With students everywhere, the city socialises by default: evenings run along the Lungarni riverbanks, through Borgo Stretto's arcades and into the bars around Piazza delle Vettovaglie. Pisa is flat, compact and yours on foot: the centre crosses in under 20 minutes, so most students never buy a bus pass. If you are an EU or EEA citizen you need nothing beyond registering your residence if you stay past 90 days. Exactly what you need depends on your nationality, so check with your consulate early.

Once in Italy, non-EU students must apply for a permesso di soggiorno, the residence permit, within eight days of arrival, using a post office kit and a police questura appointment. Student Pisa eats cecina, the chickpea flatbread sold hot by the slice, drinks counter coffee at places like the century-old Salza, and does aperitivo under the Vettovaglie arcades. The tower and its crowds occupy one corner of town; daily life runs along the river and the market streets, where student prices still hold.

Cisanello runs cheaper by the hospital campus. No choice here leaves you far from anything.

The airport in your backyard is the trump card: a Ryanair base running around 58 routes in summer, Brussels to Copenhagen to Marrakech, five minutes from the station. By rail, Lucca's walls sit under half an hour away, Florence about an hour, and the Cinque Terre a regional ride up the coast. Marina di Pisa answers the first warm Friday.

• Fly from your own doorstep hub; with dozens of Ryanair routes, spontaneous cheap weekends actually happen.
• Train to Lucca in under 30 minutes and spend the day cycling the loop on top of its Renaissance walls.
• Reach Florence in about an hour by regional train, or ride up the coast to the Cinque Terre for the classic.

Request DSU housing and use the booking codes before paying anyone full price, then get the codice fiscale done at the international office's group sessions. Skip the bus pass debate, your legs and CicloPi cover this city. And visit the tower once, early, then leave it to the tourists; your Pisa lives along the river and under the arcades.
