The Charleston (SC) TL;DR

Campus life exactly like the movies: football games, dorm culture, a club for everything and Americans who genuinely want to show you around. Everything is big, loud and weirdly welcoming.

Charleston is a warm, historic port city of pastel houses, cobblestones and nearby beaches, home to the College of Charleston. Exchange life here is easygoing, southern and soaked in Lowcountry charm.

Partners & Perks

Charleston is one of the prettiest and friendliest cities in the American South, all cobbled lanes, antebellum houses and palm-lined waterfronts. The College of Charleston sits right in the historic centre, so you live inside a postcard, with beaches 20 minutes away. The pace is slow, the welcome is warm and the food is a genuine draw.

  • Home to the College of Charleston, right in the historic downtown peninsula.
  • Folly Beach and Sullivan's Island are both within about 20 minutes.
  • Consistently voted one of the best cities to visit in the US.

Student life here mixes historic-campus charm with a lively bar scene on King Street and long afternoons at the beach. The mild climate means the social calendar spills outdoors for most of the year. Festivals like Spoleto fill the city with music and art each spring.

  • Upper King Street is the heart of the bar and restaurant scene.
  • Beach days at Folly are a weekly ritual; the surf break is beginner-friendly.
  • Spoleto Festival USA turns the whole city into a stage each May and June.

Charleston is moderately priced for the US: budget around 1,300 to 2,000 dollars a month with shared rent. Downtown living carries a tourist premium, so many students save by sharing in West Ashley or Mount Pleasant. Beach trips and casual eating out are the main extras.

  • Shared rooms downtown run 700 to 1,000 dollars; more affordable in West Ashley.
  • A Lowcountry meal out is around 15 to 25 dollars.
  • CARTA buses and the free DASH trolley cut your transport costs downtown.

Downtown rooms near the College are convenient but pricey and snapped up fast, so many students share houses in West Ashley, James Island or Mount Pleasant and commute in. Charleston's old houses are charming but check for damp and flood history. Start early for the autumn intake.

  • West Ashley and James Island offer better value a short drive from campus.
  • Downtown south of Calhoun Street is walkable but commands a premium.
  • Post in the Studcasa Charleston group to find housemates and vetted rooms.

The historic peninsula is small and made for walking or cycling, and the free DASH trolley loops the tourist core. CARTA buses cover the wider area, including a route to the airport. Many students living off the peninsula end up sharing a car or bike.

  • The DASH trolley is free and covers the downtown historic district.
  • CARTA buses reach West Ashley, Mount Pleasant and the airport.
  • A bike is ideal on the flat, compact peninsula; mind the summer heat.

The College of Charleston is a mid-sized public liberal-arts university on a semester system, strong in the humanities, marine biology and the arts. Class sizes are small and discussion-led, so professors will know your name and expect participation. Addlestone Library is a modern, well-equipped study hub in the heart of campus.

  • Register early; small class sizes mean popular seminars fill fast.
  • The Center for International Education runs orientation and social events.

Almost every exchange student needs a visa, and which one depends on your programme and nationality. Most exchange students come on a J-1 exchange visitor visa (with a DS-2019 from your host university) or an F-1 student visa (with an I-20); your US university tells you which and issues the document. You then pay the SEVIS fee, complete the DS-160 form, and attend an in-person interview at a US embassy or consulate, so start the moment you're accepted, as interview waits can be long.

Budget for the SEVIS fee (around 220 dollars for J-1, 350 for F-1) plus the visa application fee, and note J-1 visas carry mandatory health insurance rules and sometimes a two-year home-residency requirement. Keep every document for border entry.

  • Most exchange students, J-1 (DS-2019) or F-1 (I-20) visa
  • Pay the SEVIS fee (~$220 J-1 / ~$350 F-1) before your interview
  • Complete DS-160 and attend an in-person consulate interview
  • J-1 requires compliant health insurance; check the two-year home-residency rule

Charleston is a genuine food destination, built on Lowcountry cooking: shrimp and grits, she-crab soup, oysters and slow barbecue. The city takes its history seriously too, from Rainbow Row to the plantations along the Ashley River. Expect long, lazy meals and southern hospitality.

