Sydney is Australia's showpiece: harbour, beaches and skyline all in one, with world-ranked universities and an outdoor lifestyle built around the water. It is the country's most expensive city, but few places make the price feel more worth it.

Partners & Perks

We’re still lining up verified partners in Sydney. In the meantime, ask the Sydney group for the housing leads students are using right now.

Few campuses come with a harbour, a bridge and a string of world-famous beaches attached. Sydney pairs top-tier universities with an outdoor life that runs on ocean swims, coastal walks and ferry commutes, plus a nightlife spread across Newtown, Surry Hills and the Inner West. It is the priciest city in the country, so plan your budget carefully, but the payoff is hard to beat.

  • University of Sydney (USyd), the country's oldest, a Group of Eight at Camperdown near Newtown
  • UNSW Sydney, a Group of Eight strong in engineering and business, at Kensington near Coogee
  • University of Technology Sydney (UTS), modern and central, beside Central Station

Newtown is the student heartland, with King Street's pubs, live venues and cheap eats running all night, while Surry Hills and the Inner West carry the small-bar and gig scene. Summer is all beach, from the Bondi-to-Coogee coastal walk to ocean pools and free barbecues in the parks. Every uni runs a big O-Week, and there is always a festival on the harbour.

  • King Street, Newtown for pubs, bands and late-night eats; the Enmore Theatre for gigs
  • Swim the Bondi Icebergs pool, then walk the coastal path to Coogee
  • Join clubs at USyd or UNSW O-Week; Manning and the Roundhouse are the campus bars

Sydney is Australia's most expensive city, so budget around A$2,200 to A$3,200 a month with rent, most of it going on housing. A room in a share house runs roughly A$250 to A$400 a week, cheaper in the Inner West and further out than near the beaches. The Opal weekly cap keeps transport predictable.

  • Share-house rooms A$250 to 400 a week; Marrickville and Ashfield beat Bondi and Coogee
  • Paddy's Markets in Haymarket and the Sydney Fish Market for cheap produce and seafood
  • Opal fares are capped weekly, and all-day Sunday travel is capped at a few dollars

The Inner West (Newtown, Enmore, Marrickville, Glebe) is the classic student belt for USyd and UTS, while Kensington, Kingsford and Randwick surround UNSW. Rooms move fast and cost a lot, so line up inspections quickly and never pay a bond before seeing a place. Share houses go through Flatmates.com.au and Facebook.

  • Flatmates.com.au and Sydney share-accommodation Facebook groups for rooms
  • Scape, Iglu and UniLodge run purpose-built towers near Central and the campuses
  • Ask the Sydney group on Studcasa; mid-year handovers are the cheapest way in

One Opal card, or a contactless bank card, covers trains, buses, ferries, light rail and the driverless Metro, tapping on and off each trip. Ferries are the joy of Sydney, and the Manly run past the Opera House is a commute people pay for as a tour. Fares are capped weekly, with cheap Sundays.

  • Tap on and off with an Opal card or contactless card; fares cap each week
  • The Manly ferry is the best-value harbour cruise in the city
  • Sunday travel is capped at a few dollars, so save your day trips for then

Semester 1 runs from late February to June and Semester 2 from late July to November, each about thirteen weeks plus a STUVAC study break and exams. Teaching is informal and first-name, with continuous assessment through the term rather than a single final. USyd's sandstone quadrangle and UNSW's Roundhouse are worth seeing whichever campus you land at.

For a full semester you will almost certainly need the Student visa (subclass 500); there is no studying a whole term on a tourist visa. It depends on nationality, but the requirements are broadly the same for everyone: a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) from your Aussie uni, Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for your whole stay, proof of funds, and a Genuine Student statement.

Budget for it. The application charge jumped to about AUD 2,000 (roughly €1,200) in 2025, OSHC runs about AUD 500-650 (€300-400) for a semester, and you must show around AUD 29,000+ in living funds for a year. Apply online through ImmiAccount as soon as your CoE lands, because processing can take weeks. The visa lets you work up to 48 hours a fortnight in term.

  • Student visa (subclass 500), the one you need for a semester
  • Application charge, about AUD 2,000 (~€1,200)
  • OSHC health cover, mandatory, ~€300-400 per semester
  • Apply via ImmiAccount once your CoE arrives; allow several weeks
  • Exact rules depend on your nationality, check your local Australian mission

Sydney eats extremely well and extremely diversely, from Cabramatta and Marrickville for Vietnamese to Haymarket's Chinatown for yum cha and the Northern Beaches for seafood. Coffee is superb, brunch is a weekend institution, and the harbour and beaches shape daily life more than any building does. Summer means outdoor cinema and festivals on the water.

