The Suzhou TL;DR

Suzhou pairs UNESCO-listed classical gardens and canal-laced old streets with a gleaming, lakeside new town full of international companies and campuses. It is calm, pretty and just half an hour from Shanghai.

Partners & Perks

Verified housing partners and student perks in Suzhou: no blind deposits, no ghost landlords. Grab one before someone in your group does.

Suzhou lets you live somewhere genuinely beautiful, with the gardens and canals that earned it the nickname Venice of the East, while staying plugged into Shanghai's opportunities. Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University makes it a real hub for international students, teaching in English, and the Industrial Park is clean, green and easy to settle into. It is smaller and quieter than the megacities, which suits some more than others.

  • Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU) teaches in English and hosts a large international community.
  • Shanghai is 30 minutes away by high-speed rail.

Student life gathers around Dushu Lake, ringed by universities, and the bars and restaurants of Jinji Lake. It is calmer than the megacities, so Shanghai is the go-to for a bigger night.

  • The bars and restaurants around Jinji Lake and Li Gong Di are the mainstream night out.
  • Dushu Lake, ringed by universities, is the student heartland of the Industrial Park.
  • Ask the Suzhou group on Studcasa which XJTLU societies welcome exchange students.

Suzhou is prosperous but clearly cheaper than neighbouring Shanghai. Budget roughly 4,500 to 7,000 yuan a month (about 580 to 900 euros).

  • Canteen meals run 15-25 yuan; sweet Suzhou-style noodles are around 20-35 yuan.
  • A shared room near Dushu Lake costs roughly 2,000-3,500 yuan a month.
  • Alipay and WeChat Pay cover everything, so set them up before you arrive.

XJTLU and Soochow University dorms are the simplest start, and the Industrial Park around Dushu Lake is the popular private option. Listings are mostly in Chinese.

  • XJTLU and Soochow University dorms are the simplest starting point.
  • For private rooms, the Industrial Park around Dushu Lake is popular; search Lianjia and Ziroom.

Suzhou's metro links the old town, the Industrial Park and the campuses, backed by trams in the west and shared bikes everywhere. The flat old town is perfect for cycling.

  • The Suzhou Metro links the old town, Industrial Park and Dushu Lake campuses; pay by QR in Alipay.
  • Trams run in the New District, and shared bikes are ideal for the flat old town.
  • Fares start at 2 yuan, with monthly transport rarely over 150 yuan.

Suzhou combines a historic Chinese university with a major English-taught joint venture, giving exchange students real choice. The Industrial Park keeps international students well supported.

  • Soochow University (Suzhou Daxue) is the historic local institution with a classical campus.
  • XJTLU, a Xi'an Jiaotong and Liverpool joint venture, is fully English-taught and internationally minded.

For a full semester you need an X1 student visa; anything under 180 days uses the X2. Your host university sends an admission letter plus a JW201 or JW202 form, and you take both to a Chinese embassy or visa centre back home. Requirements and fees swing a lot by nationality, so check your own local embassy rather than trusting a mate from another country.

The bit people forget: an X1 visa only gets you in the door. Within 30 days of landing you must convert it into a residence permit at the local Public Security Bureau (Entry-Exit office), which means a health check and passport photos. Miss the deadline and the fines are real.

  • X1 visa, stays over 180 days, needs JW202 + admission letter
  • Residence permit, apply within 30 days at the local PSB
  • Medical exam, required for the permit, budget €50–80
  • Rules vary by nationality, always check your own embassy

Suzhou cuisine is refined and slightly sweet, and the canal-side old town is made for slow wandering. Tea and gardens shape the everyday pace.

  • Suzhou food leans sweet: try squirrel-shaped mandarin fish and delicate soup noodles.
  • Sip local Biluochun green tea in a garden teahouse.
  • Wander Pingjiang Road and Shantang Street, canal-side lanes lined with snack stalls.

The old town of Gusu, the modern Industrial Park and the residential New District each offer a different feel. The metro connects them all.

  • Gusu, the old town, is where the gardens, canals and traditional life are.
  • The Suzhou Industrial Park (SIP), around Jinji and Dushu lakes, is the modern, international side.
  • The Suzhou New District (SND) to the west is more industrial and residential.

Suzhou is surrounded by the classic water towns and just minutes from Shanghai by fast train. Weekends are easy to plan.

  • The Tongli, Zhouzhuang and Luzhi water towns are all under an hour for a classic day out.
  • Shanghai is 30 minutes and Nanjing about an hour by high-speed rail.
  • Wuxi and Lake Tai (Taihu) offer more open water and hills nearby.

