The social engine is ESN: ESN Wrocław Tech and ESN UEW open each semester with Welcome Days and a Buddy Programme, then keep the calendar full with International Dinners, trips and Erasmus Games. Nights start in the Rynek's bars and the Pasaż Niepolda strip, and in summer everything migrates to Wyspa Słodowa, the island where the whole city drinks outdoors.

Wrocław sits mid-band for Poland: plan on 2,300 to 3,400 zloty a month all-in (roughly 550 to 800 euros), rent included, and a dorm bed cuts that hard. Beer runs 12 to 20 zloty, a cheap sit-down meal about 40, and transport is nearly a rounding error. Cook from Lidl and Biedronka and money stops being the story.

The real choice is dorm versus shared flat. UWr runs five dorms around Plac Grunwaldzki, including the Kredka and Ołówek towers, at roughly 450 to 900 zloty; PWr has nine of its own at 630 to 1,180. For a flat, hunt on Otodom and the local Facebook groups, insist on a video viewing before paying anything, and start early for September.

The centre is flat and compact, and Wrovelo share bikes make the first 20 minutes of every ride free, so short hops cost nothing.

Politechnika Wrocławska (PWr) is the technical heavyweight, with 13 faculties, a broad English-taught catalogue and a riverside campus at Plac Grunwaldzki. The University of Wrocław (UWr) is the historic generalist, with more than 580 Erasmus agreements, and UEW covers economics and business. PWr's language centre runs a free Polish course for arriving exchange students.

• PWr, UWr and UEW absorb most exchange students, and smaller academies add art, sport and life sciences to the mix.
• Check the English course catalogue before choosing; PWr teaches a large share in English, elsewhere it varies by faculty.

It depends on your nationality. EU, EEA, and Swiss students need no visa and just register their stay if it runs beyond three months. Non-EU students staying over 90 days generally need a national (type D) student visa from a Polish consulate before arrival, and then register for a temporary residence card if staying a full year.

Start early: consular processing can be slow and you'll need proof of enrolment, funds, accommodation, and health insurance. Once in Poland, you may need to register your address (meldunek) locally. Keep copies of everything, as Polish offices are paperwork-heavy and appointments can be scarce in the big cities.

Daily life tastes of pierogi from a bar mleczny, coffee under the Rynek arcades and produce from the century-old Hala Targowa market hall. The city's rituals reward slowing down: at dusk a lamplighter in a cloak and top hat hand-lights the hundred-odd gas lamps of Ostrów Tumski, and dwarf-spotting is a legitimate hobby here.

Plac Grunwaldzki is the student hub, PWr's campus and UWr's dorm towers included, which makes Śródmieście and Ołbin next door the practical picks. Nadodrze is the arty, cheaper alternative just north of the centre, Krzyki is calm and well connected further south, and Biskupin is green and quiet. Stare Miasto is gorgeous and priced accordingly.

Wrocław sits in Europe's middle and makes the most of it. FlixBus reaches Prague in under four hours from about 40 zloty and Berlin from about 80, Kraków is three hours by direct train, and the Karkonosze mountains are about two and a half away. Ryanair and Wizz Air add Dublin, Rome, Milan and Paris, so weekend plans stack up fast.

Poland is in the EU but not the eurozone, so think in zloty from day one, and do the boring paperwork early, it pays off all semester. Winter is real but so is summer: the same city that tests your coat in January hands you barge bars on Wyspa Słodowa by June. Arrive with both wardrobes and no illusions about euros.
