Brisbane is Australia's sunniest capital: a laid-back, subtropical river city that has grown up fast, with three big universities, ferries instead of a tube, and the Gold Coast an hour down the line. Warm winters mean an outdoor life almost year-round.

Partners & Perks

Verified housing partners and student perks in Brisbane: no blind deposits, no ghost landlords. Grab one before someone in your group does.

We’re still lining up verified partners in Brisbane. In the meantime, ask the Brisbane group for the housing leads students are using right now.

Brisbane trades the intensity of Sydney and Melbourne for warmth, space and a river you actually use, since students commute to UQ by CityCat ferry. It is cheaper than the southern capitals, endlessly sunny, and wedged between the Gold and Sunshine Coasts, so weekends are all beach. The city is booming ahead of the 2032 Olympics, and the student scene runs hot in the Valley and West End.

  • University of Queensland (UQ), a Group of Eight on a river bend at St Lucia reached by ferry
  • Queensland University of Technology (QUT), with city-centre campuses at Gardens Point and Kelvin Grove
  • Griffith University, strong in music, film and environmental science, at Nathan and South Bank

Fortitude Valley, which everyone just calls the Valley, is the nightlife engine, packed with clubs, live-music venues and laneway bars, while West End is the bohemian, cheap-eats counterweight. UQ, QUT and Griffith all run big O-Weeks and market days, and the riverside at South Bank, with its city-built lagoon, is where everyone ends up on a hot day.

  • The Zoo and The Triffid in the Valley for live gigs; Sunday sessions are a Brisbane ritual
  • South Bank's Streets Beach, a free man-made lagoon in the middle of the city
  • Join your UQ or QUT clubs at O-Week; the Ship Inn and Red Room are the student pubs

Brisbane sits below Sydney and roughly level with Melbourne, so budget around A$1,800 to A$2,600 a month with rent. A room in a share house runs about A$200 to A$300 a week, cheaper in the outer suburbs than in New Farm. Free CityHopper ferries and inner-city loop buses trim your transport spend.

  • Share-house rooms A$200 to 300 a week; Annerley, Toowong and St Lucia beat New Farm on price
  • Davies Park Market in West End on Saturdays for cheap produce and street food
  • Get a concession go card and always tap off, or you're charged the full default fare

Students cluster near their campus, around St Lucia and Toowong for UQ or Kelvin Grove for QUT, or in West End and the inner north for the social life. Flatmates.com.au and Facebook groups are the main hunting grounds, alongside purpose-built halls. Watch for mould and check the air-conditioning, because subtropical summers are brutal without it.

  • Flatmates.com.au and Brisbane share-house Facebook groups for rooms
  • Scape and Iglu run purpose-built student towers near the city and Kelvin Grove
  • Ask the Brisbane group on Studcasa for room handovers at the semester change

TransLink ties buses, trains, ferries and the new Brisbane Metro busway onto one go card. The CityCat ferries glide up and down the river and are the nicest way to reach UQ, and the free CityHopper ferry and City Loop buses cover the centre. It is a spread-out city, so living near a busway or ferry terminal matters.

  • CityCat ferries run the river; UQ has its own terminal at St Lucia
  • The free CityHopper ferry zig-zags the inner river between North Quay and Sydney Street
  • Load a concession go card and tap on and off every trip

Semester 1 opens in late February and Semester 2 in late July, each around thirteen weeks plus exams. Expect first-name informality, heavy continuous assessment and online submission through Blackboard or Canvas. UQ's sandstone Great Court at St Lucia is worth the ferry ride even if you study elsewhere.

For a full semester you will almost certainly need the Student visa (subclass 500); there is no studying a whole term on a tourist visa. It depends on nationality, but the requirements are broadly the same for everyone: a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) from your Aussie uni, Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for your whole stay, proof of funds, and a Genuine Student statement.

Budget for it. The application charge jumped to about AUD 2,000 (roughly €1,200) in 2025, OSHC runs about AUD 500-650 (€300-400) for a semester, and you must show around AUD 29,000+ in living funds for a year. Apply online through ImmiAccount as soon as your CoE lands, because processing can take weeks. The visa lets you work up to 48 hours a fortnight in term.

