It's a small, quiet base best suited to students who want nature and project work over big nightlife.

• Students arrive by boat in late August when the sea is still swimmable, then watch it freeze into a walkable surface by winter.
• Trossö's old town, Ronnebygatan and the Naval Museum are worth a proper afternoon, and the free ferry to Aspö island is an easy escape.
• Be honest with yourself: Karlskrona is small and fairly remote for weekend trips, so it suits explorers and sporty types more than nightlife hunters.

Karlskrona's social calendar runs on a handful of fixed nights: Villan, the student pub, fills up every Saturday until 2am, and Fox and Anchor hosts free karaoke on Thursdays plus an Oktoberfest in early October. Add hockey games at NKT Arena, a bookable sauna on Saltö island, and ESN's Sea Battle cruise and Lapland trip for the bigger international mixers.

Budget for daily life about 10 to 20 percent above French prices, though groceries at Lidl or Willys land close to home. A realistic all-in monthly budget, rent, food and some travel, is around 1200 euros. Competitive athletes can also apply to the Sport Student Academy for medical support and flexible scheduling.

The single biggest mistake is waiting to sort housing: apply to Jotac the day your acceptance letter arrives, not in June. Buy a physical Blekingetrafiken card since the app won't work with a French account. Pack for real wind and cold, temperatures swing from 5 to minus 20 degrees in January. And know that seeing a doctor here can take months, so bring any prescriptions and documents from home.
