The Fort Lauderdale (Florida) TL;DR

Fort Lauderdale is a sunny, canal-laced beach city just north of Miami, home to Nova Southeastern and Broward College. Exchange life here means year-round sunshine, boat culture and easy access to South Florida.

Partners & Perks

Verified housing partners and student perks in Fort Lauderdale (Florida): no blind deposits, no ghost landlords. Grab one before someone in your group does.

We’re still lining up verified partners in Fort Lauderdale (Florida). In the meantime, ask the Fort Lauderdale (Florida) group for the housing leads students are using right now.

Fort Lauderdale gives you South Florida beach life with a slightly calmer, more liveable feel than Miami next door. Miles of sand, a network of canals nicknamed the Venice of America, and constant sunshine set the scene. With universities like Nova Southeastern nearby and Miami 40 minutes down the line, you get the best of both.

  • Home to Nova Southeastern University and Broward College, with FAU nearby.
  • Miami is about 40 minutes south by the Brightline train.
  • Beaches, boating and warm weather essentially all year round.

Beach days are the backbone of student life, with the promenade along Fort Lauderdale Beach the natural gathering point. Las Olas Boulevard packs in bars and restaurants, while nearby Wilton Manors adds a lively nightlife scene. The warm weather keeps everything outdoors and easygoing.

  • Las Olas Boulevard is the main strip for bars, cafes and restaurants.
  • Spend weekends on Fort Lauderdale Beach and the palm-lined promenade.
  • Hop the water taxi along the canals for a different night out.

Fort Lauderdale is on the pricier side of Florida: budget around 1,500 to 2,300 dollars a month with shared rent. Housing near the beach carries a premium, so sharing inland saves real money. Air-conditioning and the odd beach day out are the main extras.

  • Shared rooms run about 800 to 1,200 dollars a month depending on the area.
  • Save on rent by sharing inland and taking the bus or train to the coast.
  • The Sun Trolley is cheap and the Brightline links you to Miami and beyond.

Students share flats across Victoria Park, Wilton Manors and the areas near their campus, with beachfront living reserved for bigger budgets. South Florida rents are high, so sharing is the norm. Check for hurricane shutters and how the building handles storm season.

  • Victoria Park and Wilton Manors are popular, walkable and central.
  • Sharing inland cuts costs sharply versus beachfront blocks.
  • Ask the Studcasa Fort Lauderdale group for housemates and honest listings.

Fort Lauderdale is spread out, so most students combine the free Sun Trolley, Broward County buses and the Brightline train, which whisks you to Miami or West Palm Beach in half an hour. A bike works along the flat coast. Many end up sharing a car for bigger trips.

  • The Sun Trolley is free or cheap and covers downtown and the beach.
  • Brightline trains reach Miami, West Palm Beach and Orlando quickly.
  • Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood Airport (FLL) is a cheap hub for flights.

Nova Southeastern and the other local institutions run on a semester system with a practical, career-focused bent, strong in business, health sciences and marine studies given the coastal setting. Expect a mix of lectures and hands-on coursework, with professors keeping regular office hours. Libraries and study centres stay open late in term.

  • Register early; popular health and business courses fill quickly.
  • Your host university's international office runs orientation and social events.

Almost every exchange student needs a visa, and which one depends on your programme and nationality. Most exchange students come on a J-1 exchange visitor visa (with a DS-2019 from your host university) or an F-1 student visa (with an I-20); your US university tells you which and issues the document. You then pay the SEVIS fee, complete the DS-160 form, and attend an in-person interview at a US embassy or consulate, so start the moment you're accepted, as interview waits can be long.

Budget for the SEVIS fee (around 220 dollars for J-1, 350 for F-1) plus the visa application fee, and note J-1 visas carry mandatory health insurance rules and sometimes a two-year home-residency requirement. Keep every document for border entry.

  • Most exchange students, J-1 (DS-2019) or F-1 (I-20) visa
  • Pay the SEVIS fee (~$220 J-1 / ~$350 F-1) before your interview
  • Complete DS-160 and attend an in-person consulate interview
  • J-1 requires compliant health insurance; check the two-year home-residency rule

South Florida food is a Latin and Caribbean melting pot: Cuban sandwiches and cafecito, fresh seafood, stone crab in season and ceviche. The boating culture means waterfront dining is everywhere, and the vibe is relaxed and sun-soaked. Spanish is widely spoken across the area.

  • Try a Cuban sandwich and a cortadito at a local Latin cafe.
  • Order stone crab in season, roughly October to May, at a waterfront spot.
  • Eat along the canals; many restaurants have their own dock.

Where you live depends on beach access versus budget. Las Olas and the beach strip are central but pricey, Victoria Park is walkable and popular with students, and Wilton Manors adds nightlife. Sharing further inland stretches your money while keeping the train and trolley close.

