than a constellation of neighbourhoods, each with its own scene, wrapped around beaches, mountains and the film industry. UCLA in Westwood and USC near downtown anchor a huge student population, and the weather is famously perfect. It rewards the curious and the sociable, though you will need patience with the distances.

  • Home to UCLA, USC, Loyola Marymount and Cal State LA, among others.
  • Beaches, mountains and desert are all within a couple of hours.
  • The entertainment industry shapes the culture and the job market.

Student life scatters across Westwood, the beach towns and the eastside, so you build a scene rather than stumble into one. Beach days in Santa Monica and Venice, hikes to the Hollywood Sign, and gigs across the city fill the calendar. The trick is picking a base and going deep.

  • Westwood Village by UCLA is the classic student hub for food and cinemas.
  • Spend weekends between Santa Monica, Venice and the Griffith Park trails.
  • Catch live music from the Echo in Echo Park to the Hollywood Bowl.

LA is expensive, especially for housing: budget around 1,800 to 2,800 dollars a month with shared rent. Rents near the beach and Westside are the steepest, so location drives your costs. Skipping a car and using the growing Metro saves a surprising amount.

  • Shared rooms run about 900 to 1,500 dollars a month depending on area.
  • A U-Pass on LA Metro is far cheaper than running a car and parking.
  • Cheap, brilliant tacos keep your food budget down across the city.

Where you live in LA shapes everything, from your commute to your social life. Students cluster near UCLA in Westwood and Palms, near USC in the University Park area, and along the Expo Line to Culver City and Santa Monica. Prioritise a spot on a Metro line to avoid drowning in traffic.

  • Westwood, Palms and Culver City suit UCLA students on the Westside.
  • University Park and areas near the E Line work well for USC.
  • The Studcasa Los Angeles group is invaluable for rooms and avoiding scams.

LA is car country, but the Metro rail and bus network is expanding fast and a TAP card covers it all. The E and B lines connect key student areas, and many students combine transit with cycling, walking and the odd rideshare. Traffic is real, so plan around the peaks.

  • Get a TAP card; students can buy a discounted U-Pass through their university.
  • The E Line (Expo) links downtown, USC, Culver City and Santa Monica.
  • Combine Metro with Metro Bike Share and rideshares to skip owning a car.

UCLA and USC are major research universities on quarter and semester systems respectively, so check which calendar you land on. Expect large lectures with smaller discussion sections, heavy reading and continuous assessment, plus professors who hold structured office hours. Libraries such as UCLA's Powell and USC's Doheny are open long hours.

  • Confirm whether your host runs quarters or semesters; the pace differs a lot.
  • Both campuses have busy international offices with trips and support.

Almost every exchange student needs a visa, and which one depends on your programme and nationality. Most exchange students come on a J-1 exchange visitor visa (with a DS-2019 from your host university) or an F-1 student visa (with an I-20); your US university tells you which and issues the document. You then pay the SEVIS fee, complete the DS-160 form, and attend an in-person interview at a US embassy or consulate, so start the moment you're accepted, as interview waits can be long.

Budget for the SEVIS fee (around 220 dollars for J-1, 350 for F-1) plus the visa application fee, and note J-1 visas carry mandatory health insurance rules and sometimes a two-year home-residency requirement. Keep every document for border entry.

  • Most exchange students, J-1 (DS-2019) or F-1 (I-20) visa
  • Pay the SEVIS fee (~$220 J-1 / ~$350 F-1) before your interview
  • Complete DS-160 and attend an in-person consulate interview
  • J-1 requires compliant health insurance; check the two-year home-residency rule

LA has arguably the best and most diverse food in the country, from taco trucks and Koreatown barbecue to Thai Town, Little Tokyo and the stalls of Grand Central Market. The culture stretches from world-class museums to the beach boardwalks. Eating well here costs very little if you follow the crowds.

  • Chase the best tacos from street trucks; East LA and Boyle Heights deliver.
  • Eat your way through Koreatown, Thai Town and Grand Central Market.
  • The Getty and the Broad museums are free; just book a slot ahead.

LA's neighbourhoods feel like different cities: beachy Santa Monica and Venice, hip Silver Lake and Los Feliz on the eastside, bustling Koreatown, and the student hub of Westwood. Your choice hinges on your campus and whether you want beach, nightlife or a walkable core. A Metro line nearby is worth chasing.

  • Westwood and Palms: closest to UCLA and full of students.
  • Santa Monica and Venice: beach life, pricey but connected by the E Line.
  • Silver Lake, Los Feliz and Koreatown: walkable, lively eastside options.

LA is the base camp for the whole Southwest. San Diego and Santa Barbara are easy train rides, Joshua Tree and the mountains sit a couple of hours out, and Las Vegas is a classic road trip. Weekends can be beach, desert or snow depending on the mood.

  • The Pacific Surfliner train runs to Santa Barbara and San Diego.
  • Joshua Tree and Big Bear are about two hours for desert or snow.
  • Las Vegas is a four-hour drive; carpool for a classic weekend.

LA rewards those who commit to a patch and explore outward rather than trying to do everything. Base yourself on a Metro line, embrace the taco-truck economy, and factor traffic into every plan. Say yes to the beach and the hikes.

  • Live near a Metro line to keep your sanity in LA traffic.
  • Carry a light layer; evenings and the ocean breeze get cool fast.
  • Ask the Studcasa Los Angeles group about carpools for Joshua Tree and Vegas trips.
