St Gallen combines a beautifully preserved old town, a UNESCO-listed abbey precinct and one of Europe's most famous business schools in a walkable, friendly city. It sits high in the green hills of eastern Switzerland, close to the Appenzell countryside, Lake Constance and the mountains. It is smaller and cheaper than Zürich, with a strong international student community drawn by the university.

  • Home to the University of St. Gallen (HSG), a globally ranked business school
  • A UNESCO abbey and library, with Appenzell, the Alps and Lake Constance nearby

The University of St. Gallen (HSG) gives the city a lively, international and famously well-networked student scene, and life clusters in the old town's bars and cafés with their painted oriel windows. Above the city, the Drei Weieren ponds are the summer hangout, where students swim with a view over the rooftops. The OLMA autumn fair is a local highlight.

  • Swim and sunbathe at the Drei Weieren, the three hillside ponds above the old town
  • Explore the old town's bars beneath its famous carved oriel windows
  • Ask the St Gallen Studcasa group about HSG exchange events and weekend hikes into Appenzell

St Gallen is easier on the wallet than Zürich but still expensive by any global standard, so budget around €1,400–2,200 a month. Rents are lower than in the big cities, and the university mensa offers cheap hot meals. A Halbtax card and the regional Ostwind pass keep your travel costs in check.

  • Rooms run roughly CHF 550–950 a month, cheaper than Zürich
  • Eat at the HSG mensa for some of the best-value meals in the city
  • Get a Halbtax card and an Ostwind pass for local and national travel

Rooms in shared flats are the norm, many uphill near the HSG campus in Rotmonten, or dotted around the old town and St. Fiden. The market is competitive at term-start, so search early, and note the campus sits on a steep hill above the centre. Viewings in person are expected.

  • Search WGZimmer.ch, Students.ch and the HSG housing platform for rooms
  • Rotmonten is handy for campus, while the old town keeps you near the nightlife
  • Ask the St Gallen Studcasa group, as HSG exchange students regularly hand over rooms

St Gallen is compact and walkable, served by buses and trolleybuses on the Ostwind tariff, plus the little Appenzell and Trogen mountain railways that climb into the hills. The main station links fast to Zürich in about an hour and to Lake Constance in minutes. Note the steep climb up to the HSG campus.

  • Use VBSG buses and trolleybuses on an Ostwind pass around the city
  • Hop the Appenzeller Bahnen mountain railways for trips into the countryside
  • Take the frequent train to Zürich (about an hour) or down to Lake Constance

The University of St. Gallen (HSG) is the star, consistently ranked among Europe's best for business, economics and management, with a big international exchange intake. The OST university of applied sciences adds technical and design courses. Many HSG courses run in English at Master's level; terms run mid-September to December and February to June.

  • HSG is a leading European business school with a large exchange programme and English-taught courses
  • The OST university of applied sciences covers engineering, technology and design

Switzerland is in Schengen but not the EU, so your process depends on nationality. EU/EFTA students do not need a visa; you enter freely and then register with your local commune (Gemeinde/commune) within 14 days of arrival to get a residence permit, showing enrolment, funds and insurance.

Non-EU students must apply for a national (D) long-stay visa at a Swiss embassy before travelling, then convert it to a residence permit at the local commune after arrival. You will need your acceptance letter, proof of sufficient funds, accommodation and health insurance. Processing can take eight to twelve weeks, so apply as early as possible. Everyone must sort mandatory Swiss health insurance or get an exemption using EHIC or equivalent cover.

  • EU/EFTA: no visa; register with your local commune within 14 days
  • Non-EU: apply for a national D visa at a Swiss embassy before arrival
  • Bring acceptance letter, proof of funds, housing and insurance
  • Sort health insurance early, it is mandatory or needs a formal exemption
  • Start non-EU applications 3+ months ahead; processing is slow

The city's pride is the St. Galler Bratwurst, a veal sausage locals insist you eat without mustard, especially during the OLMA fair each autumn. Regional Appenzeller cheese and the spiced Biber gingerbread are other specialities. The abbey library and old town anchor a rich cultural life, and Sundays stay quiet.

  • Eat a St. Galler Bratwurst from a street grill, and never ask for mustard
  • Visit the UNESCO Abbey Library, one of the world's most beautiful baroque libraries
  • Try Appenzeller cheese and Biber gingerbread from the local markets

The compact Altstadt is the historic, walkable heart around the abbey. Rotmonten, uphill, is where many students live near HSG, St. Fiden and Lachen are practical residential districts, and Riethüsli sits handily on the mountain-railway line.

  • Altstadt for history, bars and being central
  • Rotmonten for proximity to the HSG campus
  • St. Fiden or Lachen for quieter, more affordable rooms

St Gallen is a launchpad for eastern Switzerland and beyond. Traditional Appenzell and the Säntis cable car are under an hour away, Lake Constance and its three-country shoreline, taking in Germany's Konstanz and Austria's Bregenz, start fifteen minutes off, and Liechtenstein and Zürich are both about an hour. The Toggenburg valley offers hiking and skiing.

  • Ride into Appenzell and up Säntis for classic Alpine views, under an hour away
  • Reach Lake Constance in minutes, with Germany and Austria just across the water
  • Visit Liechtenstein's Vaduz or ski in Toggenburg for a weekend

Take the Bratwurst-without-mustard rule seriously, as locals really do notice. Buy a Halbtax and Ostwind pass early, use the mensa to eat cheaply, and pack for a climate that is colder and foggier than the lowlands. The city's steep hills make the bus up to campus well worth it in winter.