  • Student visa (subclass 500), the one you need for a semester
  • Application charge, about AUD 2,000 (~€1,200)
  • OSHC health cover, mandatory, ~€300-400 per semester
  • Apply via ImmiAccount once your CoE arrives; allow several weeks
  • Exact rules depend on your nationality, check your local Australian mission

West End is the multicultural food heartland, with Greek, Vietnamese, Middle Eastern and vegan spots side by side, while the Valley has Brisbane's Chinatown. Coffee is a religion, the seafood is superb, and the subtropical climate means mangoes and passionfruit in summer. Life happens outdoors, from riverside runs to weekend markets.

  • Hunt out Moreton Bay bugs, a local lobster-like crustacean, at a seafood dinner
  • West End's Greek and Vietnamese restaurants for cheap, excellent meals
  • Jan Powers Farmers Market at the Powerhouse in New Farm on Saturdays

West End is bohemian and central; Fortitude Valley and neighbouring New Farm mix nightlife with converted wool stores; Paddington and Bardon are the leafy character-home suburbs. For UQ, St Lucia and Toowong keep you close, while South Brisbane and Kangaroo Point put the CBD across a footbridge.

  • West End, cheap eats, markets and a short bus into town
  • New Farm and Teneriffe, riverside, ferry-connected and buzzy
  • St Lucia and Toowong, the UQ student belt, walkable or a quick CityCat

Brisbane's location is its trump card, with two coasts within ninety minutes and a string of sand islands offshore. The Gold Coast is a straight train ride, the Sunshine Coast and Noosa a bit further, and Byron Bay is the classic weekend just over the New South Wales border. Split a hire car with flatmates for the islands.

  • Gold Coast, about an hour by train from Central to Surfers Paradise
  • Noosa and the Sunshine Coast, roughly 90 minutes north by car
  • North Stradbroke Island (Straddie) by ferry from Cleveland for beaches and whale-watching

Get a concession go card sorted in week one and always tap off. Summer storms roll in fast and hard, so keep a rain jacket handy from November, and never underestimate the humidity, because air-conditioning is not a luxury here. Sunscreen is non-negotiable, as Queensland has the world's highest skin-cancer rates.

  • Tap on and off your go card every trip to avoid the default maximum fare
  • Slip, slop, slap; the UV is extreme even on cloudy days
  • Pack for sudden afternoon storms between November and February

There’s also stradbroke island to do (day trip or weekend) it’s the best day trip from Brisbane, everything there is beautiful and you’ll even see wild kangaroos. Obviously there’s also Gold Goast (day trip or weekend) if you want to chill on the beach (less than 2h from Brisbane)

🌆 Brisbane vibe

What do you absolutely need to know to live your best life in Brisbane?

The weather is incredible in Brisbane as Queensland is the sunshine state ( you’re guaranteed to enjoy plenty of sunshine). The cost of public transport is only 50 cents for every ride no matter the distance which is really great. Brisbane is a great city to live in.

🏠 Housing

What kind of place was it?

Student Residence

How much was the rent per month?

1250€ per months

Where was it located?

South bank

Would you recommend it?

No I would definitely not recommend student accommodation weather SCAPE or STUDENT One. It doesn’t worth it, it’s wav too expensive for what it is. It’s better to look for a room on flatmate or apartment on real estates once you’re arrived in Australia.

🍻 Social Life

What are some top bars, clubs, or events you recommend?

Hey chica is the best club for me, piano bar party at felons is also cool. The MET is good when you arrive but then you can get bored. There is a lot of sport events, and people wake up early in the morning. So I would say that the social life is one the one we are used to have as European. Australia is more for travel, healthy lifestyle, but you can still party. It just doesn’t end really late as it can in Spain for instance.

🎓 Uni life at The university of Queensland

Which classes do you recommend… or not?

International business operations was really interested but it’s not the easiest. All my courses were mandatory for having a double degree so I don’t really recommend one.

Do you have some tips?

Campus is really cool, it’s huge, there’s plenty of space to study and to eat, with a lot of restaurants and cafes

✈️ Travel

Best trips to do?

Stradebroke island for a day trip, you can see koalas and kangourous in nature. But also turtles and dolphins if you are lucky.

🌆 Brisbane vibe

What do you absolutely need to know to live your best life in Brisbane?

Live in a good neighbourhood. West end is my favorite one, there’s a lot of bar and restaurants, you can do everything by walk. The CBD is cool too.

💡 Other Tips

Be careful there’s a lot of scam on market place and even flatmate. Never paid before seing the apartment.