  • Las Olas and the beach: central and lively, but the priciest.
  • Victoria Park: walkable, leafy and popular with students.
  • Wilton Manors: friendly, sociable and full of bars and restaurants.

Fort Lauderdale is perfectly placed for South Florida adventures. Miami is a quick train ride, the Everglades and Palm Beach are close, and the Florida Keys stretch south for the ultimate road trip. The Brightline makes car-free trips easy.

  • Miami is 40 minutes south on the Brightline for a bigger-city fix.
  • The Everglades are close by for airboat trips and alligator spotting.
  • Drive the Overseas Highway to Key West for an unforgettable weekend.

Fort Lauderdale is all about the outdoors, but plan around the climate and costs. Hurricane season runs June to November, rents are high so share early, and the sun is stronger than it looks. Get on the water as often as you can.

  • Hurricane season runs June to November; know your building's storm plan.
  • Wear sun protection daily; the Florida sun burns fast even in winter.
  • Ask the Studcasa Fort Lauderdale group about beach car-shares and Keys road trips.

🏠 Housing

What kind of place was it?

Student Residence

How much was the rent per month?

2000$

Where was it located?

In Davie at 8min by car to the school

Would you recommend it?

Yes, because it is the easiest way to have an apartment. But we don't have roommates which can be a plus and a minus. And the apartment is no equipped, we have to buy everything: double baker, pan, plates, towels, sheets... It's really expensive and we have to trow it or donate at the end because it is too big to take it bake to France. But we have access to a gym and a beautiful pool which is quite good.

🍻 Social Life

What are some top bars, clubs, or events you recommend?

If you are under 21y you can go out to the munchies in Fort Lauderdale or to the revenge in Miami. The music is really good and the people are really open to talk. But they always promise to see you again and never do it. It is hard to make good Americans friends. And if you are 21yo, you can go the rhythm and wine with is a bar or to the Sway which is a club, both in FL. Club are expensive and they charge you very often at the entrance by 30$, even if you already pay your place around 35$.

🎓 Uni life at nova southeastern university

Which classes do you recommend… or not?

franchise management is good but from 6 to 10pm on Thursday so it is inconvenient if you want to go party on Thursday. Most of the classes are easy and the exam are at home for the majority.

Do you have some tips?

The campus is really good but we don't spend a lot of time there because University point, the housing given by Ieseg is off campus. The registration was not that hard but as Ieseg are the only exchange student for 4 month they have, they always send us mails that don't concern us, so we were often loss. And there is some events on campus but personally, I was not really aware of them, so I didn't do a lot.

✈️ Travel

Best trips to do?

We did a road trip from Las Vegas to Zion national park, Bryce Canyon, Page, Grand Canyon, and Route 66, it was amazing !

🌆 Fort Lauderdale (Florida) vibe

What do you absolutely need to know to live your best life in Fort Lauderdale (Florida)?

You always have to pay Uber for everything, even to go at the grocery store. It is really expensive. Nobody walk on sidewalk. So, Fort Lauderdale is a good city but we didn't go a lot other than for parties. Even to go at the beach, it is around 50$ for the round trip.

💡 Other Tips

The American dream with house parties, boat parties and all that is really far away of the reality. The students are cool but they all already have their own life so you would spend more time with Ieseg student than with Americans because they don't really try to include exchange students.

🏠 Housing

What kind of place was it?

Classic Apartment

How much was the rent per month?

2000

Where was it located?

At University Pointe, an on campus residence

Would you recommend it?

Yes because it is the only option for housing and it is an amazing one. There is a private gym, a huge swimingpool, and a lot of restaurants near the buildings. You have a private shuttle to go from this residence to the school (5min) and to Walmart (5min). And the apartment is very nice. Even though you can't have roomates or anything else, because the school can't assure you another room. But the housing is very nice.

🍻 Social Life

What are some top bars, clubs, or events you recommend?

You should go to the events on Miami, cars exposition, football or basketball match. Go to the match on the school campus, basket, baseball ...

🎓 Uni life at Nova Southeastern University

Which classes do you recommend… or not?

Entrepreneurship is a great class, no final exam and group project so you can meet people. Business Law is fun alos, only MCQ, and you learn about the American Constituion

Do you have some tips?

The campus is amazing and big. You have a pool, pickeball and basketball groundS you can use with friends. Everything is on campus, you can spend time on the outside with a lot of relaxation area...

✈️ Travel

Best trips to do?

The best one is Miami, easy to go by uber. But you can travel everywhere. All flights within the US are not expensive, you can easily go to New York... But you can also leave the country. Puerto Rico, Mexico are easy to go for example.

🌆 Fort Lauderdale vibe

What do you absolutely need to know to live your best life in Fort Lauderdale?

It is a beautiful city, not that much activities to do in it. But there are beautiful beaches, the city center is very cute, and a lovely little street along the Hollywood and Dania beach surrounded by restaurants and bars
