Cameroon's hilly capital, Yaounde is a green, spread-out city of seven hills where francophone university life, bustling markets and Central African culture come together.

We’re still lining up verified partners in Yaounde. In the meantime, ask the Yaounde group for the housing leads students are using right now.

Set across seven forested hills, Yaounde is Cameroon's political capital and a major university centre, offering a real immersion in Central African life far off the usual tourist trail. It is a francophone city where the University of Yaounde I and the Catholic University anchor a big student population, and the cooler highland climate makes it pleasant year-round. You will get warm hospitality, a rich food and music scene, and easy access to the coast and rainforest.

  • University of Yaounde I and II and the Catholic University (UCAC) host international students
  • The highland setting keeps the climate mild for most of the year
  • It is a genuine immersion in francophone Central African life

Student life clusters around the Ngoa-Ekelle campus of Yaounde I and the cafes, bars and cheap eateries nearby. Nights out and live music happen in areas like Bastos and around the Warda and Mvog-Mbi districts, with Cameroonian makossa and bikutsi always close. It is a sociable, welcoming scene where a little French takes you a long way and student friendships form fast.

  • Base your social life around the Ngoa-Ekelle campus and its cheap eateries
  • Catch live makossa and bikutsi music in Bastos and central bars
  • Practise French and Pidgin with classmates to settle in quickly

Yaounde is very affordable, so budget around 250,000-450,000 FCFA (roughly 400-700 euros) a month, covering a modest room, food and transport. Rent for a simple studio runs from around 60,000-150,000 FCFA depending on the area. Street food and local markets keep everyday costs remarkably low, though imported goods are pricey.

  • Eat at local spots and street stalls, where grilled fish or poulet DG costs a few thousand francs
  • Shop at Mokolo and Mfoundi markets for cheap fresh produce
  • Use shared yellow taxis and set up MTN or Orange Mobile Money for daily payments

There is limited formal student housing, so most students rent a studio or share, arranged through word of mouth, local agents or noticeboards rather than websites. Bastos is the upmarket, safer expat area, while Ngoa-Ekelle, Melen and Mvog-Betsi are closer to campus and cheaper. Always view a place, agree terms clearly, and expect to pay several months' rent plus a deposit upfront.

  • Look near campus in Ngoa-Ekelle and Melen, or in leafier, pricier Bastos
  • Arrange viewings through classmates and local agents, as word of mouth rules here
  • Ask the Yaounde group on Studcasa for trusted contacts and fair-rent guidance

Yaounde has no metro, so you will move by shared yellow taxis: you hail one, state your direction, and share with others going the same way for a fixed low fare. Moto-taxis (locally called bendskin) are faster through traffic but riskier. For intercity travel, reputable coach companies like Touristique Express run comfortable buses to Douala and beyond from their own terminals.

  • Hail shared yellow taxis and agree the fare (usually a few hundred francs) before getting in
  • Use moto-taxis only if you must, and insist on a helmet and a careful rider
  • Book intercity coaches with Touristique Express or General Voyages for Douala trips

The University of Yaounde I is the country's flagship for sciences and medicine, Yaounde II covers law, economics and politics, and the Catholic University (UCAC) is well regarded and smaller. Teaching is formal, lecture-led and conducted mainly in French, with large classes at the public universities. English-taught options exist but are limited, so French really helps.

  • Yaounde I for sciences and engineering; Yaounde II for law and economics; UCAC for smaller classes
  • Strong French is essential for most public-university courses

It depends on your nationality, but the short version is that almost everyone needs a long-stay student visa arranged before you fly, through a Cameroonian embassy or consulate. Expect to show your admission letter, proof of funds, accommodation details, a return ticket and a yellow-fever vaccination certificate, plus a fee around €100. Processing can be slow and bureaucratic, so start two to three months out.

A yellow-fever certificate is mandatory just to enter the country, and antimalarials are strongly advised. If you are staying a full semester or more, you may need to register for a residence permit (a carte de séjour) once you arrive, the international office will walk you through it. Keep photocopies of everything and carry ID.

  • Long-stay student visa from a Cameroonian embassy before travel (~€100)
  • Bring: admission letter, proof of funds, return ticket, yellow-fever cert
  • Yellow-fever vaccination is required just to enter
  • Long stays: register for a carte de séjour after arrival

Cameroonian food is hearty and delicious: ndole (the national dish of bitterleaf and peanuts), poulet DG, eru, grilled fish and plantains, and puff-puff with beans from street vendors. Meals are social, markets are lively, and music is everywhere. Cameroon's mix of francophone, anglophone and dozens of local cultures makes for a rich, welcoming everyday life.

  • Try ndole, poulet DG and eru at local restaurants (maquis)
  • Snack on grilled fish, soya (brochettes) and beignets-haricots from street stalls
  • Shop Marche Mokolo for produce and the full sensory market experience

Bastos is the leafy, upmarket district of embassies, expats and better security; the Centre-ville holds government buildings and business; Ngoa-Ekelle is the university quarter; and lively, denser areas like Mvog-Mbi, Essos and Biyem-Assi are where much of everyday Yaounde lives and eats. Where you stay is a trade-off between budget, campus proximity and security.

  • Bastos for safety and calm, at a higher price
  • Ngoa-Ekelle and Melen for cheaper rooms near campus
  • Centre-ville for central access to offices, banks and transport

Cameroon is often called Africa in miniature, and Yaounde is a good base for it. Douala and the coast are three to four hours by road or train, the beaches and waterfalls of Kribi about four hours south, and the royal palace town of Foumban further west. Closer by, Mefou National Park offers rescued primates and rainforest walks.

  • Head to Kribi (about 4h) for Atlantic beaches and the Lobe waterfalls that meet the sea
  • Visit Mefou National Park for gorillas, chimps and forest trails near the city
  • Take the train or a coach to Douala (about 3-4h) for the coast and connections

Prepare for a cash-based, French-speaking city where patience and warmth open every door. Carry small notes for taxis and markets, set up Mobile Money early, and keep copies of your documents. Stay aware of your surroundings after dark, drink bottled or filtered water, and sort out malaria precautions before and during your stay.

  • Set up MTN or Orange Mobile Money, as it is how much of daily life is paid for
  • Carry small change for shared taxis and market haggling
  • Take malaria precautions and drink bottled or filtered water
