The Almaty TL;DR

Warm, hospitable and cheap, centred on Almaty's cafes and clubs, though the scene runs mostly in Russian and Kazakh rather than one big Erasmus bubble.

Almaty is Kazakhstan's green, cosmopolitan heart, a leafy grid city rising toward the snow-capped Tian Shan, with world-class skiing 40 minutes from the centre. Cheap, mountainous and surprisingly cool, it is an off-the-beaten-track exchange that pays off.

Partners & Perks

Verified housing partners and student perks in Almaty: no blind deposits, no ghost landlords. Grab one before someone in your group does.

We’re still lining up verified partners in Almaty. In the meantime, ask the Almaty group for the housing leads students are using right now.

Almaty sits dramatically at the foot of the Tian Shan mountains, so you can be in a lecture in the morning and on a ski slope or by an alpine lake in the afternoon. It is Kazakhstan's cultural and student capital, greener and more relaxed than the purpose-built capital Astana, and remarkably cheap for what you get. English-taught programmes at universities like KIMEP make it an accessible, adventurous choice.

  • Al-Farabi Kazakh National University (KazNU), the largest and most prestigious public university
  • KIMEP University, English-language and internationally focused, strong in business and economics
  • Kazakh-British Technical University (KBTU) and AlmaU for more English-taught options

Almaty has the country's liveliest student scene, centred on the cafes, craft-beer bars and clubs around the central grid and the Arbat pedestrian street. Coffee culture is huge, the restaurant scene is genuinely excellent, and weekends pull everyone toward the mountains. The international student crowd, especially around KIMEP, makes it easy to find your feet.

  • Bars and clubs cluster around the centre and the Arbat; the craft-beer scene is booming
  • Weekend trips to Shymbulak and the lakes are the real social glue here
  • Ask the Almaty group on Studcasa about hikes, ski days and student nights

Almaty is very cheap by European standards, so budget around EUR 600 to EUR 900 a month including rent, less if you live frugally. A room in a shared flat runs roughly 120,000 to 220,000 tenge (about EUR 250 to EUR 450), and eating out is inexpensive, especially at markets and canteens. Taxis via inDrive and Yandex cost a couple of euros a ride.

  • A room in a shared flat is around 120,000 to 220,000 tenge a month (EUR 250 to 450)
  • Eat cheaply at the Green Bazaar and local stolovaya canteens; a plate of plov costs a few euros
  • inDrive and Yandex Go taxis are the cheap, standard way to get around after dark

Most students rent flats through Krisha.kz, the main Kazakh property site, or via university dorms and Telegram and WhatsApp groups. The city slopes uphill toward the mountains, and the higher southern districts are pricier and greener. Furnished flats are the norm and cheap, but agree terms clearly and check the heating for winter.

  • Krisha.kz is the main site for flats and rooms; expect to pay an agent fee
  • University dormitories are the cheapest option if you want simple and sorted
  • Ask the Almaty group on Studcasa about flatshares and reliable landlords

Almaty has a clean, cheap single-line metro plus an extensive bus and trolleybus network, all paid with the Onay! transit card. Fares are tiny, but the app-based taxis (inDrive, where you name your price, and Yandex Go) are so cheap that many students use them constantly. The flat grid is walkable and increasingly bike-friendly.

  • Buy an Onay! card for the metro, buses and trolleybuses; fares are very low
  • inDrive and Yandex Go are cheap and everywhere; inDrive lets you set your fare
  • The central grid is walkable, with aryk-lined avenues and bike hire in summer

The academic year runs two semesters, roughly September to January and February to June, with growing English-taught provision at KIMEP, KBTU and AlmaU. Teaching styles vary from Soviet-influenced formality at the big public universities to a Western model at the private ones. Expect more structure and contact hours than in Northern Europe.

This hinges on your passport, so check your nearest Kazakh consulate's rules early. Citizens of the EU, UK, US and many other countries get 30 days visa-free on arrival, which is fine for a short visit but not a full semester. For a study stay you need a student visa, and your host university starts the process by issuing an official invitation once you're accepted.

With that invitation you apply for the study visa at a Kazakh embassy before travelling (or convert on arrival where it's allowed). The bit students forget: once you land you must be registered with the migration service, usually within a few days. Your university or dorm normally handles it, but confirm it's actually done or you'll cop a fine on the way out.

  • Many nationalities: 30 days visa-free, not enough for a semester
  • Study visa needs a university invitation letter
  • Register with the migration service within days of arriving
  • Keep your migration card and passport stamps safe

Kazakh food is meat-heavy and hearty, from beshbarmak, the national dish of boiled meat and noodles, to manti, lagman and shashlik, layered with Russian, Uyghur and Korean influences from the city's mixed communities. The Green Bazaar is the place to graze and shop. Tea is constant, and the cafe and restaurant scene is far more sophisticated than outsiders expect.

  • Try beshbarmak, plov and manti; the Korean salads at the Green Bazaar are a local surprise
  • Shop and snack at the Green Bazaar (Zelyony Bazar) in the centre
  • Sample kymyz (fermented mare's milk) once, and drink a lot of tea

The central grid, the Golden Square around Panfilov Park and Abai Avenue, is the walkable heart with the best cafes and nightlife. The higher southern districts toward the mountains, Bostandyk and the Samal microdistricts, are greener and more desirable, while Auezov and the northern areas are cheaper. KazNU has its own campus town to the west.

  • The central Golden Square for cafes, nightlife and walkability
  • Bostandyk and Samal, higher up toward the mountains, greener and pricier
  • Auezov and the lower districts for cheaper rents

The mountains on Almaty's doorstep are the whole point. Medeu's skating rink and the Shymbulak ski resort are 40 minutes up the valley by road and cable car, the turquoise Big Almaty Lake an hour away, and the dramatic Charyn Canyon a few hours east. The Kolsai and Kaindy lakes make a stunning longer weekend.

  • Medeu and Shymbulak ski resort, 30 to 40 minutes up the valley by cable car
  • Big Almaty Lake, a turquoise alpine lake about an hour from the centre
  • Charyn Canyon (around 3 hours) and the Kolsai Lakes for a weekend in the wild

Download inDrive and Yandex Go on arrival; they are how everyone gets around cheaply and safely. Get a local SIM (Beeline, Kcell or Tele2) for cheap data, and carry some cash, as small places and markets prefer it. Winters are cold and snowy but bright, so pack proper layers and make the most of the ski season on your doorstep.

  • Install inDrive and Yandex Go, plus 2GIS for offline maps and listings
  • Buy a local SIM (Beeline, Kcell or Tele2) for cheap mobile data
  • Bring warm winter gear; the flip side is superb, cheap skiing at Shymbulak
