Daejeon is Korea's science capital: a calm, central, student-and-researcher city built around KAIST and a clutch of universities, with unbeatable rail links to the rest of the country.

Partners & Perks

Verified housing partners and student perks in Daejeon: no blind deposits, no ghost landlords. Grab one before someone in your group does.

We’re still lining up verified partners in Daejeon. In the meantime, ask the Daejeon group for the housing leads students are using right now.

Daejeon sits dead centre in Korea, which makes it the best-connected base for travelling the country, and it's a genuine university town powered by KAIST, Chungnam National University and the Daedeok research cluster. It's more relaxed and affordable than Seoul, with hot springs, mountains and a famous bakery, plus a sizeable international research community. If you want a quieter, focused exchange with the whole country in reach, this is it.

  • Home to KAIST, one of Asia's top science-and-tech universities, plus CNU and Woosong.
  • A central location and KTX hub, so everywhere in Korea is a short train away.
  • Cheaper and calmer than Seoul, with hot springs and mountains close by.

The scene centres on the university streets, Gung-dong by Chungnam National and the areas near KAIST, and on Dunsan, the downtown district with the bars, restaurants and Timeworld mall. It's lower-key than Seoul, so student life leans on club activities, cafés and the tight campus communities. Yuseong's hot-spring spas are the local way to unwind.

  • Gung-dong, the CNU university street, for cheap student bars and late-night eats.
  • Dunsan for the bigger bars, restaurants and the Timeworld mall district.
  • Ask the Daejeon group on Studcasa about KAIST and CNU events and trips out of the city.

Daejeon is mid-priced for Korea and cheaper than Seoul, so budget about 1.1 to 1.5 million won (roughly 780 to 1,050 euros) a month. Rent is the main saving, with university dorms and one-rooms both affordable. Cafeterias, street food and the famous Sungsimdang bakery keep eating cheap, and the compact city keeps transport costs low.

  • A one-room or goshiwon runs about 300,000 to 550,000 won a month.
  • University cafeterias and Gung-dong eateries do meals for 4,000 to 8,000 won.
  • Load a T-money or Hanaro card for the subway line and city buses.

University dormitories at KAIST and CNU are the easiest and most social first option; otherwise one-rooms and goshiwon cluster near the campuses in Gung-dong, Eoeun-dong and around KAIST. Private rentals want a deposit, so read the wolse terms. The city is spread out, so pick a place near your campus and a bus route.

  • Apply for KAIST or CNU dormitories early; they're cheapest and most sociable.
  • Look in Gung-dong and Eoeun-dong (near CNU) or around KAIST for one-rooms.
  • Use the Studcasa Daejeon group to find rooms and flatmates before term.

Daejeon has a single subway line (Line 1) linking the KTX station, downtown Dunsan and the west, but you'll use buses more since they reach the universities and suburbs. A T-money card covers both. The city is flat enough to cycle, and taxis are cheap for shorter hops.

  • Use a T-money card on the Line 1 subway and the extensive bus network.
  • Buses reach the campuses better than the single subway line, so check Naver Map routes.
  • Taxis are cheap for late nights; the KTX station is on the subway for onward travel.

KAIST is Daejeon's crown jewel, a world-leading science and engineering institute that teaches largely in English and hosts many international students. Chungnam National University is the big comprehensive campus, and Woosong, with its SolBridge business school, and Hannam add English-taught options. The research-city setting makes it a strong pick for STEM exchanges.

  • KAIST teaches mostly in English and is built around science, tech and research.
  • Woosong's SolBridge and CNU offer further English-taught courses for exchange students.

For a full exchange semester (over 90 days) you'll need a D-2 student visa, not visa-free entry. Your host university issues a Certificate of Admission; you take that plus proof of funds to a Korean embassy or consulate in your home country. The exact process depends on your nationality, so check your local consulate, but nearly every exchange student ends up on the D-2.

Once you land, register for a Residence Card (the old Alien Registration Card, or ARC) within 90 days at your local immigration office. Book the slot on the HiKorea site early, because appointments vanish fast. You'll also enrol in mandatory national health insurance (NHIS). Some nationalities need a K-ETA travel authorisation on top, so verify before you fly.

  • D-2 student visa, apply at your Korean consulate before flying
  • Certificate of Admission, issued by your host university
  • Residence Card (ARC), register within 90 days via HiKorea
  • Check whether your nationality also needs a K-ETA

Daejeon's food fame starts with Sungsimdang, a beloved bakery whose fried soboro and chive breads draw queues and shipping orders nationwide. Beyond it, the city does hearty Chungcheong-style fare, from dubu duruchigi (spicy stir-fried tofu) to kalguksu noodles, and the Yuseong district pairs eating with a soak in the hot springs.

  • Queue at Sungsimdang for its fried soboro bun and chive bread, a national icon.
  • Try dubu duruchigi (spicy tofu) and hand-cut kalguksu noodles, local staples.
  • Combine dinner with a hot-spring soak in Yuseong.

