Bratislava is Europe most underrated capital - a compact, walkable Old Town on the Danube, an hour from Vienna and cheap enough to actually enjoy on a student budget. It flies under the radar, which is exactly why it makes such an easy, affordable exchange base.

Partners & Perks

Verified housing partners and student perks in Bratislava: no blind deposits, no ghost landlords. Grab one before someone in your group does.

We’re still lining up verified partners in Bratislava. In the meantime, ask the Bratislava group for the housing leads students are using right now.

Bratislava is small, safe and central: you can walk across the Old Town in 15 minutes, yet Vienna is an hour away and Budapest and Prague are a short hop beyond. It is one of the EU cheapest capitals, home to Comenius University and a growing tech scene, and it sits amid wine country on the Danube. Its low profile keeps prices and crowds down while everything you need stays close.

  • One of the cheapest capital cities in the EU for students.
  • Vienna is an hour away by train, bus or even a Danube boat.
  • Home to Comenius University and the Slovak University of Technology (STU).

The compact Old Town packs in cheap bars and pubs where a good local beer costs a couple of euros, and terraces spill onto the Danube embankment in warmer months. Student life clusters around the Mlynska dolina dorms and the university faculties, and ESN Bratislava runs a busy calendar of trips and parties. With Vienna so close, the international crowd here treats the whole region as its playground.

  • Old Town pubs pour excellent Slovak and Czech beer for around 2 euros a pint.
  • Riverside terraces and the Magio Beach bars along the Danube in summer.
  • Follow ESN Bratislava for pub crawls, trips and Vienna day-outs.

Bratislava is genuinely cheap for a capital - budget roughly 700 to 1,050 euros a month. A room runs 300 to 450 euros, student-dorm places far less, and a full pub meal with a beer comes in under 12 euros. The compact size and cheap transit keep costs down, and the Stara trznica market and local pubs make everyday life affordable.

  • Rooms typically 300 to 450 euros; the Mlynska dolina student dorms are cheaper still.
  • A hearty pub lunch with a beer costs under 12 euros; student menus are cheaper.
  • The DPB student transit pass is inexpensive - register with your ISIC card.

Many exchange students get a place in the Mlynska dolina student dormitories, the huge complex near the science faculties - apply early through your host university. For private flats, Petrzalka across the Danube is the cheapest and most student-heavy area, while the Old Town and Ruzinov are pricier but central. Use Facebook groups and nehnutelnosti.sk, and view before paying any deposit.

  • Apply early for a Mlynska dolina dorm room through your host university.
  • Petrzalka for the cheapest private rooms; Ruzinov and Stare Mesto for central options.
  • Search nehnutelnosti.sk and student Facebook groups; the Studcasa Bratislava group flags rooms.

Bratislava runs on trams, trolleybuses and buses (DPB) - there is no metro, but the city is small enough that you will walk much of it anyway. An ISIC-linked student pass makes the network very cheap, and shared e-scooters cover short hops. Trains and buses to Vienna and the wine towns leave from the main and Petrzalka stations. Validate your ticket on board to avoid fines.

  • Buy a discounted DPB student pass with your ISIC card and load it on the app.
  • The Old Town is walkable end to end; e-scooters cover the rest.
  • Trains to Vienna run frequently from Bratislava main station (Hlavna stanica).

Comenius University (Univerzita Komenskeho), founded in 1919, is Slovakia largest and oldest, covering medicine, law, arts and sciences, and hosts many exchange students. The Slovak University of Technology (STU) is the leading engineering school, and the University of Economics rounds out the main options. Some courses run in English, especially for Erasmus students; teaching tends to be fairly traditional and lecture-based.

  • Comenius University is the largest and most exchange-friendly institution.
  • STU covers engineering and tech; the University of Economics handles business.

Slovakia is an EU and Schengen member, so it hinges on your nationality. EU/EEA citizens can move freely and only need to register their residence with the foreign police within the first days if staying beyond three months, a quick formality.

Non-EU students, including those from the UK, US, Canada and Australia, generally need a national (D) visa or temporary residence for study, arranged through a Slovak embassy before travelling, with proof of funds, accommodation and health insurance. The process can be slow and paperwork-heavy, so start months ahead and get documents translated and certified where required.

