City Overview

The Hefei TL;DR

China is the exchange that actually changes you: megacity energy, food that ruins you for home, and a cost of living that makes student budgets feel rich. Nothing about daily life is boring here.

Hefei is a fast-growing science and tech city in eastern China, home to one of the country's elite universities and far fewer foreign students than the big coastal cities. That makes it cheap, unpretentious and a strong place to immerse yourself in Mandarin.

Partners & Perks

Verified housing partners and student perks in Hefei: no blind deposits, no ghost landlords. Grab one before someone in your group does.

Hefei will not top anyone's bucket list, but that is rather the point: prices are low, locals are welcoming, and with few other exchange students around you are pushed to use your Mandarin daily. The University of Science and Technology of China gives the city real academic weight, and high-speed rail makes escaping to Huangshan or Nanjing easy. Winters are damp and cold.

  • You will speak far more Chinese here than in Shanghai or Beijing, as fewer people default to English.
  • High-speed rail reaches Nanjing in under an hour and Shanghai in about two.

The scene is small and local, so joining university clubs is the quickest way to make friends and practise the language. Nightlife is modest and centres on the downtown pedestrian streets.

  • Student life centres on the campuses and the bars and malls around Huaihe Road pedestrian street.
  • Join university societies early, as they are the main way to meet people.
  • Ask the Hefei group on Studcasa to find the handful of other exchange students in town.

Hefei is one of the cheapest provincial capitals, so a modest budget stretches comfortably. Reckon on roughly 3,500 to 5,500 yuan a month (about 450 to 720 euros).

  • Canteen meals run 10-18 yuan and a filling bowl of noodles is around 15 yuan.
  • A shared flat room near the universities costs roughly 1,200-2,200 yuan a month.
  • Set up Alipay and WeChat Pay on arrival, as cash is rarely used even at market stalls.

University dorms are usually the best-value option in Hefei, and private rooms are cheap if you want more independence. Listings are almost entirely in Chinese.

  • University dorms are the norm and usually the best-value option in Hefei.
  • For private flats, Lianjia lists rooms around the Shushan and Baohe districts, mostly in Chinese.

Hefei's metro is young but already links the campuses to the centre, and shared bikes cover the rest. Transport is cheap and rarely crowded.

  • The Hefei Metro runs several lines linking the campuses to the centre; pay by QR in Alipay.
  • Shared Meituan and Qingju bikes cover the gaps for short trips.
  • Transport is cheap, with fares from 2 yuan and a monthly spend under 120 yuan is normal.

Hefei is a genuine research hub, anchored by one of China's most selective science universities. Programmes lean technical, but international offices are helpful and cohorts are small.

  • The University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) is one of China's most selective, strong in physics and computing.
  • Hefei University of Technology and Anhui University also take international students.

For a full semester you need an X1 student visa; anything under 180 days uses the X2. Your host university sends an admission letter plus a JW201 or JW202 form, and you take both to a Chinese embassy or visa centre back home. Requirements and fees swing a lot by nationality, so check your own local embassy rather than trusting a mate from another country.

The bit people forget: an X1 visa only gets you in the door. Within 30 days of landing you must convert it into a residence permit at the local Public Security Bureau (Entry-Exit office), which means a health check and passport photos. Miss the deadline and the fines are real.

  • X1 visa, stays over 180 days, needs JW202 + admission letter
  • Residence permit, apply within 30 days at the local PSB
  • Medical exam, required for the permit, budget €50–80
  • Rules vary by nationality, always check your own embassy

Anhui (Hui) cuisine is one of China's eight great traditions, big on wild ingredients and slow braises. Everyday life is quiet, local and refreshingly untouristy.

  • Try Anhui food: braised mandarin fish, Li Hongzhang hotchpotch and wild bamboo dishes.
  • Huaihe Road pedestrian street is the easiest spot to graze on local snacks.
  • Baozhai roast duck and fresh Chaohu lake fish are worth seeking out.

Hefei is compact, splitting between the tech-heavy Shushan district, the lakeside civic centre and the older downtown. Most students stay near the universities.

  • Shushan district holds USTC and much of the tech and student life.
  • Baohe, around Swan Lake (Tian'e Hu), is the modern civic and business centre.
  • Luyang is the older downtown around Huaihe Road.

Hefei's real draw for weekends is its access to southern Anhui's mountains and ancient villages, some of China's most scenic. Fast trains put bigger cities within reach too.

  • Huangshan (Yellow Mountain) and the Hongcun and Xidi ancient villages are the star trips, a couple of hours south.
  • Nanjing is under an hour away by fast train for a bigger-city weekend.
  • Chaohu Lake, one of China's largest, is right on the doorstep for a day out.

Hefei asks a bit more of your Mandarin and your tolerance for a low-key city, but rewards you with immersion and low costs. Prepare for the language gap and the weather.

  • Brush up your survival Mandarin, as English is much rarer here than on the coast.
  • Sort a VPN before arriving for any blocked apps you rely on.
  • Winters are cold and damp with no central heating in the south, so pack warm layers.
