Coventry hosts two contrasting universities: Coventry University, 29,500 students strong on a compact 33 acre campus in the city centre next to the cathedral, and the University of Warwick, with almost 28,000 students on a 720 acre campus 3.4 miles to the southwest. Between them, the two had around 60,000 students and a combined billion pound budget by the 2010s. Flattened by bombing in 1940, the city rebuilt around its ruined medieval cathedral and a striking new one consecrated in 1962, then became UK City of Culture in 2021, so history and reinvention sit side by side everywhere you look.