  • Never put mustard on your St. Galler Bratwurst if you want to fit in
  • Get a Halbtax and Ostwind pass on arrival to control travel costs
  • Pack warm layers, as St Gallen sits high and gets foggy and cold

🏠 Housing

What kind of place was it?

Classic Apartment

How much was the rent per month?

2200

Where was it located?

By the Cathedral, in the center of town

Would you recommend it?

So damn overpriced. 16m^2 for over 2k per month is a joke. Location was right in town, which I liked, but most students live up on the hill by the university, which is smart in a sense because there are a LOT of stairs to walk up from the center to uni every day. Landlord was an a** hole (not sure if I can say that on here). Never sent me a signed copy of the contract back although I called and emailed her multiple times (so I basically lived there illegally), and also the apartment was built badly, and the fire detector was placed right above my stove so every time I cooked the fire alarm went off and the fire department came (thats a 1,400 CHF fine btw - they came 3 times...). Landlord made me pay, so I had to sue her (which also wasn't cheap in Switzerland, but I was being ripped off and it was about the principle for me. Other exchange students found apartments for much cheaper, I think if you live not in the center of town you can get better prices

🍻 Social Life

What are some top bars, clubs, or events you recommend?

I study in Madrid, which is of course a huge party city, but St Gallen was so bad compared to it. There is barely any clubs, and most of the time when you go there is no one else there.

🎓 Uni life at University of St Gallen

Which classes do you recommend… or not?

I don't recommend any of the mandatory classes for students there as the classes are overfilled and the professors are bad. And rude too. Professors were very unapproachable at HSG

Do you have some tips?

Careful with the bidding!!! If you come for universities like mine, where all your classes are picked for you, it is a little different that you have to make sure your schedule doesn't clash. Use the Biddit website from the student government to check that it doesn't clash BEFORE the bidding process Campus was also super boring. Most of the campus is just boring exposed bricks. The new building, The Square, is nice and modern but reminds me a bit of a hospital. Also, after like 7:45 in the morning, good luck finding a study spot anywhere in the uni. If you want to study in the library or in the Square, best arrive early!! (there are lines in front of the school at 7:30 already with people waiting to secure a spot)

✈️ Travel

Best trips to do?

One good thing is the trips. Super good location. Can take the train almost anywhere. In an hour you can get to a lot of different mountains for hikes, 1h train to Lichtenstein (day trip only), 2.5 train to Munich so you can go to Oktoberfest if you are there in the fall, then also the rest of Switzerland there are so many beautiful spots to travel too. Get the "Half Fare" ticket from SBB (the Swiss train operator) to get half price on all train and bus rides. Super worth it because St Gallen is super boring, so you will travel a lot. Zurich airport is an hour by train away in case you want to fly somewhere. Most classes don't have mandatory attendance so you can do longer trips and skip some classes.

🌆 St Gallen vibe

What do you absolutely need to know to live your best life in St Gallen?

Everything is expensive AF, city is super safe, very boring tho. Shops close around 18h on weekdays, and after that the city dies. On weekends (especially Sundays) you wont see a soul in town. Most HSG students also travel or go home then, so its hard to hang out with them then too. There are also only limited food options, but all very good (but again, expensive)

Yeah, it's nice to have every exchange student in a single building !

🍻 Social Life

What are some top bars, clubs, or events you recommend?

Very few parties here, except the big ones - Halloween or OLMA - which are great.

🎓 Uni life at OST

Classes here are easy in general, except the financial ones and the "big projects" ones.

Do you have some tips?

Yess! Campus is awesome, the registration is very easy, everyone is here to help you being more integrated - we even have buddies!

Coliving / Shared House

How much was the rent per month?

800 CHF

Where was it located?

10/15min with bus and 30min walking to university and city center

Would you recommend it?

It was really nice because there are only exchange students in all thé building and you can share beautiful moments with. My house was far from university and city center but university offer more rooms close to it. It was expensive compared to rent a room in st gallen without university but for only 4 months it is easier.

🍻 Social Life

What are some top bars, clubs, or events you recommend?

It is a small city with not lot of bars or club but it was nice and affordable compared to other thinks that are more expensive. The buddysystem organised lot of activites for exchange students do you are not bored and you can explore switzerland from your own side.

🎓 Uni life at University of St. Gallen

Which classes do you recommend… or not?

You can choose what courses you want to follow but the level is high even for bachelor courses. If you want to enjoy your erasmus, I recommanded to follow course with team works and not writting exams, the workload will be lighter. Specific courses and finance courses are complicated.

Do you have some tips?

The campus is cool and modern and registration too because it is switzerland and the university is well organised. I think I would pick the same uni but not the same courses.

✈️ Travel

Best trips to do?

You can easier take the train and go everywhere you want in switzerland and also in Europe and Zurich is in 1 hour by train from St. Gallen. The buddysystem organise a ski weekend and hiking trip and you just to Pay and go !

🌆 St Gallen vibe

What do you absolutely need to know to live your best life in St Gallen?

Not lot of things to do, but there are the church and the library that is in the Unesco. But there city is pretty but Little.

💡 Other Tips

Just participate to buddysystem’s events and enjoy your erasmus even if Life is expensive and courses are complicated