  • EU/EEA, free movement; register with the foreign police if staying over 3 months
  • Non-EU, national D-visa or temporary residence for study via a Slovak embassy
  • Start early; expect translated, certified documents and proof of funds

The national dish is bryndzove halusky - soft potato dumplings in sheep cheese with bacon - hearty, cheap and worth trying early. Warm up with kapustnica cabbage soup, and pair meals with excellent, little-known Slovak wine from the nearby Small Carpathians. The Stara trznica market hall hosts weekend food markets, and the pub culture, with its cheap and superb beer, is central to everyday life.

  • Order bryndzove halusky at a traditional Slovak pub like Slovak Pub.
  • Try local wine from Raca and the Small Carpathians - a well-kept secret.
  • Visit the Stara trznica market hall for weekend food and craft markets.

The Stare Mesto (Old Town) is the compact, walkable historic heart where most of the life is. Petrzalka, the vast panel-block district across the Danube, is where most students live cheaply and is better than its Communist-era looks suggest. Ruzinov is a comfortable residential area near the centre, while Karlova Ves and Dlhe diely sit near the university dorms and faculties.

  • Stare Mesto for central, walkable life (at higher rents).
  • Petrzalka for the cheapest rooms and a big student presence.
  • Karlova Ves and Dlhe diely to be near the campus and dorms.

Bratislava position is unbeatable for weekends. Vienna is an hour away by train, bus or a Danube boat, Budapest around two and a half hours, and Prague four by train. On the doorstep, Devin Castle sits at the city edge and the Small Carpathian wine towns of Svaty Jur, Pezinok and Modra are half an hour out. For mountains, the High Tatras are a few hours north for hiking and skiing.

  • Vienna in an hour - go by train, bus or Danube boat (Twin City Liner).
  • The Small Carpathian wine route (Pezinok, Modra) is 30 minutes away.
  • The High Tatras, a few hours north, for hiking in summer and skiing in winter.

Get an ISIC card sorted early - it unlocks the cheap transit pass and student discounts across the region. Validate every tram and bus ticket on board, as inspectors do fine. Use Vienna airport, which is closer and often cheaper than Bratislava own, for flights home. And do not judge Petrzalka by its concrete looks; it is safe, cheap and where student life actually happens.

  • Sort an ISIC card first - it is the key to student transit and discounts.
  • Fly via Vienna Airport (about an hour away) for more and cheaper connections.

🏠 Housing

What kind of place was it?

Classic Apartment

How much was the rent per month?

600

Where was it located?

In Ruzinov, 15 minutes by tram from the old town (city centre) and 20 minutes by foot from the street with all the good bars.

Would you recommend it?

I loved Bratislava because its a city where you can do everything by foot. It's not a big city but it has everything you need: there's the old town which is very cute, there are big shopping malls. It's not an expensive city, the price of one pint of beer is 2,5. And the best thing is that you have lots of other capitals near that you can visit just by taking a flixbus (Budapest, Vienna, Zagreb, Prague, Krakow...).

🍻 Social Life

What are some top bars, clubs, or events you recommend?

The goodzone (lots of students go there), then when it closes you can go the Starter bar (lots of students too) and it closes late. There are bars in the old town but it's usually more expensive. For the clubs there's Wax2, sometimes there's a club open on a barge ("peniche"), the šafko club... Also, at the beginning of the year there are lots of events organized by ESN (Erasmus Student Network) so don't miss out.

🎓 Uni life at EUBA

Which classes do you recommend… or not?

Economic Policy, Accounting are pretty easy if you already have basics in those courses. DON'T take Quantitative Methods, Taxation or Operations Research.

Do you have some tips?

The campus is very big, registration was pretty easy. At the start of the year you can change your courses as many times as you want (there's still a deadline), so when you choose your courses in june you can still change them when you arrive. I like my university but Comenius is pretty nice too (my roomate only has classes monday and tuesday).

✈️ Travel

Best trips to do?

Just with flixbus you can go to a lot of cities : Budapest, Prague, Vienna, Zagreb, Krakow. Check ryanair too, sometimes you have very very cheap flights.

🌆 Bratislava vibe

What do you absolutely need to know to live your best life in Bratislava?

For transportation you can buy a travel card just for 50 euros for three months. You can use trams and buses. It's a very safe city, you can walk home at 4 in the morning no one will bother you.
