Alcalá de Henares counted about 203,208 residents in 2025, the third most populous city in the Madrid region, sitting some 30 kilometres northeast of the capital. Its historic centre and university buildings were the first in the world designed purely to house a university, a model later copied across Europe and the Americas, and the whole precinct became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998. The University of Alcalá, refounded here in 1977 after the original moved to Madrid in 1836, now enrols over 28,000 students and welcomes more than 6,000 international students a year, ranking second among Spanish public universities for attracting them.
