Izmir is Turkey's third city, about 4.1 million people on the Aegean coast and the country's second port. Erasmus students describe it as the most Europeanised and open minded city in Turkey, with terrace drinks, relaxed dress and a holiday feel that locals compare to Nice or Marseille.

• Little English is spoken off campus, so expect a real immersion into Turkish rather than an expat bubble.

ESN Yasar assigns every Erasmus student a Turkish mentor before arrival, then runs paintball, brunches, hamam trips and a WhatsApp group buzzing with plans most weeks. In spring 2025 about thirty exchange students, including eight French, made Bornova's bars and 24 hour bakeries their second campus.

Izmir got noticeably pricier: rent per person jumped from about 200-300 euros in 2023-24 to 325-500 euros by 2026, plus roughly 250 euros a month for food, transport and fun, mostly covered by the Erasmus grant. Eating out stays cheap, meals well under 7 euros, but alcohol now sits close to French prices.

Taxis are metered and affordable, though most drivers still strongly prefer cash over card, so keep some on you at all times.

Yasar University is a private campus with a 24/7 library, free gym and small English taught classes of five to thirty students. Expect around 20 hours a week, continuous assessment worth most of the grade, and course clashes at arrival that make redoing your learning agreement on site the norm.

• In engineering you may be the only exchange student in class, real immersion but push professors for feedback in English.

What you need depends on your nationality and how long you stay, so treat this as a guide and confirm with the Turkish consulate for your country. Many nationalities can enter visa-free or with a simple e-visa as a tourist for up to 90 days, which can cover a short exchange. For a full semester or year of formal study, you'll usually need a student visa arranged before travel, then a residence permit obtained after arrival.

Registering for the residence permit (ikamet) once you're in the country is the step students most often leave too late.

Eating out twice a day is the Erasmus default here, it is simply cheaper than cooking, and Yemeksepeti delivery covers the rest. Tap water is not safe to drink in Izmir, so bottled water is standard even on campus. English is rare off campus, but Turkish hospitality more than fills the gap.

Bornova is the student heartland around Yasar and Ege University, packed with bars and cheap eats. Alsancak is livelier and pricier by the sea, Konak is the historic, touristy centre, Karsiyaka feels authentic and local about 30 minutes out, and Bayrakli is a quieter business district.

Izmir puts the Aegean coast within easy reach: Cesme is 1h30 by bus for about 5 euros, with Ephesus, Sirince and Pamukkale a few hours further. Istanbul is around 5 hours away, and ESN organises a Cappadocia trip plus a Pamukkale excursion most semesters, best booked early in term while it is still warm.

The residence permit is trap number one: apply through e-ikamet within your first weeks, since staying past 90 days without it risks a fine of about 40 euros a day, charged at the airport on your way out. The university runs an arrival session on it, and mentors help. Bring a SIM eject tool, you will need it more than once.