Suzhou is calm and lovely, but sort your apps and manage the garden crowds and the quiet-city pace. Treat Shanghai as your louder weekend.

  • Visit the famous gardens, like the Humble Administrator's Garden, at opening time to beat the tour groups.
  • Sort a VPN before you land for blocked apps.
  • The city is calm and low-rise, so plan Shanghai trips when you want a louder weekend.

🏠 Housing

What kind of place was it?

Student Residence

How much was the rent per month?

Around 250

Where was it located?

20 min from School, walking

Would you recommend it?

It was the best experience I've ever had in my life and I even went back one year later to meet my chinese friends and visit other cities. I would recommend you to take the opportunity to visit a lot of places and cities whenever you have time for it.

🍻 Social Life

What are some top bars, clubs, or events you recommend?

I don't go to parties nor drink, but I really liked taking part in school activities since it was the greatest opportunity to meet more chinese friends.

🎓 Uni life at Renmin University of Suzhou

Which classes do you recommend… or not?

I would recommend you to focus and all classes and espcially chinese class because It will help a lot to communicate with locals.

Do you have some tips?

The campus was wonderful, it was big enough and had an amazing chinese garden with a lake. It also has a canteen with chinese and a small market with necessities and snacks. The placement of the university is perfect, and there is big night market just 5 minutes away from it.

✈️ Travel

Best trips to do?

I had the opportunity to visit many cities but the best ones that are close are Hangzhou, Wuxi and Shanghai.

🌆 Suzhou vibe

What do you absolutely need to know to live your best life in Suzhou?

I didn't struggle to adapt to the new environment, the transportation was quite easy, you just need to download the bus card on Alipay or Wechat. You can use that card for the metro as well. It is different for bikes. I used to book Didis a lot ( Chinese Uber ) since it was not expensive at all. For the food, I used to eat around the campus or the student residence, where you would find countless of small shops of food and fruits. For the weather, If you go there in September, I would recommend you to take clothes for summer and winter as well, it is really hot and humid in the summer but really cold during the winter period. But I wouldn't recommend you to bring too much clothes if you're planning to buy things from China.

💡 Other Tips

It's a one in a lifetime experience so I would advise you to enjoy it as much as you can. A lot of people felt homesick from being far away from their parents, but I don't think you should focus on this. 4 months is really short so you should take your time to meet new people and discover new places.

Would you recommend it?

It was incredible ! We were in a university residence in apartments in a roommate with our friends. We each had a room with our own bathroom and toilet with a balcony. We were about six minutes from the university 15 minutes from shopping centres and 20 minutes from the old town.

🍻 Social Life

What are some top bars, clubs, or events you recommend?

We often went out to the « Victor » at the bottom of a shopping centre then there was also the « Jacks Bar » to have a drink and dance there was also a karaoke. And to go out to the club we preferred to go to the « Unda » otherwise directly go to Shanghai to « la fin ».

🎓 Uni life at Renmin University of China

Which classes do you recommend… or not?

My favourite course was Chinese with a lovely teacher where we could easily learn the basics and use them on a daily basis

Do you have some tips?

The campus is huge with a large park and a library. There is a beautiful canteen with a cafeteria. Chinese students at this university are learning French so they can help us find places to visit and we can exchange with them. Enrolment at this university was easy and supervised by the school.

✈️ Travel

Best trips to do?

You can go to the beautiful Doufang Mall or pants mall. There is a karting, a laser game, shopping, game rooms, cafes... there is also the unmissable old Suzhou which is superb and typical. You also have all the temples and the great Buddha to visit. And last place the Harmony Times square with its beautiful lights.

🌆 Suzhou vibe

What do you absolutely need to know to live your best life in Suzhou?

You must have two applications Alipay and WeChat. To get around the city there is the bus the subway and DiDi which are like Uber. The 10-minute journey courses take between 10 and two euros its really cheap. To eat there are supermarkets, restaurants and cheap foodtrucks and late at night. For a meal, count one to two euros. The cost of living is very low so no worries about your wallet. The city extremely clean and quiet and the Chinese are very respectful.

💡 Other Tips

The two applications are very important to be able to pay everywhere because the credit card does not exist everything is done on the application. The Chinese don't speak English to make themselves understood you have to Google translate. They also have a culture so a different behaviour from us so don't be surprised they come to spit or burp it's not rude there. If you want to use certain applications, you must install a VPN before leaving. I recommend you LetsVPN. The weather in China from September to December is very different in September it is very very humid and very hot while October November is a traditional weather it is a correct temperature. You can also order a lot of things from clothes, objects or other on Taobao directly at the residence.
