Kuala Lumpur is a warm, multicultural capital where Malay, Chinese and Indian cultures share the same streets, markets and food courts. It is affordable, English-friendly and one of the easiest cities in Asia to settle into as an exchange student.

Partners & Perks

Verified housing partners and student perks in Kuala Lumpur: no blind deposits, no ghost landlords. Grab one before someone in your group does.

We’re still lining up verified partners in Kuala Lumpur. In the meantime, ask the Kuala Lumpur group for the housing leads students are using right now.

Kuala Lumpur combines a low cost of living with a modern, English-speaking city and a genuinely diverse food and cultural scene. International branch campuses and strong local universities make it a real study hub, the transport network is cheap and growing, and Southeast Asia is on your doorstep for travel. The tropical heat and humidity are constant, and the afternoon downpours are part of the deal.

  • English is widely spoken, which makes settling in and daily life straightforward.
  • Budget airlines from KLIA reach the whole of Southeast Asia cheaply.

KL's social life runs from rooftop bars in Bukit Bintang to relaxed pubs in Bangsar, but the real institution is the 24-hour mamak stall. Late nights over teh tarik are where friendships are made.

  • Nights out run from the rooftop bars of Bukit Bintang to the relaxed pubs of Bangsar.
  • Late-night mamak stalls, open 24 hours, are where students actually gather over teh tarik.
  • Ask the Kuala Lumpur group on Studcasa which student areas near your campus are best.

Kuala Lumpur is the priciest city in Malaysia but still very affordable by global standards. Budget roughly 2,500 to 4,000 ringgit a month (about 500 to 800 euros).

  • A hawker or food-court meal is 8-15 ringgit; a mid-range restaurant dinner is around 30-50 ringgit.
  • A room in a shared condo near a university runs roughly 800-1,600 ringgit a month.
  • Get a Touch n Go card and its eWallet app for transport, tolls and many shops.

Shared condominiums, often with a pool and gym, are the typical student home and good value. Rooms are easy to find online in the main student suburbs.

  • Search iBilik and Mudah.my for rooms, and look at Subang Jaya, Bandar Sunway and Bangsar.
  • Ask the Kuala Lumpur group on Studcasa for flatmate leads before signing a tenancy.

KL has an expanding rail network of LRT, MRT and monorail lines, and a monthly pass makes it very cheap. When the rain hits, ride-hailing takes over.

  • A My50 pass gives a month of unlimited travel on RapidKL trains and buses.
  • Tap in with a Touch n Go card, and use Grab for door-to-door trips when the rain sets in.
  • Trains are cheap, with most single fares between 1.50 and 5 ringgit.

KL offers both a top national university and a cluster of Western branch campuses, nearly all teaching in English. That makes it an easy academic fit for exchange students.

  • The University of Malaya (UM) is the top national university, set in leafy Petaling Jaya.
  • Branch campuses such as Monash Malaysia, Nottingham Malaysia and Sunway teach in English on Western models.

This is the part that's more work than an EU Erasmus. Almost every international student, whatever your nationality, needs a Student Pass, arranged through EMGS (Education Malaysia Global Services) before you fly. Your host university's international office kicks off the process from your acceptance letter; you upload your passport, photos and a health declaration, then wait for a Visa Approval Letter (VAL).

You enter Malaysia on that VAL, do a local medical check, and get the Student Pass stickered into your passport after arrival. Budget roughly €300-500 in EMGS and processing fees and start early, a couple of months' lead time, because approvals can drag. Exact steps depend on your nationality, so follow whatever your uni's EMGS portal tells you.

  • Student Pass via EMGS, required for nearly all nationalities
  • Get your Visa Approval Letter (VAL) before you fly
  • Budget ~€300-500 in fees and start 2-3 months ahead

KL is one of Asia's great food cities precisely because three cuisines overlap on every street. Grazing hawker stalls and food courts is a daily joy.

  • Eat nasi lemak for breakfast, roti canai at a mamak, and banana-leaf rice in Brickfields (Little India).
  • Jalan Alor is the famous open-air street-food strip off Bukit Bintang.
  • Petaling Street in Chinatown mixes market stalls with classic Chinese hawker food.

From the high-rise centre to leafy cafe districts and the big student suburbs, KL has an area for every budget and mood. Rail links tie most of them together.

  • KLCC and Bukit Bintang are the central, high-rise heart with the Petronas Towers and nightlife.
  • Bangsar and TTDI are leafy, cafe-heavy areas popular with students and young professionals.
  • Bandar Sunway and Subang Jaya are the big student suburbs around Sunway and Monash.

KL is a superb base for Malaysia and the wider region, with hills, beaches and heritage towns all close. Cheap flights open up the rest of Southeast Asia.

  • Batu Caves is 30 minutes by KTM Komuter, and Genting Highlands a cool hour up the mountain.
  • Historic Melaka is a two-hour bus ride, and Penang about four hours or a short flight.
  • Singapore and southern Thailand are cheap, easy weekend flights.

KL is easy going, but the weather, the transport quirks and local etiquette are worth knowing early. Small adjustments make daily life smooth.

  • Carry an umbrella year-round for the near-daily afternoon downpours.
  • Use Grab rather than hailing taxis to avoid haggling over fares.
  • Dress modestly at mosques and remember it is a Muslim-majority country with local etiquette to respect.

🏠 Housing

What kind of place was it?

Coliving / Shared House

How much was the rent per month?

430€

Where was it located?

5 min from the University - DK Senza Residence

Would you recommend it?

The huge advantage of this housing is that it’s right across from the university, and many exchange students live here. However, the building is quite old and the apartments are sometimes not very clean or modern, and rather expensive for what they are. You really have to pay close attention to the room you choose before deciding to live here, I think, but in the end I’m happy to be living here.

🍻 Social Life

What are some top bars, clubs, or events you recommend?

I don’t think it’s a city that’s really made for partying, but it’s still very fun to go out in Kuala Lumpur! The downside is that alcohol is quite expensive, but it’s often free for European women in nightclubs. I recommend Kyo, it’s a very good club and I had a great time there, or otherwise Kuna at TREC.

🎓 Uni life at Taylor's University

Which classes do you recommend… or not?

I recommend the International Relations bachelor’s program, which is quite manageable for exchange students

Do you have some tips?

The university is amazing, the campus is huge and very modern, you feel great there! There are so many opportunities, events, clubs, and restaurants! At the beginning of the semester everything is clearly explained regarding how things work! I would go back if I could.

✈️ Travel

Best trips to do?

The advantage of the city is that it’s really well located, with direct flights to lots of nearby countries: Indonesia, Taiwan, Vietnam, Thailand (even by boat to some islands)… it’s amazing! You can also get to Singapore by bus. In Malaysia, there’s so much to see: paradise-like islands, mountainous landscapes, the real jungle—basically, you never get bored.

🌆 Kuala Lumpur vibe

What do you absolutely need to know to live your best life in Kuala Lumpur?

The city is very nice and quite cheap! You can try all kinds of Asian food, which is great! The only problem is the traffic, which is always congested, and I find it quite difficult to get around the city during rush hours. You also need to pay attention to the weather and the time of year, because of the rainy season… and it’s very hot here too.

💡 Other Tips

Come to Malaysia, it’s amazing!!!
