Nicosia is the world's last divided capital, a warm, walled inland city where you can cross from the Greek south to the Turkish north on foot down Ledra Street. It blends an ancient old town with a lively student scene, and beaches and mountains are under an hour away.

Partners & Perks

We’re still lining up verified partners in Nicosia. In the meantime, ask the Nicosia group for the housing leads students are using right now.

Nicosia is unlike any other European capital: a walled old town wrapped in Venetian ramparts, cut in two by the UN buffer zone, where you can stroll from the Greek Cypriot south into the Turkish Cypriot north through the Ledra Street checkpoint. It is sunny almost year-round, English is spoken everywhere, and its universities draw a big international crowd. Beaches and the Troodos Mountains are both under an hour away.

  • University of Cyprus (UCY), the leading public university, on the Aglantzia and old-town campuses
  • University of Nicosia (UNIC), the largest private university, with a well-known medical school
  • European University Cyprus (EUC) and Frederick University for more English-taught options

Student life spills across the old town's cafes and bars, especially around Faneromeni Square and the restored Ledras and Onasagorou streets. Cypriots take their coffee and their nights out slowly, so expect long evenings over frappe and meze that drift into bar-hopping. The big private universities give the city a genuinely international, English-speaking social scene.

  • Faneromeni Square and the old town for late-night bars and cafes
  • Nurse a frappe for hours the local way, then move on to meze and drinks
  • Ask the Nicosia group on Studcasa which student nights and Erasmus events are worth it

Nicosia is affordable by EU standards, so budget around EUR 700 to EUR 1,050 a month including rent. A room in a shared flat runs roughly EUR 300 to EUR 500, and eating out is cheap if you stick to souvla and meze rather than tourist spots. Buses are inexpensive with a student pass, though many students get by on Bolt taxis.

  • A room in a shared flat is EUR 300 to 500 a month, cheaper in Strovolos and Aglantzia
  • Eat well for little at souvlatzidiko grills; a frappe and a sandwich cost a few euros
  • Bolt taxis are cheap and quick; a student bus pass covers the city routes

Most students rent shared flats near their university, around Aglantzia for UCY and Engomi and Makedonitissa for UNIC and EUC. The market moves through Facebook groups, Bazaraki (the local classifieds site) and word of mouth. Flats are plentiful and cheaper than Western Europe, but check for heating, as winter nights get surprisingly cold.

  • Bazaraki.com is the main local classifieds site for rooms and flats
  • Look in Engomi and Aglantzia to be near the main campuses
  • Ask the Nicosia group on Studcasa about rooms as exchange students move on

Nicosia has no metro or tram, so it runs on buses and cars; the old town is walkable, but the sprawl beyond needs wheels. City buses are cheap with a student pass but not frequent, so most students lean on Bolt taxis, which are quick and inexpensive. Many bring or hire a scooter or bike for the flat, sunny streets.

  • Use the city buses with a student pass, though services thin out in the evening
  • Bolt is the default for quick, cheap rides across the city
  • The old town within the walls is easily walked or cycled

The academic year runs two semesters, roughly September to January and February to June, with a growing amount of English-taught teaching, especially at the private universities. UNIC and EUC are geared to international students, while UCY offers more in Greek. Expect a relaxed pace and a Mediterranean approach to timekeeping.

This depends entirely on your passport. If you're an EU, EEA or Swiss national you need no visa at all: turn up with your ID card or passport and just register locally if you stay past three months. That covers most Erasmus students, who breeze in.

Everyone else (UK, US, Canada, Australia and beyond) needs a national student visa or entry permit for stays over 90 days, plus proof of enrolment, funds, insurance and an address. Note that Cyprus is in the EU but not the Schengen area, so a Schengen visa won't cover it. Start the paperwork early, because it's slow.

  • EU/EEA/Swiss: no visa, just register if staying 90+ days
  • Non-EU: national student visa/permit for 90+ days
  • Cyprus is EU but NOT Schengen, a Schengen visa won't work
  • Bring proof of enrolment, funds, insurance and an address

Cypriot food is a highlight: long meze spreads, grilled halloumi, souvla and sheftalia, washed down with local wine or zivania. Coffee culture is central, from thick Cypriot coffee to the ever-present frappe, and the pace of life is unhurried. The divided city itself is a living history lesson well worth exploring on both sides.

  • Order a full meze once; it arrives as a dozen small plates and keeps coming
  • Try grilled halloumi, souvla and loukoumades, and finish with a frappe
  • Cross the Ledra Street checkpoint to the northern side for a different food scene, passport in hand

The walled old town is the historic and social core, walkable and full of cafes. Engomi and Makedonitissa to the west host the private universities and much of the student housing, Aglantzia sits by the UCY campus, and Strovolos is a large, practical residential district. The northern side has its own atmospheric old quarter around Kyrenia Gate.

  • The old town within the Venetian walls, central and full of life
  • Engomi and Makedonitissa, near UNIC and EUC, popular with students
  • Aglantzia for UCY; Strovolos for cheaper, quieter flats

For a small island, Cyprus packs a lot within an hour of the capital. The Troodos Mountains offer hiking in summer and actual skiing on Mount Olympus in winter, while Larnaca's beaches and airport are 45 minutes away. Limassol, Ayia Napa and Paphos round out the coast, and you can even cross north to Kyrenia.

  • Troodos Mountains, about 45 minutes, for hiking and winter skiing on Mount Olympus
  • Larnaca's beaches and airport in 45 minutes; Limassol and Ayia Napa within the hour
  • Cross the Green Line to Kyrenia (Girne) in the north for the harbour and castle

Carry your passport if you plan to cross to the northern side, even just for lunch, as it is a genuine border crossing. Summers are fiercely hot and inland Nicosia bakes, so plan errands for morning or evening, and don't underestimate the chilly winter nights indoors. Learning a few words of Greek goes a long way with locals.

  • Keep your passport handy for crossing the Green Line at Ledra Street
  • Avoid midday errands in summer; inland Nicosia gets extremely hot
  • Pack a warm layer; homes are built for heat and winter evenings feel cold indoors

City center

Would you recommend it?

I recommend it, but you need to be aware that the guy who manage that can be a little bit stressful (pay now, you have to do that quickly etc) The location is perfect, you are with all the erasmus and next to the club My building (oxy building) was the best one because it was new, on the contrary, the erasmus building was a little bit old and the furniture not really good

🍻 Social Life

What are some top bars, clubs, or events you recommend?

You need to go with the erasmus life because there are nothing else in nicosie. The Kala is a nice bar, ithaki a good club, central is a good club too but you have Greek music at 4am About events : paphos trip, montain trip, boat parties etc

🎓 Uni life at Unic

Which classes do you recommend… or not?

Marketing was ok, operation management too Build your planing to have just courses the Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday if you can But don't take ethic class it was awful

Do you have some tips?

The campus is mid but ok, and I didn't have the choice for the campus

✈️ Travel

Best trips to do?

Jordanie, turquie, Égypte, Emirats, Grèce

🌆 Nicosia vibe

What do you absolutely need to know to live your best life in Nicosia?

There is nothing to do there except with erasmus. The bus is expensive but you need to take your card. On summer everyone leave nicosie to go to the beach (ayia napa)

💡 Other Tips

Be careful with ELN (different organisation than ESN which is the official organisation). Eln is manage strangely. You won't have any problem with ESN. Nicosie is not a beautiful city There is no problem about going to the turkish side and taking a flight with Ercan airport The life can be expensive if you only take import products in the supermarket. You can do your groceries in the mall next to Unic No problem during the night life, even as a girl Enjoy your life there and go to coffee therapy (best coffee in town )
