Buses and taxis fill the gaps, and the network keeps expanding, with 32 lines planned by 2035. Shared bikes handle the last mile on the city's flat, well-planned streets.

Shenzhen's three main universities sit in different corners of the city. Shenzhen University, founded in 1983, spans Houhai and Xili campuses and enrolled 820 international students among its 48,865 in 2025. SUSTech, in Nanshan, teaches in English through a highly international faculty and offers exchange, research and internship tracks to partner universities worldwide. CUHK-Shenzhen, out in Longgang, was approved in 2014, teaches primarily in English, and hosted 196 exchange students from 55 partner universities in a recent semester among its 12,000-plus students.

For a full semester you need an X1 student visa; anything under 180 days uses the X2. Your host university sends an admission letter plus a JW201 or JW202 form, and you take both to a Chinese embassy or visa centre back home. Requirements and fees swing a lot by nationality, so check your own local embassy rather than trusting a mate from another country.

The bit people forget: an X1 visa only gets you in the door. Within 30 days of landing you must convert it into a residence permit at the local Public Security Bureau (Entry-Exit office), which means a health check and passport photos. Miss the deadline and the fines are real.

Shenzhen is a migrant city with no single native cuisine: almost everyone here comes from somewhere else, and the food reflects it. Teochew (Chaoshan) restaurants are the most common, prized for fresh, delicate flavours, while Hunan cooking, spicy and fast, feeds much of the working population, and Hakka kitchens add a Cantonese-leaning third strand. Dongmen Old Street in Luohu is the classic budget destination, famous for beef hotpot and Cantonese and Hong Kong-style snacks. Huaqiangbei, nearby, doubles as the world's largest market for electronic components, worth a wander even if you buy nothing.

Nanshan is Shenzhen's university and tech quarter: Shenzhen University's Xili campus and SUSTech sit inside the University Town alongside Tsinghua and Peking University's Shenzhen graduate schools, and Shekou's Sea World is the area's relaxed expat hub. Futian is the central business district, home to Coco Park's nightlife and one of the two border checkpoints into Hong Kong. Luohu, the older downtown, holds the other checkpoint and the Dongmen shopping streets. OCT, around OCT-Loft, is the green, creative quarter, and CUHK-Shenzhen sits further out in Longgang.

Hong Kong is Shenzhen's easiest weekend trip: cross at the Futian or Luohu checkpoints for the MTR, or take the high-speed rail from Futian to West Kowloon in about sixteen minutes. Guangzhou is anywhere from thirty minutes to two hours away by high-speed rail, with second-class fares starting at 47 yuan and hundreds of daily departures. Closer to home, the Dapeng Peninsula holds Dapeng Fortress, a six-hundred-year-old Ming and Qing coastal defence, alongside Xichong and Dameisha beaches for an easy weekend by the sea.

Set up Alipay or WeChat Pay and a VPN before you fly, since almost every payment is by QR code and many foreign apps and search engines are blocked without one. Keep your passport on you if you might cross into Hong Kong, immigration alone can take thirty to forty minutes at Futian or Luohu even before the MTR ride. Shenzhen is glass towers and parks rather than old temples and hutongs, so come for the future-facing energy rather than historic charm.