Dunsan is the modern downtown of government complex, malls, bars and restaurants; Yuseong is the hot-spring and university district in the west, near KAIST and CNU; Gung-dong is the student street by CNU; and Eunhaeng-dong is the older, grittier original centre. Base yourself by your campus, with Dunsan the liveliest all-rounder.

  • Dunsan: downtown nightlife, shopping and restaurants; the busiest district.
  • Yuseong: hot springs and universities, greener and student-friendly.
  • Gung-dong: the CNU student street, cheap and lively.

Daejeon's whole selling point for travel is its centrality. Seoul is under an hour by KTX; the Baekje heritage towns of Gongju and Buyeo are an hour by bus; and Jeonju, with its hanok village and legendary bibimbap, is close too. Gyeryongsan and Songnisan national parks put good hiking within easy reach.

  • Seoul (under 1 hour by KTX) whenever you want the big city.
  • Jeonju (about 1 hour) for the hanok village and Korea's best bibimbap.
  • Gongju and Buyeo (about 1 hour) for Baekje-era UNESCO heritage sites.

Lean into Daejeon's centrality: base your travelling here and you'll cover Korea cheaply. It's a quieter city, so join clubs and language exchanges to build a social life rather than waiting for it to find you. Sort your ARC, T-money and Naver Map early, and don't leave without shipping a Sungsimdang box home.

  • Use the KTX hub to travel most weekends; it's Daejeon's biggest perk.
  • Join a university club or language exchange, as the social scene rewards effort.
  • Set up your ARC, bank account and Naver and Kakao apps in the first weeks.

🏠 Housing

What kind of place was it?

Student Residence

How much was the rent per month?

300

Where was it located?

max 3min away from my friends and 20 minutes away from the university

Would you recommend it?

At first, I made the mistake of going to the university's dormitory that provided terrible living conditions and moved out not without struggles. Finding a student apartment (typical Korean apartments: a studio with a bed and a desk a small kitchen and bathroom) was very easy, the agents are extremely responsive and quick to react so I would totally recommend to go directly through them and not even try to stay at the dorms.

🍻 Social Life

What are some top bars, clubs, or events you recommend?

The party street in Daejeon is called Dunsan. The clubs students usually go to are Seven's and Waikiki. But we also go a lot to Seoul and party in Hongdae or Itaewon.

🎓 Uni life at Solbridge International University

Which classes do you recommend… or not?

Very chill semester. None of the classes are really challenging or demanding. I do recommend to take classes that have an Asian focus to them to understand how that side of the world works (Asian Management, Korean culture).

Do you have some tips?

The campus is very cool and modern everything is easy. Classes are not difficult and it feels like most students are visiting students. If would probably pick it again if I wanted to travel and not be too stressed about academics. However, it's a goos place to meet people and enjoy your exchange experience to the max but I don't recommend it for people who want an academically challenging and rewarding experience during their exchange.

✈️ Travel

Best trips to do?

It's very easy to move around Korea from Daejeon by taking the bus (klook website) or the train through the Korail website (you can choose between KTX- the fastest train and MTX). Best places to visit are: Seoul, Busan, Gyeongju and others. However, it takes a bit more time to move between countries as Korea is a bit far from everything approx. 4hours.

🌆 Daejeon vibe

What do you absolutely need to know to live your best life in Daejeon?

Life in Daejeon is nice and affordable. People usually eat out everyday (my favourite restaurant has meals for 5euros) and we usually hangout with our friends everyday. It's quite small so we do go to the same places but if you are well surrounded, no problem!

💡 Other Tips

DO NOT GO TO THE SOLGEO DORMS! From a financial perspective, getting an apartment is around the same price but do not make the same mistake I did... Koreans don't speak english but if you have Naver Map and KakaoTalk everything will be fine. Get your sim cards outside the airport (everything is much cheaper outside). Be open to meeting new people!

🏠 Housing

What kind of place was it?

Classic Apartment

How much was the rent per month?

180€ / month

Where was it located?

In Gayang-dong 20min walking from Solbridge

Would you recommend it?

I would pick the same landlord, you can find your apartment in 2 hours. In Korea overall it's really fast and cheap, but this landlord is the one of the only one who speaks english in Daejeon.

🍻 Social Life

What are some top bars, clubs, or events you recommend?

Lot of bars everywhere, Korean drink a lot. To party go to Dunsan, lot of people go direclty to Séoul in Hongdae.

🎓 Uni life at Solbridge

Which classes do you recommend… or not?

Lot of bullshit class, if you want to work you need to take classes related to finance. Entrepreneuship and languages classes are also good. Other classes depend a lot on your teacher and your luck.

Do you have some tips?

The campus is really nice (swimming pool, different places to eat, gym, shuttle bus) Just a bit far away from the dorm (40min walking / 10min by bus). Great student life (student council, event, associations) I would chose the same uni again !!

✈️ Travel

Best trips to do?

Busan ! Korea is small, so you can go everywhere really easy by bus or train. (1h by train from Seoul and 2/3h by bus)

🌆 Daejeon vibe

What do you absolutely need to know to live your best life in Daejeon?

Korea is really safe. Daejeon has a lot of restaurants and coffee shop. Lot of activities too (karaoke, bowling, golfing...)

💡 Other Tips