  • Yum cha in Haymarket's Chinatown, or Vietnamese in Cabramatta and Marrickville
  • The Sydney Fish Market for a cheap seafood lunch by the water
  • Free ocean pools at Bondi, Bronte and Coogee, so bring goggles

The Inner West (Newtown, Enmore, Marrickville) is the student, music and cheap-eats core. Surry Hills is stylish and central, Glebe sits right by USyd, and the eastern beaches of Bondi, Coogee and Bronte trade higher rent for the surf. The Lower North Shore and Manly offer a calmer, ferry-linked life.

  • Newtown and Marrickville, the Inner West student belt, lively and relatively affordable
  • Glebe, leafy and walkable to the University of Sydney
  • Coogee and Randwick, beachside and handy for UNSW, if pricier

Beyond the city, New South Wales opens up fast by train and car. The Blue Mountains are a straight rail run to dramatic clifftop walks, the Royal National Park hugs the coast just south, and the Hunter Valley pours wine a couple of hours north. Jervis Bay's white sand rewards a longer weekend.

  • Blue Mountains, about two hours by train to Katoomba and the Three Sisters
  • Royal National Park, an hour south, for coastal walks and the Figure Eight Pools
  • Hunter Valley wineries (2 hours) or Jervis Bay's white beaches (3 hours) for a weekend

Register a bank card or Opal for tap-and-go and let the weekly cap work for you rather than buying paper tickets. Rent is the budget-killer here, so lock in housing early and share to cut costs. The sun is fierce, with the UV regularly hitting extreme, so sunscreen and a hat are daily kit, not just for the beach.

  • Use the weekly Opal cap and cheap Sundays to plan your travel
  • Start your housing search weeks before you arrive, as Sydney rent moves fast
  • Wear sunscreen daily and swim between the flags at patrolled beaches

🏠 Housing

What kind of place was it?

Coliving / Shared House

How much was the rent per month?

440

Where was it located?

Lidcombe, near the school

Would you recommend it?

I wanted something between downtown and school, but it was too difficult to find something that suited me, so I chose the best option for me (close to school). Due to some issues with one of my roommates, I moved closer to downtown, and it's much better. The best locations are close to the city!

🍻 Social Life

What are some top bars, clubs, or events you recommend?

Didn't really enjoyed it because I was too far from the city center

🎓 Uni life at SP Jain

Which classes do you recommend… or not?

Digital marketing is really interesting. I've learned a lot through human resources management. Strategic management allows you to think differently.

Do you have some tips?

The campus is nothing special. There are a few nice facilities, such as a gym, a music room, and a few PlayStations, but the campus is quite small. All the students are Indian and always stick together, which makes it difficult to fit in, especially since there is no student life on the campus. If I had to make my choice again, I would not choose this university.

✈️ Travel

Best trips to do?

I went to Bali, Melbourne, New Zealand and it was AMAZING

🌆 Sydney vibe

What do you absolutely need to know to live your best life in Sydney?

Sydney is very well served by trains, subways, and buses, but the city is very large, so distances are also long. You have to pay attention to the location of your apartment, because otherwise you can easily end up spending an hour or even an hour and a half just to get to the beach. Apartments are very expensive and quite difficult to find depending on the time of year. Be wary of scams and ALWAYS visit the apartments because very often the photos are not accurate, especially when dealing with real estate agencies. As for safety, I never felt in danger, even when I came home very late (3 a.m.) alone on the bus. The weather is quite pleasant and it is often very hot, but be careful, it can be very hot and then two hours later there can be hail and heavy showers. As for the food, to be honest, it's not incredible. It's a mix of many cultures, especially Asian and Indian. (For French people, a word of advice: eat lots of pasta with carbonara sauce before you come here, because they don't have bacon bits like we do in France).

💡 Other Tips

Good luck with the flight

Sydney has an alright night life. But around UNSW is not much to do. It is best to find a place between the uni and the city center

Coral reefs in a changing climate. Field trip to great barrier reef for $500! I was too slow to get a spot but any course with a good field trip. Dont do classes that are hard.

UNSW communication before i got to Australia was confusing for me and stressful but i managed to do all the admin sucessfully. Quiet campus as Unsw is a commuter uni