  • Try shrimp and grits and she-crab soup; Husk and Fig are famous but book ahead.
  • Grab oysters and a sunset at a Shem Creek or Folly Beach shack.
  • Walk Rainbow Row and the Battery to soak up the historic centre.

The historic peninsula is the postcard, walkable and central but expensive, while the surrounding areas offer space and beaches for less. West Ashley and James Island are practical student bases, and Mount Pleasant sits handy for the northern beaches. Folly Beach is the laid-back surf option.

  • Downtown peninsula: historic and walkable, but the priciest choice.
  • West Ashley and James Island: affordable, a short drive from campus and Folly.
  • Mount Pleasant: family-friendly and close to Sullivan's Island and Isle of Palms.

Charleston is well placed for exploring the southern coast. Savannah makes a gorgeous day or weekend trip, the beaches stretch in both directions, and Congaree's swampy wilderness lies inland. A car opens up the most, but buses and trains cover the bigger hops.

  • Savannah, Georgia is about two hours south and just as photogenic.
  • Kiawah and Edisto islands offer wilder, quieter beaches nearby.
  • Myrtle Beach is roughly 90 minutes north for a livelier coast.

Charleston rewards a slow, sociable approach, but prepare for the climate. The summer heat and humidity are intense and hurricane season runs into autumn, so watch the forecasts. Get out to the beaches often and never leave without eating your way through the Lowcountry classics.

  • Hurricane season peaks in September; keep an eye on local alerts.
  • The summer humidity is fierce; carry water and plan around the midday heat.
  • Ask the Studcasa Charleston group which beach shuttles and car-shares run at weekends.

What kind of place was it?

Student Residence

How much was the rent per month?

Where was it located?

in the campus

Would you recommend it?

Yes, I would recommend Warren Place in Charleston. What I liked most was the location, it’s very central, close to downtown and campus, which makes getting around very easy. On the downside, it can be a bit expensive.Maintenance is generally good, but response times can vary. If I had to choose again, I would probably pick Warren Place again for the convenience and quality of life. That said, if I wanted something cheaper or quieter, I might try another residence a bit farther from downtown.

🍻 Social Life

What are some top bars, clubs, or events you recommend?

Top bars, clubs, or events: The city has a great social scene with lots of bars, clubs, and events. Charleston is a very lively and fun city overall. However, if you are under 21, it’s basically not accessible—fake IDs are not worth it at all. Police are everywhere and ID checks are very strict. Because of that, most social life for under-21 students happens through house parties, student events, beach days, and daytime activities rather than clubs.

🎓 Uni life at college of charleston

Which classes do you recommend… or not?

Most courses are very accessible and not too demanding — finance is really the only class that felt difficult, so I’d avoid it unless you’re confident or really interested.

Do you have some tips?

The campus is really nice, especially with its historic buildings and relaxed vibe. Registration was pretty easy as long as you plan ahead. Big tip: try to schedule all your classes on Tuesday and Thursday. That gives you long weekends and makes it much easier to travel or enjoy the city.

🌆 Charleston (SC) vibe

What do you absolutely need to know to live your best life in Charleston (SC)?

Charleston is an amazing city to live in, especially as a student. The city is beautiful, safe, and full of things to do. You don’t really need a car if you live downtown, but it’s great to have one for beach trips (Folly Beach, Isle of Palms). • The lifestyle is very outdoor-oriented: beaches, walks, coffee shops, brunch spots, and sunsets are a big part of social life. • Nightlife is great, but strictly 21+ — police are very strict, so don’t risk fake IDs. • Plan your classes well so you can enjoy the city during the week (Tuesday–Thursday schedules are ideal). • Summers and early fall are very hot and humid, so light clothes are essential.
